1 PLAYLIST AUG. 5TH 2012 Special Guests WINGS Denny Seiwell – Denny Laine – Laurence Juber 1 2 9AM The Beatles - Rain - Non-LP B-side (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Recorded on April 14 and 16, 1966. The track is notable for the backwards vocal from John Lennon at the end of the song. The section is John singing part of the first verse but the tape is superimposed backwards in the mix. The song contains slowed down instruments, guitar distortion, and vocals recorded and played back at variable speed. Aside from Paul McCartney’s dominant bass part, the song features a striking drum performance from Ringo, who has called “Rain” his favorite Beatles song. The B-side of “Paperback Writer.” Issued in America on May 23, 1966 and the UK on June 10, 1966, several months in advance of the “Revolver” album. On U.S. album: Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) 2 3 The Beatles - Paperback Writer - A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles’ twelfth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. Recorded on April 13 and 14, 1966. The track is notable for Paul McCartney’s furious bass line. The bass is so prominent in the mix that sound engineers at EMI worried it could cause the stylus of a record player tone arm (the needle thing on record players) to jump when fans played the 45 RPM single at home. Thankfully, no such calamity occurred. For this heavy bass sound Paul’s chose to replace his usual Hofner bass with a Rickenbacker 4001S bass.

32 The Role of The Beatles in Popularizing Indian Music and Culture in the West Rodrigo Guerrero Faculty Advisors: Dr. Charles Brewer, Dr. Sarah Eyerly, and Dr. Douglass Seaton College of Music Abstract: The Beatles were responsible for several long-lasting innovations that shaped the history of pop music and Western culture in general. As a British rock band that dominated the popular music scene during the 1960s, they made one of their most significant, yet sometimes overlooked, contributions through the incorporation of elements from Indian culture in their music and lyrics. This essay discusses the role that the Beatles played in introducing and popularizing certain features of Indian culture, and specifically Indian music, in the Western hemisphere. I first describe their relationship with Indian culture. In this section, I bring forth questions, such as why they became interested in this culture, why they decided to go on a spiritual retreat to India, and how the trip influenced their thoughts about foreign culture. After that, this essay analyzes the influence of Indian culture and Indian music on the Beatles’ lyrics and music, respectively. Finally, I will illuminate the lasting effect that this cross- fertilization had in subsequent years. he 1960s was a decade of experimentation in popular music. The Beatles, the British rock band that dominated the popular music scene Tduring this decade, was responsible for long-lasting innovations that would shape the history and style of pop music and Western culture. One of their most significant, yet overlooked, contributions to Western culture was the incorporation of Indian musical elements into their songs.

All YOU Need Is Love. This is the soundtrack album for the feature-length Cartoon film of the Same name based loosely around the lyrics of Yellow Submarine. The contract for the film and album, signed by Brian Epstein, stipulated that The Beatles were to supply at least three previously unreleased recordings for use in the soundtrack. The Beatles felt Brian Epstein had let them down and initially wanted nothing to do with the project but eventually decided to supply songs that would not normally have been seriously considered for release. However one Song, 'Baby You're A Rich Man', originally recorded for inclusion on this album, was issued six months previously as the B side to 'All You Need Is Love' (See the Magical Mystery Tour album). The four songs reluctantly supplied for use in the film: 'Only A Northern Song', 'All Together Now', 'Hey Bulldog' and 'It's All Too Much' were considered by The Beatles to be throwaway recordings. The original plan was to release the four new tracks as an EP, but after consideration it seemed that an album would sell better. Unfortunately for Beatles fans this turned out to be a one-sided Beatles album with George Martin's orchestral Score of the film's incidental music on the second side.

  • Music Music and Music Makers
Music Music and music makers The Buzz of the Sitar The sitar is an ancient stringed musical instrument that is part of the lute family. It’s commonly played in classical Indian music, but it’s also prominently featured in the music of Pakistan and Bangladesh. Dating back to the 16th century, it has become quite popular in the present day, even in the West. The instrument is best known for the natural reverberation (or buzz) created with sympathetic strings that resonate with the plucking of the melody strings. Props and Preparations • Print this copy of the complete activity for the facilitator. Check the Additional Activities section for more information to bring to the activity. • Be prepared to play the Beatles song “Norwegian Wood” on the television and have participants listen to the sounds of the sitar throughout. • Print pictures or display them on the television screen for participants to view during the activity. How does it go? 1. Play the video/song “Norwegian Wood” by the Beatles at the beginning of the activity and sing along to set the mood. 2. Read the history of the sitar and then ask the Discussion Starter questions that follow to spark a conversation. 3. Read about the anatomy of the sitar and continue discussion with the Trivia Q&A. 4. Check out the songs and videos in the Additional Activities section. The Buzz of the Sitar History and Origin The instrument known today as the sitar is believed to have evolved from the seventh-century Hindustani instrument called a veena. It was modified to become the more modern sitar beginning in the 16th century, when it was featured in concerts for royal audiences and in religious ceremonies during the Mughal period.
