Recorded with his all-electric band The Gossamer Wings. Highly anticipated new record from internationally recognized singer-songwriter Pete Krebs. Interweaving musical technologies with sound art, science, linguistics, philosophy, and early music, Seastones is comprised of pieces that are dynamic, rich and deep. It embodies the technological history of electronic music by taking full advantage of tape music, synthesizers, and computer technology. This LP draws from released and unreleased Seastones tracks and contains gorgeous extended Garcia vocal passages processed by Lagin who was an intermittent member of the Grateful Dead until the band broke up in Back on vinyl for the first time in decades. Subsequently Linares would advance his career by recording two fabulous records under his own capable leadership as Alfredo Linares Y Su Sonora at the end of the decade for the MAG label. One can hear direct inspiration coming from Joe Cuba, Ricardo Ray, and Eddie Palmieri, especially on the first album, El Pito, and yet by the second record, there are plenty of original tunes as well. More importantly there is a 'swing' and assertiveness to the playing and arrangements that prove every bit as authentic, tough and danceable as their New York inspirations. According to Linares, the studio band was 'open-ended, some musicians came some days, others on other days -- Nilo Espinoza on saxophone, Betico Salas and Tito Chicoma on trumpets. Otto de Rojas played piano, and so did Charlie Palomares, who played vibraphone. Another good musician was guitarist Carlos Hayre. For the entirety of her nearly three-decade-long career, globally acclaimed singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb has been exploring a variety of styles of music, moving seamlessly between creating family-friendly albums, including her Grammy-winning Feel What U Feel, and adult-focused studio albums like Tails, Firecracker, and The Way It Really Is. It is her latest release, her fifteenth record to date, A Simple Trick To Happiness, that finds Loeb putting forth her most poignant and profoundly personal album in an exceptional body of work. The Record Store Day exclusive deluxe vinyl release of 'A Simple Trick To Happiness' features a deluxe tip-on jacket, poster insert, and gram vinyl pressing. Doesn't It Feel Good feat. On a cursory level, this is an enjoyable history of the invention and evolution of the record business. As an introduction to the major players and trends, it is adequate, and at times, insightful. However, as the book went on, it became clear that, conscious or not, Mr. Murphy seems to be advancing an anglophile agenda here. From reading this book, one would get the impression that every major musical trend and business advancement in the second half of the 20th Century was the result of white British innovation. The book represents itself to be a straight-forward history of the record business, but in the end I felt like I was reading a propaganda book. Certainly all of these stories deserve to be told, but the balance that the book strikes struck me as single-minded. Had Mr. Murphy openly presented the book as an argument for British musical ingenuity, I would have appreciated it more. But the continued surprise I felt with his choice of certain subjects over others was ultimately distracting. As a result, I found this book strange and unsatisfying. An author could fill a multi-volume set with a detailed history of the record industry. Short of that, author Gareth Murphy has done an admirable job of highlighting just the key moments, from the very development of recorded sound to today's issues with downloading and digital file sharing. It's a very reasonable length for readers looking for a quick overview, and it won't leave you feeling you've missed out on anything. One of the best books of its kind. An amazing and amazingly thorough book that covers all the way from the first competing Bell and Edison inventions, all the way up to the slow and painful demise of numerous dinosaur major distributors. It combines an extensive engagement with the music of the Grateful Dead, as well as other related musicians, along with a wide variety of readings from non- musical history, political science, philosophy and cultural studies in order to encourage a deep reflection on what the countercultures of the 1960s meant in their heyday, and what their descendants continue to mean today in both musical and non-musical realms. It aims to be both an introduction to those interested in the Grateful Dead, though largely born after the group’s disbandment in 1995, as well as to appeal to those with a broader interest in recent cultural history. Because the University of California – Santa Cruz is the home of the Grateful Dead Archive, students are encouraged to make use of it. However, given the number of students in the course and limitations of UCSC Special Collections its use will not be required. Readings All texts will be available through UCSC’s online system.

    1. Popular Avant-Garde: Renegotiating Tradition When studying the Grateful Dead—both the band and the wider cultural phenomenon—one should not be surprised if the image discovered is mixed or even contradictory: Was the Grateful Dead a rock band at all? If not, what was it? Jerry Garcia early on could claim that the band was not for “cranking out rock and roll” but “to get high.”1 Bob Weir stated that “we’re a jazz band. I won’t say we’re nothing but a jazz band, because our basic premise is rock ‘n’ roll. We just approach it from a jazz point of view.”2 Phil Lesh talked about the music that the band played as “electric chamber music,”3 empha- sizing that the “Grateful Dead is more than music, but it has always been fundamentally music . this ongoing experiment in collective creativity.”4 The three band members apparently agree that they did not form your aver- age rock band, but at the same time they formulate rather different visions of what the band is about. Even within the band, opinions differ on what must have been a central issue—but that issue could not be settled outside of the music, it could only be worked out, resolved in music. In that practice, positions could shift, often in just a few bars—Garcia searching for an Apollonian exactness and clarity, the definitive CD version or interpretation of a song, and Lesh pushing the music into the ecstatic unknown, promoting improvisation and madness, the Dionysian version of the Dead.

