MEETING 124 In two decades, Bill Pallot, the most talked- about antique dealer in the media, has built up a collection that may be highly disparate at first glance, but is truly fascinating. We explore this cabinet of curiosities. 16 UPCOMING This chest from the Edo period, which once belonged to Cardinal Mazarin, will be one of the highlights of the sales in France this spring, together with one of the rare nudes painted by Nicolas de Staël, a portrait from Fayum and a terracotta from the Italian Renaissance. Worth noting: Paris sales dedicated to 20th century decorative arts. CONTENTS THE MAGAZINE 128 DESIGN Marcel By. Behind this recently-formed design production company we find Stephan Lanez, a designer with the robust tempera- ment of an entrepreneur passionate about know-how and stories. HERITAGE 136 Faced with natural disasters and the changes of an ailing world, a number of artists are reacting and making proposals. Focus. 132 COLLECTION The famous Meiyintang collection of ritual Chinese bronzes is on show for the first time… It can be seen at the Musée des Arts Asiatiques Guimet in Paris until 10 June. 146 TRENDS From Eden to Japan, Hispano-Moresque and Anglo-Chinese gardens, landscape gardening has always been an essential attribute of power. From left to right MEETING © Karl Lagerfeld 2013 - DESIGN © Théo Baulig - HERITAGE © Laurence Godart - COLLECTION © Vincent Girier-Dufournier THE MAGAZINE EDITORIAL For this spring issue, we've decided to talk about the weather... beyond any meteorological considerations of course, even if we Parisians have to admit that we are more than glad to see the sun again! A positive shower of records has rained down on the art market over the past few weeks. For Paris alone, numerous specialties registered bids of over a million, first and foremost Old Masters, dominated by the figures of Jacobus Vrel and Charles le Brun. The latest analyses of the Chinese market, somewhat on the gloomy side, led us to fear a drop in prices. DR But far from it: there is no depression for ceramics, bronzes or textiles from the Middle Kingdom. Lastly, we note that the volume of sales for Stéphanie Perris-Delmas drawings, the Parisian speciality of the month, has hardly changed at all, EDITORIAL MANAGER an upward price curve has been noticed for 19th century works. So these are our news for the last few days. Forecasts, meanwhile, look pretty sunny judging by the May programme, which includes a Japa- nese lacquer chest that once belonged to Mazarin, a painting by Nicolas de Staël and a terracotta from the Renaissance. Once again, in contrast to many other sectors, the barometer for art and the art market is set fair! The next exhibition will be taking over the resident doctor's house in the Tower of London from 13 to 23 May, in association with the British collector, Karen Marr. Works by artists including Boltanski, Sugimoto and Neu (the photo shows a smoke- blackened crystal glass from his 2007 series of 23 pieces) will be illustra- ting symbolic themes inherent to the place: light and darkness, life and death, good and evil. Department of History The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Date March 21, 1968 - ABSTRACT - The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the principal challenges to royal authority and the means by which royal authority was maintained in France during the first War of Religion (1561-1563). The latter half of the sixteenth century was a critical period for the French monarchy. Great noble families attempted to re-establish their feudal power at the expense of the crown. Francis II and Charles IX, kings who were merely boys, succeeded strong monarchs on the throne. The kingdom was im• poverished by foreign wars and overrun by veteran soldiers, ill- absorbed into civil life.

It is doubtful indeed, whether an adequate account of his career will ever be possible, because his activities on behalf of suffering humanity were so extraordinarily varied, and the details of them have been forgotten even by himself. All that has been intended in the writing of these pages has been the paying of an offering of friendship, to one who has caused many of us to believe, by the quality of his friendship, in the reality of the indwelling Spirit of Christ, as a personal force which may transform humanity into the mirror of Christ. • The Development French and Transformation
THE DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSFORMATION OF FRENCH PROTESTANTISM JAMES R. RENICK Princeton, New Jersey The study of the development and transformation of French Protestantism in the sixteenth century presents a situation strikingly related to the contemporary scene. Nowhere is this relationship more clear than on the many foreign missionary fields of the world where Prot estant .evangelical missions have made such an impact during the past century. In the evangelization of large unbelieving populations and in the organization and training of indigenous national churches and Christian leadership, a host of vital questions have faced ooth missionary and national Christian alike. The desirability of highly -developed ecclesias tical organization, the wisdom of seeking the support of sympathetic officials in the local and national governments, the degree of association of the national church with foreign sources of income and power, the use of converted priests and monks in public Christian work are all matters common to the sixteenth century and to our present era. The questions have become no less delicate or crucial with the passage of centuries. The seriousness of the outcome is illustrated by the tragic results which followed 1562 in France. In our modern situation the final outcome is yet to be determined in many areas. The sixteenth century was" ... an age of transition ... a period of instability, of rapidly changing concepts, of widening vistas, and of unprecedented innovations. "1 Western Europe experienced the consolidation of the nation -state, the continued rise of the "New Monarchies," the great expansion of the European "money-economy, " the declaration of religious reform, the rise and spread of the Lutheran and Reformed faiths, and the revitalization of the Catholic Church through the Counter-Reformation.
