The vibrant spirit of the School comes through these pages. I hope Editorial that the love of learning and playing together, and the joy that comes from the deep sense of community at St Peter’s, speak loud and clear through the various sections of our flagship publication. Readers will sense the energy and enjoyment in the house reports and the remarkable range of pupil activity and achievement across the academic and co-curricular programme, as well as the tremendous commitment of our excellent teaching, pastoral and support staff. It is a compendium of a purposeful and dynamic year in the life of our community: another year of shared travel ‘over ancient ways’. It will be argued that poetry can have a unique role in supporting patients within a hospice setting. It emerges that there may be a further role of the poem as ‘memorial art’. The practical base to the research has been writing poetry based on conversations with, and the creative artwork of, hospice patients throughout a period of over three years. These working methods have enabled the author to produce a substantial collection of poetry, presented at the start of the thesis, as the prime evidence of the value of the approach. In this research context the ‘numinous’ is interpreted from its extended definition as relating to transcendence, wonder and otherness. Particular components of the writing practice have formed a ‘numinous poetics’. The numinous as a focus in this research has emerged through careful and scholarly reading and reflection as part of the author’s response to the perceived qualities and value of the poems as they were written.

    The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organisation which represents an international network of people from all over the world committed to bringing books and children together. NEWSLETTER No 32 February, 2017 President’s Letter Dear members and supporters of IBBY Australia The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was created in 1950, in the aftermath of World War II when millions of people had fled or lost their homes. (And Australia was quick to sign up as a state party to the Refugee Convention). IBBY was founded very soon after, in 1953. These were two of the organisations which arose at that time to work cooperatively, across national borders, to build a better world. Now we see many countries and leaders retreating from transnational policies. The president of the US has banned entry for people from a list of countries, in clear breach of the Geneva Convention. Australia has made savage cuts to its foreign aid budget. Millions of people, including many children, are refugees. It is easy to lose heart, and feel powerless in the face of such challenges. IBBY continues to advocate for the right of every child to be a reader, and to work to implement this through the IBBY Fund for Children in Crisis. In this newsletter are stories to inspire us, of a bilingual picture book club in Germany, and of a French project with wordless books, linked to IBBY Italia’s Silent Books: Final Destination Lampedusa.     MIXING GENRES AND GENDERS: CAROL ANN DUFFY’S POSTMODERN SATIRE: THE WORLD’S 1 WIFE Pilar Abad University of Valladolid INTRODUCTION The editors of the 1993 anthology entitled The New Poetry define the latter as a kind of poetry “… that is fresh in its attitudes, risk-taking in its address, and plural in its forms and voices…” (Hulse, Kennedy & Morley 1993:16). Most of this poetry is written by poets who, at the time, were officially appointed as New Gen Poets,2 and seven years later (2001) are considered solid assets,3 an appreciation which comes down to our day. Some of them were eight women- poets whose poetry has been summed up as “… moving, entertaining, technically innovative, often brilliant…”(Dunmore 1995) and among them is the one who will be the focus of attention in this exposé: Carol Ann Duffy (1955-). I have chosen Carol Ann Duffy as my subject as, undoubtedly, today’s most widely acclaimed mainstream British woman-poet: “… The figurehead of New Generation … Carol Ann has vindicated the faith people had in her then by becoming an indisputable popular poet alongside Heaney. The poet’s poet in 1994, she is quite clearly now the People’s (poet)…” (Forbes 2001:22).
