Information and Song Suggestions Below is information on the Principal Roles of Les Miserables, as well as some audition song suggestions if you need them. Use this as a reference until auditions and feel free to email me with any questions! [email protected] Before you read, here is some information that I (Regan, but Mrs. Winkes as well) want you to know about your vocal audition: 1. Ask questions. Ask as many questions as you need (within reason) before the auditions start. If you have a question about the audition process, your audition song, call backs, a specific character, etc, we want to answer it! We want you to be fully prepared when you walk into the audition. This does not mean that you cannot ask questions during your audition, but we prefer that you come as prepared as possible. When you are prepared, you will give your best audition, and that’s what we want for you! We will always be willing to answer your questions. Don’t be shy! 2. Practice. Practice with a vocal instructor. Practice in front of a mirror. Practice in front of family members. This is not the audition to “wing it.” These auditions will be highly competitive, so prepare accordingly. 3. If you can, be familiar with the story and the characters, merely so you can convey the correct emotions in your audition. In call backs especially, we will be looking for specific things. 4. Every single aspect of vocal technique counts. We will be looking at your breathing, your pitch, your range, your tone, your vowel shapes, your control, your vibrato, your inflection, your emotional/character choices, etc. 5. Under the category “vocal range,” those are the musical direction notes that I was given from the script. I realize that “high B4” might be confusing- if you need me to play those notes for you on the piano, come find me and I will certainly do so! 6. Be Prepared to sing scales to give us an accurate estimate of your vocal range. Don’t let this throw you off during the audition- give it all you got! 7. Under the category “call back songs,” those may be subject to change. Depending on time constraints, we may not sing all of the call back songs. Depending on if we are still looking further, we may throw a new call back song at you. We will go over the call back songs at the auditions, but it will serve you best to be prepared. 8. Be aware that we are always watching- we might be looking to see how focused you are, how well you take direction, how quickly you pick up on rhythm, etc. Don’t let that intimidate you- be excited to shock and amaze us :) 9. Be confident and have fun. That’s what we love to see :) Principal Role Information: Jean Valjean: *Key Aspects: key protagonist of the show; has strength and maturity and compassion that carries the storyline.
