Mrs. Willard has graciously given more than $1 million dollars to the school over the years, and in 2012 the school honored her Lgenerosity by naming the middle school the Lucy A. Willard Middle School Academic Complex. To show our appreciation to Miss Lucy for her continued support, we invited several of her closest friends from the school to say a few words. We hope you will take a moment to read these heartfelt thoughts on one of Tallulah Falls School’s greatest benefactors. Gewene Womack - TFS Board of Trustees Miss Lucy is a true gracious Southern lady - and my friend. I met her years ago when I went to Park Place to give her some pointers on reporting for the Federation. She gave me more pointers than I gave her. Miss Lucy loves to win. And she did win, the next go-round, at judging time. We became great friends and I love her still. She is a most generous lady who gives freely of her love, time, talents and gifts. She actually loves Tallulah Falls School as an entity but the students are her true frst love. Te love is mutual; they all love her back. Lucy has a great sense of humor which I learned from being her longtime chaufeur. I wondered why she liked to ride with me and it dawned on me that she enjoyed being pulled over by the state patrol Lucy Willard visits the TFS middle school. But few realize how far we’ve had to come in a Photography Spring/ Summer 2012 | Volume 6, Numbers 1 & 2 short time to open that collection up to the world. Gordon Jones, Brandy Mai, Charles Snyder, Brian Williams The Society’s 203-year-old collection traces its roots to 1809, when the Savannah Library Board of Curators Society began assembling an archive of manuscripts, books, and portraits. Forty years Chairman later, the SLS merged with GHS and its collection was added to ours.     ATLANTA the varsity The Varsity Iconic Atlanta hot dog and burger joint is part of the American fabric. BY JODY SHEE hen Frank Gordy opened Yellow Jacket Inn restaurant on a 70 x 120-foot lot at the corner of Lucky and Hemphill in Atlanta in 1928, all he had was $2,000, a pot of chili, some hot dogs, a few bottles of Coca Cola and a pretty big dream. With the meager Wprofits he made from that hot dog stand, he opened The Varsity later that year, selling American fast food from inside and outside the unit. Before he died in 1983, Gordy probably had no idea how far his family would take his dream. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, The Varsity ranks No. 3 among Atlanta’s top 25 restaurants based on annual sales ($12.61 million). With eight locations, the mothership sits across from Georgia Institute of Technology on five acres—an entire city block. When he purchased the land, Gordy dreamed of opening restaurants in other college towns, as well, so he chose a collegiate name for the chain-to-be. The original locale stands as a slice of Americana by which seasoned patrons chart the milestones of their lives over the past 87 years. Several customers have recounted to Gordy’s grandson and company president Gordon Muir that, in the early days, the restaurant was sometimes so crowded that Gordy would usher them with their food into his office and seat them at his desk. Now, with inside seating for 800 guests and a carport outside for about 40 cars, seating space isn’t quite the issue it once was at the expanded 18,000-square-foot restaurant.

    IMPACT FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE ANNUAL REPORT 2016 ATLANTA BETTER BUILDINGS CHALLENGE INTRODUCTION | 03 One of my proudest accomplishments as Mayor of Atlanta is the tremendous success achieved through the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge (ABBC). The Office of Resilience has partnered with businesses and nonprofit organizations to implement a comprehensive, voluntary program to increase energy and water efficiency in our building stock. The Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge invites participating building owners to commit to a 20 percent reduction in energy and water use by year 2020. With more than 114 million square feet of building space and more than 600 buildings pledged, Atlanta has earned its spot as a leader on the efficiency scoreboard. Since 2011, this successful public-private partnership between the City of Atlanta, Central Atlanta Progress, Livable Buckhead, Midtown Alliance and Southface has positioned Atlanta as a national leader in energy and water efficiency. We surpassed our water reduction goal five years ahead of schedule, and we’re quickly closing the gap on our energy goal, having already reduced our portfolio’s energy consumption by 17 percent. Through the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge, participants are saving money on bills now, while helping to ensure a more resilient future for all Atlantans. This program plays a pivotal role in furthering Atlanta as a top-tier city for sustainability. We hope to inspire other cities by our achievements and lead by example as we continue to make big strides in reducing our energy and water usage. Thanks to our participants in the Challenge.
