One of two films series organized by MMoCA, Spotlight Cinema reflects the museum’s commitment to contemporary art and film making. The films will screen in the MMoCA lecture hall on Wednesday nights from October 16 through November 20, and on December 4 and 11. Al-Kateab impressively documents five years of the most traumatic contemporary conflict in the Middle East by focusing on personal confessions to Sama, her new-born daughter. Raw, dramatic, and sometimes unbearable to watch, it is a poetic tribute to a micro-level, “singularly unmanly”, and painfully intimate portrayal of war and hope (Montgomery). A mixture of love and horror unfold through a kaleidoscopic personal narrative that broaches macro-political and religious subjects without centralising them in the cinematic experience. This article discusses how Al-Kateab’s documentary is a novel and risky experiment that intermingles the female war gaze with a subtle, image-based Islamic feminism. Capitalising on Svetlana Alexievich’s “female war gaze”, which represents the invisible stories of women in war, I show how Al-Kateab’s cinematography expands the scope of the female war experience through carefully selected visual refences to Islamic ethical praxis, as interiorised by the camerawoman. For Sama is simultaneously an intimate motherly confession and act of both “listening” and “remembrance” (as the praxis of the Sufi Samāʿ suggests). In short, it mediates an ethical truth about the human condition in ruins.     LISTE DES FILMS RECOMMANDÉS PAR LA FÉMIS 2021 Lors des rentrée 2017 puis 2020, il fut demandé aux Directeurs-Directrices des Départements et aux instances responsables de la Fémis de constituer une liste des 30 films considérés comme les plus indispensables : pour les élèves de leur secteur de spécialité (selon les DD) ou pour l’histoire du cinéma et des arts filmiques en général (selon les responsables administratifs et techniques). Il ne s’agit donc pas d’une liste des films favoris, mais des titres estimés parmi les plus nécessaires pour nourrir l’imaginaire formel des élèves, pour aider ceux-ci à approfondir leur connaissance de l’histoire d’une discipline, pour servir de repères communs dans le cadre d’un enseignement. Voici les résultats de la campagne 2020-2021. Ils ont vocation à évoluer chaque année en fonction des nouvelles rencontres de chacun-e avec le cinéma. Cette liste collective s’ajoute à celle des « 208 films » constituée par Alain Bergala, fondée sur le principe de la découverte de sa propre esthétique par un auteur.
