Dissecting Orpheus in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! At the opening—and again at the closing—of Moulin Rouge!, Henri Toulouse- Lautrec sings “Nature Boy.” Dressed as the Magic Sitar in the fictional theater production of Spectacular! Spectacular!, he chants “The greatest thing you'll ever learn / Is just to love and to love in return.” These verses frame and emphasize the overarching theme of passionate love through the medium of music. That some form of personification of Love and Music lies at the heart of the Orpheus myth will be no surprise to classically trained reader. But what might be surprising is that in the publicity surrounding Moulin Rouge!, Baz Luhrmann insisted that this film was his expression of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. Strong scholarly work on the classical allusions in Moulin Rouge! has already been begun, especially in detailing the counterpoints in allegory between both character and plot. My contribution to this subject, however, takes the analysis to a more abstract level. I argue that Luhrmann wanted not only to combine plot and character in order to create a new story, but that he used the idea of love emerging from music as an aesthetic theory in itself, emblematic for the very creative process of his original, cinematic production. This aesthetic philosophy and method creates a creative framework for the theme of rebirth in this ancient myth. I believe that Luhrmann was contemplating the Dionysiac ritual of sparagmos, central to the theory of drama and musical drama, as a working aesthetic for this film. This presentation will focus on musical composition of the film (rather than the static visual hybrids or the cinematic editing techniques), and in particular on duets sung between the Orpheus character Christian and the Eurydice character Satine. -

I trace parallel developments in the production and reception of silent crime and adventure film in Brazil's First Republic and in revolutionary and post-revolutionary Mexico, at a moment when industrialization and urbanization were reshaping daily experience without eliminating profound social inequalities. Re-evaluating critical frameworks premised on cinema’s relationship to the experience of modernity in the industrialized U.S. and Western Europe, I argue that these early twentieth-century cultures of popular sensationalism signal the degree to which public life in Mexico and Brazil has been conditioned by violence and social exclusion linked to legacies of neo-colonial power. -

A revelação de tensões do circuito musical a partir de um reality show musical1 Heitor da Luz SILVA2 UniFOA - Centro Universitário Fundação Oswaldo Aranha, Volta Redonda, RJ Resumo O artigo foca-se em uma análise do reality Popstars tendo como objetivo mais específico dissecar algumas das implicações de um programa como este procurar revelar, a partir da mediação do formato televisivo, a forma como a indústria fonográfica elabora os típicos “produtos de marketing” mais bem pré-concebidos pela sua racionalidade para o mercado. As seguintes questões traduzem a problemática com a qual se procurou trabalhar: a) Que valores são colocados em cena pelos diferentes atores sociais do circuito musical sobre essa forma de transformação de amadores em artistas profissionais mediada pelo formato televisivo de um reality como Popstars?; b) Quais as tensões que podem ser percebidas diante da revelação do processo racional promovido pela indústria da música diante da TV para os espectadores que desejam serem transformados em futuros consumidores de um produto musical em formação? Introdução O trabalho possui como objetivo geral contribuir para a discussão das relações entre TV e indústria musical no Brasil, pouco exploradas pelo campo acadêmico, a partir de um gênero televisivo recente na história do meio dedicado a promover de modo bastante particular a interação entre estes dois setores midiáticos: o reality show musical. Pensando a partir do “modelo de promessa”,3 proposto pelo pesquisador François Jost (2004) para compreender a comunicação televisual a partir da ideia de gênero,4 o reality show musical, como um gênero televisivo, é fruto de um conjunto de programas que agencia e negocia constantemente os seus sentidos entre os produtores e os espectadores. -

We group NLG evaluation methods into three categories: (1) human-centric evaluation metrics, (2) automatic metrics that require no training, and (3) machine-learned metrics. For each category, we discuss the progress that has been made and the challenges still being faced, with a focus on the evaluation of recently proposed NLG tasks and neural NLG models. We then present two examples for task-specific NLG evaluations for automatic text summarization and long text generation, and conclude the paper by proposing future research directions.1 1. Introduction Natural language generation (NLG), a sub-field of natural language processing (NLP), deals with building software systems that can produce coherent and readable text (Reiter & Dale, 2000a) NLG is commonly considered a general term which encompasses a wide range of tasks that take a form of input (e.g., a structured input like a dataset or a table, a natural language prompt or even an image) and output a sequence of text that is coherent and understandable by humans. Hence, the field of NLG can be applied to a broad range of NLP tasks, such as generating responses to user questions in a chatbot, translating a sentence or a document from one language into another, offering suggestions to help write a story, or generating summaries of time-intensive data analysis. -
