Hiro Club News For your cultural life in Hiroshima おにぎり Onigiri (Rice Balls) Onigiri are Japan’s most popular picnic food. They are eaten with the fingers. They are made by firmly moding rice into triangular, round, or cylindrical shapes in the palms of the hands. Sometimes a mold is used to press the rice into shape. In the Kanto area (east Japan) triangular rice balls were standard, while in Kansai (west Japan) they were usually cylindrical. Many kinds of onigiri are sold by boxed-lunch vendors and at convenience stores and onigiri specialty shops. They’re one of the popular lunches. (Abstracted from The Japanese-English Dictionary for Conversation about Japan, p. 107, Obunsha) The standard ingredients people used to put in onigiri were pickled plums (umeboshi), dried shaved bonito (okaka), and broiled salted salmon (sake). Then, they were wrapped with a dried piece of seaweed (nori). But now, various kinds of ingredients such as tuna with mayonnaise and broiled beef are put in onigiri. Rice goes well with almost all food because the rice itself has no special taste. Yakionigiri is also a popular onigiri. The surface of a rice ball is covered with soy sauce and toasted until it is golden brown. Hot, freshly toasted onigiri smell great and are a popular thing to eat after drinking. Having a picnic under cherry trees is a Japan’s typical picnic style in Japan. The best season to have a picnic is now! Why not go outside with some onigiri and enjoy spring in Japan? INTRODUCTION Major League Baseball (MLB) has experienced a dramatic increase in the influx of Japanese players following Hideo Nomo's (EXA ) defection to the MLB in 1995.1 One consequence of this phenomenon is that interest in Japanese baseball among non-Japanese researchers has increased significantly over the past decade. However, relatively little scholarship outside of Japan has been produced on the business of Japanese professional baseball. Cultural and language barriers, coupled with the highly confidential nature of data regarding the business operations of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) (B ) have created imposing challenges for Western scholars interested in this subject. The purpose of this article is to highlight the fundamental components of salary arbitration - in Japanese baseball, and provide an overview of all the salary arbitration cases in Japan to date. The research presented herein is based upon original source documents in Japanese, coupled with secondary sources in English.

He got his nickname because he was born in the year of the Tiger. As a young child he loved to paint. When Tiger was 13, he saw Louis Armstrong perform live in Osaka, Japan. “He was painting the air with his trumpet” recalls Okoshi. An enlightening experience, 6 months later Tiger picked up his first trumpet. Today, Okoshi often describes the relationship with his horn saying “When I’m playing, I want to paint the air with my colorful tone. Choices between long or short strokes, quickly or slowly, high in the canvas or low, brighter color or darker, with a fat brush or a pen. Paint the air one note at a time.” In 1972, after Tiger graduated from Kwansei Gakuin University with a bachelor of commerce degree, he got married and went to the United States for his honeymoon. Neither he nor his wife spoke English. “We took a Greyhound bus all the way across the country from Los Angeles to Boston, but when we arrived in Boston, somehow we knew that we couldn’t go back.” They decided to sell their return tickets and paid for Tiger’s tuition at Berklee College of Music.

  • The Impact of the Flat World on Player Transfers in Major League Baseball
ROSNERFINAL_FOUR 1/22/2010 5:12:21 PM THE IMPACT OF THE FLAT WORLD ON PLAYER TRANSFERS IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Scott R. Rosner* William T. Conroy** I. INTRODUCTION Globalization has indeed made the world “flat,” and the sports industry is no exception. Throughout the last two decades, American professional sports leagues have attempted with varying degrees of success to expand worldwide and create global product markets. The impact of this internationalization is apparent—from the success of the World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009 to the exploding popularity that has led the National Basketball Association (“NBA”) to announce the creation of NBA China, a Chinese subsidiary league pairing Disney with other local partners.1 Perhaps the most significant of these effects is that the current player pool for most of the top American professional sports leagues is no longer purely domestic. This sea change is well underway, with international players comprising significant portions of current professional sports rosters across the sporting spectrum.2 Partly as a result of domestic * Lecturer, Legal Studies and Business Ethics Department, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Professor Rosner is also the Associate Director of the Wharton Sports Business Initiative. • Local Travel Stories Baseball Fanaticism High in Japan
LAMORINDA WEEKLY | Local Travel Stories Baseball Fanaticism High in Japan Published August 15th, 2012 Local Travel Stories Baseball Fanaticism High in Japan Submitted by Tom Rizza A Nippon Professional Baseball, or more commonly referred to in America as the "Japan league," game is as much of a contest between the fans as it is between the players. When my friends and I purchased tickets for the Yomiuri Giants vs. Saitama Seibu Lions game in June at the Tokyo Dome, the attendant told us we were sitting in the bleachers and asked if we were "visitors." We thought she was asking if we were tourists, so we said yes, bought our tickets and got in line. Pushing through the turnstiles, we found out what our attendant meant by "visitors." Security checked our tickets to point us in the right direction, and the guard balked at our attire. A few of my friends were wearing Yomiuri Giants hats. I showed up in full San Francisco Giants regalia: the shirt, the hat, and a pair of Giants noise makers. But we were sitting in the visitors section where only Lions fans could sit. My friends and I were told take off our hats and stow them in our packs, along with our noise-makers and fans. Fans at the Yomiuri Giants vs. Saitama Seibu Lions They asked me to turn my shirt inside out. I asked the game Photo Michael Maly security guard "Do the fans get crazy?" and he smiled and told me "Hai (yes), crazy." The bleachers were split, three-quarters for the home team and one-quarter for the visitors.
