That’s right, all ogres are destined to live lonely, miserable lives being chased by torch-wielding mobs who want to kill them. So the young Shrek set off, and eventually found a patch of swampland far away from the world that despised him. Many years pass, and the little ogre grows into a very big ogre, who has learned to love the solitude and privacy of his wonderfully stinky swamp (Big Bright Beautiful World.) Unfortunately, Shrek’s quiet little life is turned upside down when a pack of distraught Fairy Tale Creatures are dumped on his precious land. Pinocchio and his ragtag crew of pigs, witches and bears, lament their sorry fate, and explain that they’ve been banished from the Kingdom of Duloc by the evil Lord Farquaad for being freakishly different from everyone else (Story Of My Life.) Left with no choice, the grumpy ogre sets off left to right Jacob Ming-Trent to give that egotistical zealot a piece of his mind, and to Adam Riegler hopefully get his swamp back, exactly as it was.

Lehmann 1 Sarah Lehmann Dr. Aaron Adair THTR 4013 1 May 2017 A Supposed Happily Ever After: A Shrek and Into the Woods Analysis As new musicals are created, playwrights often refer back to existing productions to draw inspiration and plots- a common phrase in the theatrical world known as “history repeats itself.” In Sondheim's Into the Woods and Lindsay-Abaire’s Shrek The Musical, there are multiple similarities between the two shows. Though vastly different in execution, these productions are alike in plot content, humoristic style, and character development. Foremost, the most prominent correlation between the two shows is the plot. In both musicals, unlikely heroes go on a quest ordered by a hierarchy (for their benefit) and unknowingly break a spell. A singular example in Into the Woods is the Baker and the Baker’s wife going into the woods to find items in hopes of having a child. The Witch casts them out (to help her also gain her youth), and, in a triumph, they complete the task. Similarly, in Shrek the Musical, when Shrek and Donkey are sent to rescue a princess by Lord Farquaad, it is the higher power who ends up unsuccessful. Despite the contrast, the humor in each show is captivating. The writing “is extremely tight. [Meaning] that most scenes accomplish several functions simultaneously: moving the story Lehmann 2 forward, drawing us into the characters, making us laugh or sad or both simultaneously, setting up elements which will be revisited later on, and always entertaining us with highly original lines and scenes” (Freeman).

Young Critics Reviews Spring 2010-2011 Les Miserables By Victor Hugo, Alain Boubil, Claude-Michel Schonberg, Jean-Marc Natel and Herbert Kretzman At the Hippodrome Theatre through March 6 By Abby Salazar ANYTHING BUT MISERABLE How would you change your life if you were given the opportunity to start over? Would you take revenge on those who made your life miserable, or would you devote yourself to building a completely new character for yourself, forgetting everything about your past? Jean Valjean, prisoner 24601, asks himself these questions in the new stage musical at the Hippodrome Theatre based on Victor Hugo's novel, "Les Miserables." Set in France during the 1800s, it explores the world of second chances through the story of an ex-convict's new life as depicted through powerful sonic effects and exemplary visuals. “Starting over” is a familiar phrase. Many times we regret things we've done and wish we could start over, but how can we erase things that have already happened? How often do we actually start over? Valjean has made terrible mistakes, but when he is presented with the opportunity to start over, he acts decisively. He not only changes his appearance, name and location but also his values, morals and attitude. He keeps his past to himself and completely alters his outlook on life. The writers of the show emphasize his development by making connections to his past yet giving space for him to act differently according to his new persona. In the opening scene, a group of men are working hard on a slave ship.

SHREK THE MUSICAL a Wheelock Family Theatre Study Guide prepared by Patrick Brady and Jeri Hammond thanks and applause to The Yawkey Foundation sponsor of the student matinee series 200 The Riverway │ Boston, MA 02215-4176 box office: 617.879.2300 │ www.wheelockfamilytheatre.org Synopsis of Shrek the Musical ACT I The story begins when the ogre Shrek is kicked out of his parents’ home on his seventh birthday (“Big Bright Beautiful World”). His parents tell him that life will be difficult as an ogre, since “people hate the things they cannot understand.” Young Shrek has trouble fitting in, so he finds an isolated swamp to live in—alone, but content in his ways. He remains at his swamp for many happy years. One day, several fairy tale creatures arrive at Shrek’s swamp, disturbing his solitude. Per order of the cruel leader of Duloc, Lord Farquaad, all fairy tale creatures have been labeled “freaks” and banished from the kingdom. The creatures include the Three Little Pigs, Peter Pan, the Fairy Godmother, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the Mad Hatter, the Big Bad Wolf, and, their leader, Pinocchio. They sing “Story of My Life,” bemoaning their terrible circumstances and their lack of a “happy ending.” Shrek is displeased with the newcomers and tries to send them away, but they beg him to save them from Lord Farquaad’s evildoing. When Shrek finally agrees to seek out Farquaad about this injustice, the creatures happily send him off (“The Goodbye Song”). On his way through the forest, Shrek meets a donkey who is escaping from Lord Farquaad’s soldiers; Shrek easily scares the men away.

The organization produced its first show in 1967, and has performed every summer since in historic Woodminster Amphitheater in Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park. The three musicals scheduled for 2016 are Shrek The Musical, Chicago, and La Cage aux Folles. Over the last 50 years, Producers Associates has presented 157 productions, entertaining about a million Woodminster Summer Musicals ticket holders. The shows have been performed by more than 5000 actors, over 20% of them members of Actors Equity Association, making the organization one of the Bay Area's most reliable employers of professional actors. The musicals have always been performed with live professional orchestras, which have included 23 different conductors and over 1800 members of Musicians Local #6. In addition, the organization has employed 25 professional set designers, 17 lighting designers, 24 costume designers, 6 sound technicians, 18 choreographers, 6 directors, and over 1,500 young backstage interns. Producers Associates is the anchor tenant for Woodminster Amphitheater, an historic city- owned venue in Joaquin Miller Park.
