This book relates the fascinating story of Le Griffon—its background, information about the many claims of discovery made in the past 200 years, the excitement of possible discoveries (including the most recent one)—and where the wreck likely is. #650 Ashes Under Water: The SS Eastland and the Shipwreck that Shook America by Michael McCarthy $25.95 (Members $23.36) In 1915, Chicago commuters were horrified to see the S.S. Eastland, a massive Lake Michigan steamship, flip over while tied to its dock. More than eight hundred poor factory workers and their children drowned. Drawing on previously unpublished evidence from the National Archives, Ashes Under Water is the untold story of a mysterious industrial atrocity. A national tragedy, Chicago politics, corrupt businessmen, a courtroom drama-all woven into one spellbinding narrative. #651 Floating Palaces of the Great Lakes: A History of Passenger Steamships on the Inland Seas by Joel Stone $26.95 (Members $24.26) On the Great Lakes palatial ships created memories and livelihoods for millions while carrying passengers between the region’s major industrial ports. In Floating Palaces of the Great Lakes, Joel Stone revisits this important era of maritime history, packed with elegance and adventure, politics and wealth, triumph and tragedy. Old Favorites #563 The Great White Fleet: Celebrating Canada Steamship Lines Passenger Ships by John Henry $30.00 (Members $27.00) The passenger steamers of Canada Steamship Lines were known collectively as the Great White Fleet. These ships—from day-excursion vessels to well-appointed cruise ships—had rich histories. This is the story of the beloved steamers of the Great White Fleet from 1913–1965, when the passenger vessels stopped running. Nearly half a century after the last passenger boats sailed, this superbly produced, amply illustrated hardcover book provides a window into a wonderful, lost way of life. #361 Centennial: Steaming through the American Century by Christopher Winters $50.00 (Members $45.00) Great Lakes marine photographer and historian Chris Winters spent five years creating a vivid record of life aboard steamer St. Mary’s Challenger as she approached the centennial anniversary of her maiden voyage in 2006. This is a stunning, hardcover record of an extraordinary ship, beauti- fully photographed and lovingly produced to exacting standards, with text capturing perfectly the magic that is a steamboat in action. #651 Shipwrecked: Reflections of the Sole Survivor by Dennis Hale $25.99 (Members $23.39) Dennis Hale was the only survivor of the steamer Daniel J. Morrell, which sank on Lake Huron in late November 1966. This book serves as his autobiography. Although he’s written about the shipwreck before, this self-published volume delves deeper into the emotional side of the story. Editor’s note: Dennis Hale passed away on September 2, 2015. #32 A Great Lakes Treasury of Old Postcards: Canadian Harbour Scenes 1894- 1960 by Lorenzo Marcolin $9.95 (Members $8.96) In over 42 years of collecting Great Lakes Postcards, Lorenzo and Carol Marcolin have accumulated an important visual history of the Canadian shores of the Great Lakes. Lovingly restored without tampering with their historical veracity, the cards show you a world with both scenic beauty and industrial ugliness.
