It is surprising that so few books on the subject have been produced and that the greater part of nearly all texts on fish kc ping is concerned with species and varieties, their recognition and pecu­ liarities, rather than with fish keeping as a whole. In the present \'OIUllle, attention is focused on the aquarium as ,1 going concern, on the factors which enter into the maintenance of this state, and on fish breeding. The feeding and breeding of fishes is the subject of considerable discllssion and argument in all "fish" circles. There is much yet to be learned, but on the other hand there arc Illany straightforward simple principles which arc often forgotten, and there is also much prejudice wi1ich oftcn operates ro makc a simple job complicated and a failure. Cold-water and goldfish enthusiasts may complain that the tropica[s seem to get an overweight share of the text. This is because they need it. This book is not concerned with fancy varieties or show standards, except so far as they need sp cial conditions for main­ tenance or breeding. Thus, goldfish breeding is only a special case of carp breeding in general and needs no extensive treatment. The same applies to their general Care. Ancient Egyptians were probably the first to keep the fish for ornamental purpose. World’s first public aquarium was established in Regents Park in London in 1853. Earlier only coldwater fishes were kept as pets as there was no practical system of heating which is required for tropical freshwater fish. The invention of electricity opened a vast scope of development in aquarium keeping. The ease of quick transportation and facilities for carting in temperature controlled packaging has broadened the horizon for this hobby.

Infusoria were cultured using vegetables (Brassica pekinensis and Brassica International Islamic University chinensis) and dry fish meal with 30 ppt, 15 ppt saline water and freshwater in 40 liter aquaria. In the 30 Malaysia, Malaysia and 15 ppt aquaria, Euplotes sp. was the dominant species and cell sizes were 60–80 µm. Light is in fact electromagnetic radiation and is based on photons, the carrier of all wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. The length of these wavelengths are expressed in nanometers (nm), 1 nanometer equaling 1 billionth of a meter. Every wavelength is represented by a different colour. The sun is yellow because its light is most powerful at the visible wavelength of yellow. There are many wavelengths beyond visible light, some of them shorter and some of them longer, all together they compose the electromagnetic spectrum. The shortest wavelengths of the spectrum are in fact the most powerful, starting with gamma rays, followed by X-rays, then ultraviolet light, and then visible light which represents a very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Liperovskaya Zool.Zh.27,2, 125-36. 1948 The present work appertains to a series of investigations in the field of trophodynamics of water bodies conducted by the department of hydrobiology "Mosrybvtuza" under the leadership of Prof. Director N.S. Gaevska. Usually with quantitative collections of benthos ostracoda are hardly taken account of. But with the employment of special methods it is possible to be convinced that they are encountered in massive numbers (Tseeb(10), Mordukhai-Boltovskoi (7)). The role of ostracods in the nutrition of fish is recognised as important by many authors (Ostroumov, 1939, Pankratova. (8), Voroboev (3), Chugunov (11)). On the question of the feeding of ostracods, in the literature there are only the fragmentary indications of Klie (14), Wolf (19), and Wohlgemuth (l8) about the occurrence in the gut of ostracods of algae (diatoms, desmids) and detritus. The study of the feeding of ostracods was conducted by us both by the method of dissecting the guts of ostracods taken from 2. natural waters, and by the method of feeding ostracods under laboratory conditions with a variety of food objects. Moreover, with a view to revision of obtained quantitative data, for determination of food requirements of ostracods the respiration method was applied.
