While the battles rage on daily, her baby girl Sama is born, and Waad is faced with an impossible decision: whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means “The best documentary to date abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. on the Syrian conflict.” – RogerEbert.com In Arabic with English subtitles OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 “(An) engrossing look into the Toxic Beauty beauty industry.” – NOW Magazine D: Phyllis Ellis | 2019 | Canada | 90 min For many of us, it’s part of a daily routine: every day, we powder, lather and douse our bodies with numerous personal care products. But how often do we stop to question the safety of the products we use? The multi-billion-dollar companies behind our makeup and shampoo insist there’s nothing to be concerned about, yet an historic class-action lawsuit against Johnson and Johnson argues the company knew about carcinogens in its baby powder and took no action. A hard- hitting exposé of the under-regulated cosmetics industry, this Hot Docs Festival hit asks us to consider the true cost of beauty. OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice D: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman | USA | 2019 | 95 min One of the most popular female recording artist of all time, Linda Ronstadt reigned over rock, pop, country and folk in the 1970s with 11 Platinum albums and 10 Grammys to her name. Though her incredible voice was lost prematurely, her legacy will withstand the test of time. Award-winning filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (The Celluloid Closet, The Life and Times of Harvey Milk) take us through the rock queen’s extraordinary life and career through deeply touching performance footage, and reminiscences from “A fitting tribute to a woman some of her closest collaborators, including Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, worthy of one.” – The Wrap Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, and Don Henley. OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 “An extraordinarily intimate account.” – Sydney Morning Herald Diego Maradona D: Asif Kapadia | USA | 2019 | 130 min Official Selection—Cannes Film Festival 2019 Argentina’s most infamous sporting son, Diego Maradona became a bonafide football superstar when he led Naples to their first-ever title win in 1987. But fame came with a price. Both on and off the pitch, the charismatic striker’s exploits made notorious tabloid headlines: from the contested “Hand of God” goal against England, to his indulgent hedonism and late-life struggles with addiction. Through brilliantly assembled archival footage, Oscar-winning virtuoso Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy) brings the infamous athlete into sharp focus in a riveting tale of rags and riches, saints and sinners, injury and victory, all played out against the backdrop of the Italian city that came to embody his divided spirit. 4 HOTDOCSCINEMA.CA The Endless Summer with live score by TOPS D: Bruce Brown | 1966 | USA | 92 min | 19+ Catch the last wave of summer with this special concert screening of the ‘60s surf classic The Endless Summer, reimagined with an original live score performed by Montreal indie-rock stars TOPS. • Cinematic Islamic Feminism and the Female War Gaze: Reflections on Waad Al-Kateab’S for Sama
Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 20, 2020, pp. 54–70 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.20.05 Cinematic Islamic Feminism and the Female War Gaze: Reflections on Waad Al-Kateab’s For Sama Dilyana Mincheva Abstract: One of 2019’s most acclaimed documentaries, Waad Al-Kateab’s For Sama is an extraordinary feminist representation of the Syrian civil war (2011−present). Al-Kateab impressively documents five years of the most traumatic contemporary conflict in the Middle East by focusing on personal confessions to Sama, her new-born daughter. Raw, dramatic, and sometimes unbearable to watch, it is a poetic tribute to a micro-level, “singularly unmanly”, and painfully intimate portrayal of war and hope (Montgomery). A mixture of love and horror unfold through a kaleidoscopic personal narrative that broaches macro-political and religious subjects without centralising them in the cinematic experience. This article discusses how Al-Kateab’s documentary is a novel and risky experiment that intermingles the female war gaze with a subtle, image-based Islamic feminism. Capitalising on Svetlana Alexievich’s “female war gaze”, which represents the invisible stories of women in war, I show how Al-Kateab’s cinematography expands the scope of the female war experience through carefully selected visual refences to Islamic ethical praxis, as interiorised by the camerawoman. For Sama is simultaneously an intimate motherly confession and act of both “listening” and “remembrance” (as the praxis of the Sufi Samāʿ suggests). In short, it mediates an ethical truth about the human condition in ruins. Introduction: The Horrors of the War and the Female War Gaze My argument about the significance of For Sama (Waad Al-Kateab, 2019) is developed in two parts.
