OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE ELECTIONS DIVISION STEPHEN N. TROUT KATE BROWN DIRECTOR SECRETARY OF STATE 255 CAPITOL ST NE, SUITE 501 BARRY PACK SALEM, OREGON 97310 DEPUTY SECRETARY OF STATE (503) 986-1518 Dear Oregon Voters, As our nation and our state climb slowly out of an historic recession, the challenges we face remain great. This primary election provides the opportunity for all voters to decide on a variety of nonpartisan races and two statewide ballot measures. It also allows the two major parties to select their nominees for offices from the US Senate and Congress, to Governor and the state Legislature. You, the voters, are in the driver’s seat, making important choices about the future leaders of this state and country. As your Secretary of State, I write to urge you to register and VOTE. Now more than ever the voices of Oregonians must be heard. While we face the continuation of a grim economic climate, as families struggle to make ends meet, businesses work hard to remain competitive and our governments strive to meet increasing demands for public services, there is some good news to share. Oregon has made great strides to make it easy and convenient to register and vote. On March 1, 2010, we made it simpler, more efficient and more secure to register to vote through Oregon’s online voter registration system. You can register online if you have an Oregon driver’s license, state ID or driver’s permit.

I couldn't help but think about a recent faith healing case in Portland. A man was convicted and sent to jail for using faith healing with his sick daughter and not using modern medical techniques to help her. I got me thinking. Are we using the faith healing equivalent on our forests? Shouldn't we consider using modern forestry practice to help bring the forest back? Couldn't we replant a forest that would be more disease resistant, provide better habitat and be less fire prone? The catastrophic release of CO2 the first time was bad enough.

Oregon has made great strides to make it easy and convenient to register and vote. On March 1, 2010, we made it simpler, more efficient and more secure to register to vote through Oregon’s online voter registration system. You can register online if you have an Oregon driver’s license, state ID or driver’s permit.

  • 2Of 2 Voters' Pamphlet Candidates
2of 2 Voters’ Pamphlet Candidates Oregon General Election November 4, 2008 Bill Bradbury Oregon Secretary of State This Voters’ Pamphlet is provided for assistance in casting your vote by mail ballot. OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE ELECTIONS DIVISION BILL BRADBURY JOHN LINDBACK DIRECTOR SECRETARY OF STATE 255 CAPITOL ST NE, SUITE 501 JEAN STRAIGHT SALEM, OREGON 97310 DEPUTY SECRETARY OF STATE (503) 986-1518 My Fellow Oregonians: Once again, it’s time for Oregon voters to make good on the bargain we make for living in a free country. It’s time to vote. In these pages, you will see the candidates running for office this year. These are the words they’ve chosen to represent themselves to you. Read them carefully and evaluate what they have to say because the decisions made by our elected officials make a difference in our lives. Voting is only one of the duties we share in preserving our blessings of liberty. We serve on juries. We pay our taxes. We serve in the armed forces. We don’t litter. And we vote. Voting is no mere footnote to democracy. It’s what separates us from tyrants, a practice we’ve nurtured and encouraged for more than two centuries and preserve today as a bulwark in keeping our country safe and free. It’s already been an exciting year. In the spring, Oregon saw a huge surge in voter registration and we may well set new records in November for turnout. Registering, remember, is only half the process and doesn’t mean a lot unless you actually vote.

For this issue, we chose “Living History” as our main theme. By exploring and sharing the values and intellectual legacies of people from different cultures and backgrounds, we intend to expand your horizons and provide you, our readers, the opportunity to meet extraordinary men and women who have lived through extraordinary moments in history. Today, we are living in a highly globalized world. Indeed, the world is transforming into a place where no one can live only among people of their own ethnicity or nationality. Understanding the history of cultures is crucial. Without under- standing and respecting other cultures and histories, accepting the true meaning of multiculturalism is virtually impossible. This is the time to look back at our history and listen more carefully to those who have lived before us. The confusions of being globalized are com- mon, but there are many ways to prevent them from occurring. By observing and learning from what other people have experienced, we will be able to avoid the confusions and struggles, and fully under- stand the meaning of multiculturalism - to taste the true meaning of multiculturalism - in the process of accepting this new trend of globalization.
