Elaeocarpus is a genus Tamil Nadu, India belonging to the family, Elaeocarpaceae. In Indian traditional system of medicine, different parts of rudraksha were taken for the alleviation of various health related problems such as mental disorders, K Thenmozhi PG and Research Department of headache, skin diseases and for healing wounds. The present study was undertaken to address Botany, Kongunadu Arts and phytochemical and in vitro antioxidant potential for the medicinal plant species, Elaeocarpus munronii Science College, Coimbatore, and Elaeocarpus tuberculatus. Quantification of phytochemicals for various solvent systems viz., Tamil Nadu, India petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, ethanol and aqueous extracts and plant parts viz., leaf, stem, flower and fruit for the two medicinal plant species, E. munronii and E. tuberculatus were analyzed. Antioxidant and B Veena free radical scavenging potential in terms of DPPH, ABTS.+, reducing power, ferrous ion and superoxide PG and Research Department of radical scavenging activity were assessed using standard procedures. From the results obtained, the Botany, Kongunadu Arts and ethanolic leaf extracts of both the plant species of Elaeocarpus encompass significant activity. -

ABSTRACT Elaeocarpus ganitrus (syn: Elaeocarpus sphaericus; Elaeocarpaceae) is a large evergreen big-leaved tree. Elaeocarpus ganitrus is a medium sized tree occurring in Nepal, Bihar, Bengal, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Bombay, and cultivated as an ornamental tree in various parts of India. Hindu mythology believes that, anyone who wears Rudraksha beads get the mental and physical prowess to get spiritual illumination. According to Ayurvedic medicine Rudraksha is used in the managing of blood pressure, asthma, mental disorders, diabetes, gynecological disorders and neurological disorders. The Elaeocarpus ganitrus is an inhabitant shrub that has a good rich history of traditional uses in medicine. Present review has been attempting to make to collect the botanical, ethnomedicinal, pharmacological information and therapeutic utility of Elaeocarpus ganitrus on the basis of current science. The species were characterized as zoochorous, anemochorous and autochorous. Out of 15,258 individuals, 87 % showed zoochory as a mode of dispersal, accounting for 68.1 % of the total species encountered. A test of independence between leaf habit (evergreen/deciduous) and dispersal modes showed that more than the expected number of evergreen species was zoochorous. The cumulative disturbance index (CDI) was significantly negatively correlated with zoochory (P < 0.05); on the other hand no specific trend of anemochory with disturbance was seen. The pre-monsoon period (February to May) was found to be the peak period for fruiting of around 64 % of species irrespective of their dispersal mode. -

Flying squirrels consumed 4 major plant parts belonging to 9 plant species. Ficus racemosa was the most-eaten species (68.1%) during the period of the study, followed by Cullenia exarillata (9.57%) and Artocarpus heterophyllus (6.38%). The most commonly consumed food item was the fruit of F. racemosa (48.93%). Leaves formed an important component of the diet (32.97%) and the leaves of F. racemosa were consumed more than those of any other species. Flying squirrels proved to be tolerant of disturbance and exploited food resources at the fragment edge, including exotic planted species. ABSTRACT In the present study, the anti-microbial efficacy of acetone, methanol and water extracts of leaf, stem bark and fruit of Elaeocarpus tuberculatus Roxb. (Elaeocarpaceae). The plant parts were examined against four bacterial species (Shigella sonnei, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and a fungal species (Candida albicans) using the agar well diffusion method. The plant extracts exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of microorganisms, especially; the acetone and methanol extracts of leaf and stem bark displayed maximum anti-bacterial activity against all the bacterial species studied. The plant extracts also displayed high anti-fungal activity against Candida albicans particularly; the acetone extract showed pronounced anti-fungal activity. Generally, the lower concentrations of the extracts were susceptible to the fungal pathogen. The results of the study confirm the plant E. tuberculatus could also be a new source for anti-microbial drug discovery. There are about six tribal communities inhabiting this area. They have a very good knowledge of wild edible plants in their surrounding forest. Plants parts are mostly consumed as direct food. Ancient Indian knowledge on medicinal plants was wide and comprehensive. Vedic literature stands to the proof of their vast knowledge on herbal medicines. Al- though the ancient systems of herbal medicine was prevalent throughout the country, it suffered a severe set back with the introduction of Allopathy. But currentty there is a reawakening which has resulted in a more scientific appro- ach to the Vedic days store of knowledge of medicinal plants. A good number of medicinal plants are found mentioned in the ancient classical Ayurvedic texts 'Charaka Samhita'. 'Susruta Samhita' and 'Astanga Hrdaya Samhita'. But many of them still remain to be properly identified. During the process of urbanization the contact with plants in their natural habitat was lost, creating confusion in the correct identity of many plants. The indiscriminate use of Sanskrit names and synonyms in later publications which are not given in the ancient treatises, added to this problem. Moreover many irregularities have crept in, in the identity ofraw material due to wrong interpretations of the Sanskrit names of medicinal plants.
