This is a brand new class and recently developed technique by Grace. The technique is an offshoot of Grace’s extremely popular and successful Heat-Set technique. This is used heavily in designs but they are hand stitched. The technique as developed by Grace, is done by machine, is extemely easy and foolproof. It lends itself to stained glass/mosaic textile effects and graphic type design interpreted in fabric. Someone Must Wash the Dishes: An Anti-Suffrage Satire Michele LaRue All levels Friday, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Heritage Ballroom C Page 33 of 58

#22203 - Special Event

Many women fought against getting the vote, but none with more charm, prettier clothes—and less logic—than the fictional speaker in Someone Must Wash the Dishes: An Anti-Suffrage Satire. “Woman Suffrage is the reform against nature,” proclaims our unlikely, but irresistibly likeable, heroine. “Ladies, get what you want. Make a scene. Make home a hell on earth—but do it in a womanly way! That is so much more dignified and refined than walking up to a ballot box and dropping in a piece of paper!” In this witty monologue, written in 1912 by pro-suffragist Marie Jenney Howe, the cheerfully single-minded speaker contradicts every point she makes as she crusades to preserve the Home and save the Nation from anarchy. michelelarue.com Member: $28 Retail: $35

#25504 - Hands on Scrap Slapping

By Beth Helfter

This is a fabric sharing class. You are asked to cut the following amounts of 3" squares and bring them to class to put into a pool for everyone to draw from. It makes it way more fun. Please use good quality quilting fabrics only. And remember the golden rule of fabric sharing: if you wouldn't want to use it, others won't either.

Beth recommends the following: Page 50 of 58

 Cut a 9" square of each fabric you will be sharing (raid your scrap bins!)  Cut each 9" square into (9) - 3" squares.

Fabrics can be solid, tone on tone, or prints, but should "read" the color you are asked to cut.

Any questions? Don't be shy! Contact Beth at [email protected].

#27501 - Scrappy Tumbling Block Wall Quilt Sample size: approx. 26 1/2” X 28” Kelly Ashton, designer / instructor NOTE: This is a project whose finished size is easily adjusted simply by adding more tumbling blocks until you achieve the desired size. If you wish to make the sample size, 2/3 yd. is ample for the setting pieces and outside border. If you think you may want to make a larger quilt, purchase the amount of fabric that is the length of your desired quilt plus 1/2 yard for a safety margin (for this calculation, border widths can’t be larger than 8 1/2” wide). (Example: if you want a quilt that is 108” long, purchase 3 1/2 yds of setting / border fabric. If you’re not sure the finished size you want, I suggest waiting and choosing a border fabric later.

Binding, backing, and batting can be determined when you decide what size quilt you wish to make. (For the sample size: backing – 1 yd; binding 1/2 yd; batting at least 30” x 30” – these are ample amounts.)

Pre-workshop Instructions: Please do this before class! 1) Prepare all of your block fabrics by generously (quite damp; not dripping wet) spritzing them with Mary Ellen’s Best Press (or spray starch) and pressing them until dry with an iron on cotton setting (no steam). Or, you can spritz the fabrics, iron them briefly, put them in the dryer on cotton setting until dry, then press out the wrinkles (using steam).

2) From each prepared block fabric (except stripes / directional fabrics), cut 2 1/4” fabric strips and bring these strips to class. Bring uncut directional or striped fabrics to class and we’ll determine the size strip to cut.

I’m looking forward to having you in class! We’re going to have a great time together working Page 51 of 58

on this beautiful project!!

#27502 - Patriot Table Topper

Approximately 29” x 33” Kelly Ashton (Kellyquilter Designs), Instructor Pre-Workshop Instructions: Please read all information and have the pre-workshop preparations completed prior to class. Thank you! I’m looking forward to having you in class! See you soon! Kelly

Pre-Workshop Fabric Preparation:

1) Stabilizing: Using Mary Ellen’s Best Press, spritz your fabrics generously and press-to-dry with a dry iron on cotton setting. This adds additional “body” to your fabric and helps to stabilize it prior to cutting.

2) Cutting for the workshop:

- From each of 3 of the star petal fabrics*, cut one 2 1/4” x width-of-fabric (~42”) strip.

- From the star center fabric*, cut one 2 1/4” x width-of-fabric (~42”) strip.

*If any of these fabrics are directional or stripes, please do not cut strips from directional fabrics prior to class. Bring the intact 1/8yd. prepared fabric and we’ll determine the correct strip width for you to cut..

