FINE SERIES ENTRYBy SCOTT W SCHUMACKOne of the best things about this long running series is the way it wanders between realism, pure fantasy, and science fiction-tinged stories. The art remains beautiful and the book leaves you waiting for the next chapter. In their island fortress, Kriss and Shaigan still reign over their band of pirates and raiders. But Shaigan is beginning to have doubts, and when a prisoner who knew him calls him Thorgal, the child of the stars begs the gods of Asgard to give him back his name and his destiny. In return, the gods require that Thorgal travel to the kingdom of giants and steal from their ruler... and then Thorgal will be Thorgal again. He’s a child of the stars, beloved of the gods and touched by destiny, but also a reluctant hero, a simple man with simple dreams. Thorgal: an extraordinary Viking saga with strong elements of science fiction, by one of the master scriptwriters of Franco-Belgian comics. Already 13 volumes available from Cinebook! EDITORIAL: FROM THE LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN - NORDIC HISTORY AND CULTURAL MEMORY IN COMICS by Katja Kontturi, Martin Lund, Leena Romu, and Fredrik Strömberg SCANDINAVIAN JOURNAL OF COMIC ART (SJOCA) VOL. 2: 1 (FALL 2015) PREFACE: SJOCA REDUX At long last, the Scandinavian Journal of Comic Art returns from its extended hiatus. Because of the vagaries and vicissitudes of life and the world of academia, almost the entire editorial staff has changed. Fredrik Strömberg remains the journal’s anchor, while former editors Erin La Cour, Ralf Kauranen, and Rikke Platz Cortsen have all moved on to other projects. Rikke and Erin, for example, recently co-edited a comics studies anthology titled Comics and Power that highlights the current state of comics studies in the Nordic countries, and which we strongly encourage our readers to seek out.1 Following the original team’s departure, a new group has stepped in to fill the hole they left: Katja Kontturi, Martin Lund, and Leena Romu. We all hope that we are equal to the task of taking over from our predecessors. The editorial team would like to particularly extend our deep thanks and appreciation to Frederik Byrn Køhlert, who was an integral part of the team during a crucial time in the journal’s redevelopment, but who had to leave us to concentrate on other things. Some things have changed since the last issue. Some of what is new will be evident already in this issue, such as changes in how we handle notes and references and our switch from British to American English conventions, while other changes will emerge only over time.

DOI: 10.12797/MOaP.20.2014.25.02 Michał Borodo Uniwersytet Kazimierza Wielkiego, Bydgoszcz [email protected] The Sorceress Betrayed: Comics crossing cultures and changing accuracy standards 1. Comics crossing cultures Although there are exceptions to this rule, comic books generally have a low cultural status, which appears to be reflected in the relatively scarce research on this subject within translation studies. Despite the fact that the existing English language publications [notably by Kaindl, 1999, 2004; Grun, Dollerup, 2003; D’Arcangelo, Zanettin, 2004; Zanet- tin, 2008; Celotti, 2008; Rota, 2008] as well as several Polish articles [Chantry, 2002; Skibińska, 2005; Pindel, 2005] are noteworthy contri- butions towards a more complete understanding of the nature of translat- ing comics, there still remains much to be discovered within this area. Crossing international borders for more than a century, comic books exhibit numerous differences with regard to their cultural status and reputation. Originally created in the USA at the end of the 19th century, in the 1930s and 1940s they enjoyed their Golden Age in America, from which they were exported to various corners of the globe. The USA continues to be a significant ‘exporting’ culture today, though over time several rival comic book traditions emerged, including e.g. the Japanese tradition or the Franco‑Belgian tradition. In Japan, from which man- ga comic books have been similarly exported to other cultures, com- ics cherish an extraordinary status in society, with the Japanese comics 10 MIChAŁ BORODO industry being the largest in the world and with the number of comics amounting to around 40% of the material published in this country (in comparison with only 3% in the USA, for example) [Zanettin, 2008: 4].

  • Reshaping the Scandinavian Saga Through Hybridity
Reshaping the Scandinavian Saga through Hybridity. Thorgal, an Anti-Mythological Hero Maxime Thiry – IcoMS (Kalamazoo 2019) 1. A tale of two origins In order to understand how the series manages to blend different traditions, it seems relevant to first establish the circumstances of its creation, literally at the convergence of two cultures. In 1976, Polish artist Gzregorz Rosinski, wishing to leave Poland, work and offer a better life to his family, meets the Belgian writer Jean Van Hamme. Despite the material difficulties and the ongoing censorship on the other side of the Iron Curtain, their collaboration takes root in a project that avoids the sensible contemporary context and turns to a medieval matter. Satisfying both Van-Hamme’s love for the northern culture and Rosinski’s expertise in the representation of big natural open spaces, the idea of Thorgal is born with the ambition to explore the Viking era from an external point of view, which provides more freedom in the approach of the subject. Also, by doing so, the authors kind of reenact one of Belgium’s cultural cornerstones. Indeed, following the recent birth of its nation, bathed in an ideal of Romanticism, nineteenth century Belgium needed to find its own culture through a singular identity capable to meet both the Roman and the Germanic traditions. From a literary aspect, this resulted in productions aimed at promoting the idea of a “mythe nordique” (or “Norse myth”) which, even if it differs substantially from Norse mythology, has some of its roots in it, since Belgian’s Germanic legacy stems from it.