Over the next nine days, the band, their fans, and the Archive argued the matter on a nationwide stage, before a compromise on access was reached. The controversy touched on issues of copyright, ownership, and the effects of the internet on making fan projects more widespread and organized than ever before. This case study traces the history of the controversy and its implications through primary and secondary sources and an original interview.

  • Electronic Music
ELECTRONIC MUSIC Definitions Electronic music refers to music that emphasizes the use of electronic musical instruments or electronic music technology as a central aspect of the sound of the music. Basics Electronic music refers to music that emphasizes the use of electronic musical instruments or electronic music technology as a central aspect of the sound of the music. Historically electronic music was considered to be any music created with the use of electronic musical instruments or electronic processing, but in modern times, that distinction has been lost because almost all recorded music today, and the majority of live music performances, depends on extensive use of electronics. Today, the term electronic music serves to differentiate music that uses electronics as its focal point or inspiration, from music that uses electronics mainly in service of creating an intended production that may have some electronic elements in the sound but does not focus upon them. Contemporary electronic music expresses both art music forms including electronic art music, experimental music, musique concrète, and others; and popular music forms including multiple styles of dance music such as techno, house, trance, electro, breakbeat, drum and bass, industrial music, synth pop, etc. A distinction can be made between instruments that produce sound through electromechanical means as opposed to instruments that produce sound using electronic components. Examples of electromechanical instruments are the teleharmonium, Hammond B3, and the electric guitar, whereas examples of electronic instruments are a Theremin, synthesizer, and a computer. History Late 19th century to early 20th century Before electronic music, there was a growing desire for composers to use emerging technologies for musical purposes.

SUN RA SUNDAYS by Rodger Coleman This is a compilation of blog entries about SUN RA authored by RODGER G. COLEMAN from 2008 to 2015 and posted at nuvoid.blogspot.com. Coleman's blog contains hundreds of posts on a myriad of music subjects; we've culled only the Ra content. We have added no commentary, preferring to let this writing speak for itself. The vast Sun Ra knowledge base covered in Coleman's posts remains vital and historically valid. Identifiable historic inaccuracies (generally based on best-available sources at the time) are neither corrected nor footnoted. These are the posts and responses as they were published online at the time—the verbatim historic record. All copyrights belong to Coleman and the authors of the comments and quoted sources. This chronicle was collected, formatted & edited by Irwin Chusid, with assistance from Kristen Pierce, in November 2018. It is sequenced chronologically. Some unintentional misspelling has been corrected; idiosyncratic spelling, abbreviations, and casual disregard of capitalization niceties (mostly in the comments) were left as written. Most dead links are omitted. Reader comments are highlighted in red (although salutations- only comments have been omitted). Graphic images and photos from the blog are not included. • “Dick” Was Dick Latvala, the Official Tape Archivist
“Dick” was Dick Latvala, the official tape archivist for the Grateful Dead until 1999, whose inspiration and encyclopedic knowledge of the band’s vaults spawned the fabled Dick’s Picks series of live Dead concert recordings. Comprised of 36 volumes, Dick’s Picks follows the band on its long, strange trip through a multitude of eras, tours and venues, featuring handpicked shows that display the band at its visionary, Dick's Picks improvisational height. Now, Real Gone Music is finally bringing this unparalleled cache of Dead concert brilliance to record stores—many of these volumes have never been available at music retail, and the others have been unavailable for close to a decade! L GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 12—Providence Civic D Center 6/26/74 & Boston Garden 6/28/74 (3-CD Set) Combining the second sets of two different nights is not U standard operating procedure for the Dick’s Picks series of A live Dead shows, but this volume is the exception that proves the rule—the playing is so extraordinary, and the repertoire so unusual, that one can understand why Dick F E Latvala played more curator than archivist on Vol. 12. The first disc picks up the second set from Providence three songs in, featuring a short jam that leads into what many E have labeled the most extraordinary live version of “China Cat Sunflower” ever recorded, complete with a sublime transition D (“Mud Love Buddy Jam” a.k.a. “Mind Left Body Jam”) into “I Know You Rider.” The T revelatory moments continue throughout the Providence set, highlighted by a dazzling, 15-minute “Spanish Jam.” But the second set of the Boston show—which appears here complete, beginning on CD two after a superb encore performance of “Eyes of the World” from Providence—is the one that has passed into legend among Dead fans (that it begins A with a rare performance of Phil Lesh and Ned Lagin’s electronic music piece “Seastones” gives you an idea of what an adventurous night this was).
