Manny Machado took 10 years and $300 million from the San Diego Padres. Bryce Harper was next with a record-setting 13-year, $330 million contract to play for the Philadelphia Phillies. Then on Tuesday came the news that Mike Trout was closing in on an extension with the Los Angeles Angels that would pay him $360 million over 10 years after his current deal expires in two seasons. For the 26-year-old Betts, those are his peers. Harper and Machado are 26, and Trout is 27. From a statistical perspective, Betts stands with Trout. Or at least as close as anyone can stand with Trout. As calculated by Baseball-Reference.com, Betts has 32.9 WAR over his four full seasons in the majors. Only Trout (36.6) has more over that same period. Machado (23.2) is seventh, and Harper a surprising 23rd with 17.5. The difference is that Trout has been outlandishly valuable for seven full seasons. Betts essentially shrugged when asked his opinion of the Harper and Machado deals. “We’re all different players,” he said after Harper signed. “We all have different things that are important. Good for those guys.” Betts had good reason not to overreact.

    A’s News Clips, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Power-hungry Oakland A's ready to wine, dine former Houston Astros slugger Lance Berkman By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune A's officials were scheduled to have dinner Tuesday night in Houston with free agent Lance Berkman, two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Bay Area News Group. Berkman, a switch-hitter who's slugged 327 homers over 12 seasons, is known to have been on the team's radar. Presumably, the A's view him as their designated hitter if they sign him. Berkman hit just .248 with 14 homers and 58 RBIs last season, which he began with the Houston Astros before being traded to the New York Yankees. But Berkman, who turns 35 in February, told Fox Sports last week that he's fully recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery that bothered him much of last season. He hit 25 homers as recently as 2009 for Houston. Adding power is the A's most pressing need. They would have a hole at DH if they decide not to tender a contract to Jack Cust, which is a strong possibility. The A's must decide by 9 p.m. Thursday (PT) whether to tender contracts to their 10 arbitration-eligible players, including Cust. Other logical non-tender candidates: outfielder Travis Buck, reliever Brad Ziegler and either of two third basemen -- Kevin Kouzmanoff or Edwin Encarnacion. It's believed the A's would consider signing Berkman to a one- or two-year deal, though the team doesn't comment on free- agent negotiations.

    For Immediate Release: May 7, 2021 Contact Information: Tonya Atta Director of Operations & Communications Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission 316.265.6236 2021 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award presented by the Kamerion Wimbley Foundation Watch List Updated WICHITA, KANSAS – The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission has added eight catchers to the official watch list of the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award presented by the Kamerion Wimbley Foundation: Eric Bigani, JR UNLV Andrew Cossetti, JR Saint Joseph’s Angelo D’Acunto, JR Holy Cross Hunter Goodman, SO Memphis Jerry Huntzinger, SR Seton Hall Coltyn Kessler, SR Kentucky Logan Tanner, FR Mississippi State Nick Thornquist, SR UTSA This year, eighty-eight catchers have been nominated for the award by their schools. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 20, 2021. Ballots will be sent to the national voting committee at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 7, 2021. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 23rd Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on July 1, 2021. Because the Buster Posey Award strives to honor the top collegiate catcher in a season, a 2020 recipient was not named due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of the collegiate baseball season.     DICK HOWSER TROPHY COMMITTEE Contact: Bo Carter ([email protected]) June 16, 2018 FLORIDA’S SINGER CHOSEN AS 2018 DICK HOWSER TROPHY RECIPIENT OMAHA, Neb. – Pitcher Brady Singer, regarded as one of the top pitchers in the storied history of Florida Gators baseball, is the 32nd recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, as college baseball's Player of the Year. Singer joins UF’s and Seattle Mariners catcher Mike Zunino (2012) as the first two Gators standout to capture the Howser Trophy. The Howser Trophy committee and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced the award Saturday at a national news conference at TD Ameritrade Park prior to the opening game of the 72nd annual NCAA Division I Baseball College World Series. Singer is the seventh student-athlete from the Southeastern Conference to win the trophy and third in five years after the awards went to A.J. Reed of Kentucky and the Houston Astros in 2014 and Andrew Benintendi of Arkansas and the Boston Red Sox in 2015. Singer, a 6-5, 220-pound right-handed pitcher from Eustis, Florida, was the 2018 SEC Pitcher of the Year. He also garnered 2018 consensus first team All-American honors and was the No. 18 player chosen in the recent Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals, the organization Dick Howser managed to the 1985 World Series crown. His most recent pitching outing was against fellow 2018 Dick Howser Trophy finalist pitcher Casey Mize of Auburn on June 9. Singer outdueled the AU mound star with 6 2/3 innings pitched, nine strikeouts, two walks, two runs (both earned), and a key 8-2 win by the Gators to open the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional.

    A’s News Clips, Thursday, November 4, 2010 Oakland A's buy out contract of Eric Chavez, pick up options of Coco Crisp, Mark Ellis By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune, 11/4/2010 The A's cut ties with third baseman Eric Chavez on Wednesday, declining his $12.5 million option for 2011 and paying him a $3 million buyout. Although most saw the move coming, it provides a historic conclusion to the six-time Gold Glover's career in an Oakland uniform. The A's also announced that they exercised their $6 million option on second baseman Mark Ellis and $5.75 million option on center fielder Coco Crisp, ensuring both will return next season. Chavez -- whose six-year, $66 million contract expired at season's end -- now becomes a free agent. And though he's not sure what interest he'll generate, he said he's not ready to retire despite multiple injuries that have ravaged his career since 2006. One possible scenario was for the A's to extend Chavez, 32, a non-roster invitation to spring training if he appeared healthy. But Chavez said he needs a fresh start and believes the A's are ready to move on as well. "I'm going to see what's out there," Chavez said from his home in Arizona. "I've done everything, seen every doctor. The only thing I haven't done is change the scenery. And I don't even know what that (entails). But I'm going to hang my hat on that and see if that makes any difference." A first-round pick in 1996, Chavez became a cornerstone as the A's made five postseason appearances over a seven-year span beginning in 2000.
