Course Description: 112/122 is an 8-week (120 hours) intensive introduction to the of for Romance Language Speakers. Students will learn major grammatical structures while building oral fluency, listening comprehension, accurate pronunciation, and reading and writing skills. This class will introduce a variety of Brazilian literary, cultural, and historical topics through poetry, song, folklore, film, children's literature, games, interviews and readings. Learning activities will take place in and out of the classroom, including excursions to places of literary, historical, and artistic importance—daily attendance is required. This course will prepare students for Port 130.

June 17/18: we travel to the colonial city of Paraty, located on the coast midway between the cities of and São Paulo, for one week in residence. Paraty was chosen for its historical significance, beauty and ecological importance. There you will begin to engage with Brazil's history, culture, language and people.

June 25: move to Rio de Janeiro. Class: IBEU-Ipanema @ R. Barão da Torre, 662, Ipanema

Grading 1. Class Participation 10 % 2. Assignments 15 % 3. Compositions (3) 15 % 4. Tests (7) 60 % Yale Summer Sessions policy—NO ABSENCES PERMITTED. 1. Class Participation: Students are expected to be punctual and prepared. Assessment includes quality and quantity of participation in individual responses and small group activities. Supplemental activities in New Haven and Brazil (films, concerts, lectures, etc.) are required. Excursions, speakers and tours are an essential part of the course. Portuguese-only language policy—required in class and all activities except in an emergency. Students are expected to provide a supportive environment for everyone to communicate in Portuguese.
