Genus Sterculia is widely recognized by its phytomedicinal and ethnomedicinal attributes. The study is aimed to evaluate the qualitative analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thin layer chromatography (TLC), total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the crude hydro-methanolic extract of S. urens root. Results: The antioxidant activity, antimicrobial assay for clinical isolates, and TPC were measured by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity, agar well diffusion method, and Folin–Ciocalteu assay respectively. Hydro- methanolic extract confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenols, saponins, steroids, and glycosides as primary and secondary metabolites, which was later confirmed by TLC. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the presence of alkanes, alkenes, alkyl halides, halogen compounds, primary alcohol, tertiary alcohol, aldehyde, aromatic amine, secondary amines, amide group, and carboxylic acid. The crude extract was composed of a significant quantity of total phenolic content with 705 ± 0.40 mg GAE/g. Synergistically, the IC50 value of the crude extract and ascorbic acid was found to be 27.055 μg/ml and 37.244 μg/ml, respectively, which suggests that root extract possesses strong antioxidant properties. The majority of the microbial strains exhibited varying degrees of sensitivity to the root extract with a notable inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae,andPenicillium glaucum.

QAISER Department of Botany, University of Karachi, Karachi-75270, Pakistan *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Abstract The seed morphological studies of 75 taxa belonging to 6 sub-families of the family Malvaceae were carried out from Pakistan. In Pakistan the family Malvaceae is represented by 6 sub-families viz., Byttnerioideae, Dombeyoideae, Malvoideae, Bombacoideae, Helicteroideae and Sterculioideae. The seed macro and micro morphological characters are examined, using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Detailed seed morphological descriptions, micrographs and keys based on seed characters are also provided. A variety in various quantitative and qualitative seed characters was observed. The micro-morphological characters of seeds are quite significant to strengthen the taxonomic decisions within the family Malvaceae at various levels. The data obtained from the seed morphological characters were analyzed numerically to trace out the phylogenetic affinities for the taxa within the family Malvaceae from Pakistan. Abstract Taxonomy, updated nomenclature and occurrence of the species belonging to the family Sterculiaceae in Bangladesh have been presented. Detailed herbarium study at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (K), Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh (E), British Museum (BM), Bangladesh National Herbarium (DACB) and Dhaka University Salar Khan Herbarium (DUSH) has revealed the occurrence of 32 species under 15 genera of the Sterculiaceae in Bangladesh. The correct name, important synonym(s), salient diagnostic characteristics, specimens examined and distributional notes have been provided for each species. Dichotomous bracketed keys have also been presented for identification of genera and species. Introduction The Sterculiaceae is a family of tropical and sub-tropical plants, comprising nearly 70 genera and 1,500 species (Cronquist, 1981). They are characterized by the presence of stellate hairs, bilocular anthers, 10 to numerous stamens in two or more whorls, mostly connate by their filaments, superior ovary, anatropous ovules and axile placentation. The family consists of soft- wooded trees and shrubs, and a few herbaceous and climbing species. Many species growing in rain forests are remarkable for their development of plank buttresses. Systematically it is placed in the Malvales by Engler and Prantle (1896), and shows many features in common with the other families of that group, namely Tiliaceae, Elaeocarpaceae, Bombacaceae and Malvaceae.

Abstract Brachychiton rupestris and Brachychiton luridum are deciduous trees belonging to family Malvaceae. Several members of the genus Brachychiton and its related genus, Sterculia, are used in folk medicine for the treatment of infections. Herein, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the total extracts, n-hexane, dichloromethane as well as the ethyl acetate fractions of the leaves of both species using agar well diffusion method in an effort to better consolidate the scientific basis for their traditional uses.

Don, Sterculia platanifolia L.f. and Sterculia foetida L.) grown in Egypt were selected for studying from a pharmacognostical point of view. On the basis of some morphological features, these species were reclassified under different genera and revised as Pterygota alata (Roxb.) R. Br., Brachychiton populneus (Schott & Endl.) R. Br. and Firmiana simplex (L.) W. Wight, respectively. Sterculia foetida L. remained belonging to genus Sterculia. In the present study, genetic, botanical, phytochemical and biological studies were performed in order to find the infrageneric relationships among the four taxa. Genetic analysis through DNA (RAPD-PCR fingerprinting of the fresh leaves) and protein (SDS-PAGE analysis of the seeds) profilings showed great genetic variations between the studied species. The botanical study included the investigation of macromorphological (vegetative and floral morphology) and micromorphological (leaves) characters. Macromorphological characters displayed considerable variation in leaves, inflorescence, fruits and seeds, while the micromorphological ones showed various similarities among the four species. Non- glandular and glandular trichomes were the main differentiating characters among the four species.

Originalmente se describían con habito arbóreo, como lianas o hierbas. Sus hojas son alternadas y simples, rara vez son palmadas lobadas o compuestas; las estipulas pueden estar presentes pero caen de forma temprana. Sus flores hermafroditas o unisexuales, las flores sonactinimorfas y rara vez cigomorfas. El perianto es comúnmente uniseriado, consistiendo de 3 a 5 valvas, sépalos basalmente conados, pero a veces un numero igual de pétalos puede estar presentes. El androceo frecuentemente consiste en dos formaciones en espiral con cinco estambres cada uno, unidos por sus filamentos en un tubo que comúnmente rodea el ovario o sobresale desde un androforo. El gineceo consiste en un solo pistilo complejo de cuatro a cinco carpelos débilmente unidos el ovario es supero con cuatro a cinco loculos, cada uno con al menos dos óvulos frutos pueden ser de varios tipos: secos, cápsulas y folículos (Sterculia y Cola), o bien carnosos.
