Marya, Yara and Reem were and still a source of joy in my life. iv Abstract Arab women’s literature continue to receive considerable critical attention by scholars in East and West. However, through my focus on three novels in this dissertation, The Cinnamon’s Aroma (2008) by Samar Yazbek, Brooklyn Heights (2011) by Miral al-Tahawy and It’s Called Passion (2009) by Alawiya Sobh I hope to contribute a more holistic understanding of these works by highlighting features not fully explored in previous scholarship. I concentrate on the creative means of struggle and resistance to the entrenched structures of oppression locating sights of potential hope and emancipation. I point out the ways in which these texts subvert and present a new articulation of ossified social and cultural truth value notions on gender and sexuality. This subversion and resignification is done through exploring the relationship between concrete transgressive acts and narrative construction. Subversive and alternative acts pertaining to sexuality and gender are ephemeral and transient if not transmuted into a structured, narrative form. In The Cinnamon’s Aroma I analyze how the sexual relationship between two female characters is presented as an act of subversion and resistance to patriarchal oppression. Brooklyn Heights addresses the need to re- conceptualize female gender identity. It’s Called Passion discusses sexuality and war in rural and urban settings stressing the significance of fiction and narrative construction in any subversive and emancipatory project. I also discuss the focus on the body as contested site upon which sexuality, violence and oppression are discussed. The dissertation also explores the temporal and spatial mobility of traditional patriarchal v structures and gendered oppression. I explore the unifying elements binding these novels in addition to their diversity. Arab female writers took advantage of this new and rising literary form to present counter-narratives that emanate from an attempt to level the ground of inequality experienced by women in modern Arab societies. These voices have progressed and developed over time, accompanying cultural, social, political and economic shifts in the Arab world and elsewhere, especially the West. Here, women speak as loudly as men, shaping collective and individual experiences. The issue of gender and sexuality is one constant throughout these developmental stages and shifts. Sexuality, understood as a physical experience as well as a larger cultural concept and narrative has remained a predominant topic along with the accompanying gender identity issues. Gender and sexuality have mainly been discussed within the framework of gendered oppression, gendered suppression and gendered violence. This order of objectification and marginalization is regarded an essential feature of a widespread patriarchal structure deeply entrenched in the cultural, social, political and economic apparatuses of the public and the private domains. 1 In this introduction, I first introduce the three works treated in this dissertation and their authors and some shared themes that link them and the criteria behind their selection. Then I provide an analysis for the theoretical framework I am employing discussing mainly the theory of narrative construction, gender and sexuality in a structuralist, post-modern sense. This is followed by a brief overview of the history of the modern Arabic novel in general, and the feminist novel in particular. Then I move on to explore the secondary literature most relevant to my topic. In the following section I define the key terms I am using employed in this dissertation, mainly gender, sexuality, subversion and resignification. Finally, I provide a brief chapter’s summary. Storytelling, writing, fiction and the imaginative realm were and are still employed by Arab women writers to challenge and defy the order of oppression and hegemony. Imagination and fiction as used in this dissertation do not allude to fantasy or to the unreal; to the contrary, they represent the possible. Imagination and fiction are the space where these women writers envision ways of resistance, hope and emancipation. Oral and written narratives constitute the realm of representation which retrospectively constitute what we call the real world in a Lacanian, Freudian and Derridian sense. Imagination is the space of argumentation, the space of defying predominant orders of patriarchal hegemony and the space of envisioning avenues of hope and emancipation. The realm of representation created through oral and written accounts and stories is the link between the existent or real, and what could become, the imaginative and fictional. Both worlds, real and imaginative are constituted through narrative representation with the only difference that one is lived, exist and the other’s existence is envisioned, aspired for through