- From the high contrast fabric (red in my project), cut three 2 1/4” x width-of-fabric (~42”) strips

- From the white / cream (neutral background) fabric, cut three 2 1/4” x width-of-fabric (~42”) strips

The fabrics / fabric strips listed in #2 above are the only fabrics that you must bring to the class.

#27503 - Your Signature By the “X”, Please

Kelly Ashton

Fabric list to complete the project In addition to the layer cake squares and charm squares, you will need:

 Background: 1 ½ yards (this includes the ½ yd. of prepared background fabric that you bring to class)  Sashing: READ CAREFULLY o If you are NOT using a repetitive border print: 1 yd o If you are using a repetitive border print that runs the length of the fabric: . 12 cut pieces, each approximately 15” in length . The width of the strip depends on the width of the “printed stripe”, but cannot be wider than 5 ½” cut (5” finished). . SO, if there are 4-5 full repeats of the stripe in the width of the fabric, purchase 1 ½ yds. However, if you wish to “fussy cut” the sashing strips, as I did, buy at least 2 yards.  Inner / Outer Border (narrow red in my quilt): 1 yard  Mid Border (blue print between the narrow red in my quilt): o If NOT fussy-cutting: ¾ yd. o If you are fussy-cutting a lengthwise repetitive stripe, there must be a minimum of four usable stripes across the fabric (including adequate seam allowance) AND the border stripe cannot be more than 3 ½” wide, cut (3” wide “finished”): 1 2/3 yd.  Backing: 3 ¾ yard (based on 44-45” wide fabric)  Binding: ¾ yard

Pre-Workshop Instructions Fabric Preparation and Pre-cutting

1. Preparing your Layer Cake™ and Charm Pack™ squares: Generously spritz (well- dampened; not drippy wet) the 10” and 5” squares with Mary Ellen’s Best Press. Press squares dry using a dry iron on cotton setting. This process pre-shrinks the squares and adds some extra body / stability to the fabric. Bring several squares of both sizes to the workshop. We will cut the squares into pieces for the blocks in class.

2. Preparing your background fabric: For class, prepare 1/2 yard of your background fabric in the same way you prepared the squares in #1.

3. Cutting your background fabric: From the 1/2 yard of prepared background fabric, cut the following and bring to class: -one strip, 2” x width of fabric -one strip, 5 1/2” x width of fabric -one strip, 1 1/2” x width of fabric -one strip, 3 1/2” x width of fabric Save the “leftovers” from the 1/2 yard of background and bring it to class, “just in case”.

Pre-Workshop Preparation: Please arrive at class with these tasks completed. Thanks!

1. Please “spritz”** the fabrics for the top with Mary Ellen’s Best Press and press until dry with a dry iron using the cotton setting. **I use the Mary Ellen’s Best Press generously, making sure the fabric is well dampened, but not dripping wet. 2. Pre-class cutting instructions: If you have chosen a directional fabric for any of the stars, accent, or background, please don’t cut it until class. I will help you determine the size strip needed to accomplish placing the direction of the print the way that you’d like it in your project. From each of the star fabrics, accent fabric and background fabric that is NOT directional, please cut the following: One width-of-fabric strip, 2 1/4” x width-of-fabric. #29511 - Leaf Sampler with Jane Sassaman

The students should back the 19" X 24" background fabric with iron-on interfacing. A steam iron works best to adhere it. I like ShirTailor Interfacing 950F by Pellon which can usually be found at the "big box stores. The interfacing can be butt-up together, if it is not wide enough. Also back a 12" square of fabric with interfacing for your practice stitches.

Then they should trace 15 leaves and stems on to the paper side of the fusible web (WonderUnder). If they trace all the leaves in a group and all the stems in a group, it will be easier. Fuse the stem tracings (as one group)to the back of the stem fabric and fuse the leaves to the back of the leaf fabric or fabrics. Use any colors that you'd like... you get points for doing it differently than me.

Cut out the leaves and stems. You can use scissors, rotary cutter or an Xacto knife with a # 11blade to cut them out. Strip off the protective paper backing and arrange the leaves and stems on the black background fabric in any way you like. Fuse them in place.

Bring 50 weight (regular sewing) threads that match your fabrics and bobbins to match. You may want to bring some different colors and weights (40 or 30 wt.) to play with, too.

Leaf template below. Page 58 of 58