    Women in the Arab World: Beyond Stereotypes Dr. Rana Zaher Course Number: 702.2374 Class Time: TBA Class Location: TBA E-Mail: [email protected] “There is another possibility for realizing our pursuit rather than defeat, since we are determined not to die before we try to live” (Ashour, R., 2013, p. 393).* Course Objective: This course brings the case of women in the Arab world to the forefront of the academic discussion, yet from a non-Orientalist angle that defies the overgeneralizations and dichotomizations that usually characterize discussions about Arab women. Arab women may share many issues and challenges in common, ethnographically speaking, but they may also differ in their choice of struggle and resistance to oppression in accordance with the difference in their political, social, and cultural context. The course will expose the students to the different realities of Arab women in different contexts, embarking on different fronts, and will re-define certain classical concepts such as feminism and struggle to better reflect the dynamics of these women’s solution-seeking patterns. The main topics that will be discussed in class include Orientalism, different forms of Feminisms: Islamic feminism vs. Arab secular feminism, resistance and empowerment from within, Arab Spring’s effect on women, Arab women’s political representation, and patterns of change among Arab women. The course is based on multiple learning resources: academic material, films, and guest speakers when possible. Course Requirements: Attendance is obligatory for at least 80% of the classes, and active participation in classes is expected. The hotel is located in a lovely residential area near the National Zoo, but a nearby stop on the metro red line makes all parts of DC easily accessible. The program of 230+ sessions (see pages 12-51) spread over four days will offer a smorgasbord to whet the appetite of any Middle East studies aficionado. MESA’s affiliate groups meet mostly on Saturday, November 18 (see pages 10-11) and the first program session begins that day at 5:30pm. Panels run all day Sunday and Monday and end at 3pm on Tuesday. The book bazaar will be open Sunday and Monday from 9am to 6pm and on Tuesday from 8am to 12pm (see pages 8-9). MESAʼs ever-popular FilmFest (see the teaser on pages 6-7) begins screenings on Saturday morning and runs through Tuesday until around 2pm. The MESA Presidential Address & Awards will be held Sunday evening from 6pm to 7:30pm, and the MESA Members Meeting on Monday evening from 6pm to 8:00pm. As you will see, it’s business as usual, except of course for a new administration that is determined to ban nationals of six Muslim majority countries from traveling to the US, and MESA having joined a lawsuit against the ban that is making its way to the US Supreme Court in October.

Using the erotic as a parameter, this paper analyzes three novels by three contemporary women novelists from Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria: Nawāl el-Sa’dāwī, Ḥanān al-Shaykh, and Samar Yazbek, respectively. An analysis of the combination of language, culture, and space can lend itself to an examination of the relationships of power and social hierarchies that govern societies, in a fashion that follows the Foucauldian power/knowledge social theory. Acee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor This thesis focuses on sha’bi music, a style of popular music in the Arab world. More specifically, it discusses the role of women in sha’bi music, focusing on singers Nancy Ajram and Haifa Wehbe as examples of female pop singers. I take a feminist approach to understanding the lives, images, and legacies of two of the most influential female singers of the twentieth century, Umm Kulthum and Fairouz, and then I explore how these legacies have impacted the careers and societal expectations of Ajram and Wehbe. Several issues are explicated in the thesis, including the historic progression of popular music, the impacts of globalization and westernization, and the status of women as performers in the Arab world. The fan bases of the various female sha’bi singers are explored to examine why people are drawn to popular music, how youth cultures utilize music to define their generations, and why some people in the Arab world have problems with this music and/or with the singers: their lyrics, clothing, dancing bodies, and music videos. My ethnography on these issues among Arabs in Bowling Green, Ohio, reveals how members of the diaspora address the tensions of this music and the images of female performers.

It shows a dismembered collection of body parts, the head missing and the right arm dangling precariously. Then you notice a few drops of blood slowly dripping from the frame, disappearing as they are absorbed by the dusty soil below. This is the catastrophe Syrians deal with every day.”1 If Yazbek’s vision of Syrian dismemberment echoes other gory depic- tions of wartime brutality that are familiar across geographic contexts, the image of blood absorbed by dry land evokes a particular ecology of violence—a backdrop of drought signifying the deadly force of global warming—which has become common to international representations of the Syrian war. In the construction of Syria as one of the world’s first “climate wars,” animality and debility are conjoined in representations of how climate change produces the mass death of farmed animals and the precarious movements and physical conditions of fleeing refugees.
