Band: California Breed (UK/ USA) Genre: Hard Rock Label: Frontiers Records Album Title: California Breed Duration: 49:06 Releasedate: 16.05.2014 It has been Julian Lennon (right, the son of the upper-Beatle), who gave Glenn Hughes, after the way too early ending of Black Country Communion, the hint that he absolutely had to listen to that young guitarist from New York. By that he did the music world a great favour, as it can be clearly seen by this album. There is talk of the to date unknown 23-year-old Andrew Watt. Hugh went to one of his concerts and was convinced immediately. Already within the first shared session it worked perfectly and by "Solo" and "The Grey" the first songs together came into being. Joined by Hugh's old companion Jason Bonham, California Breed was born. The trio directly adjourned to the studio and out of it came twelve songs, which are quite hot. "It's proper rock, but at the same time it's very now" is how Hughes describes the group and by that he gets to the heart of it. Already with the opener "The Way" the trio parties hard. Incredibly forceful and brash, the current probably best rhythm-section Hugh's/ Bonham's goes about it. Glenn Hughes sings like a young God and surely lets contemporaries like Coverdale, Rogers or Plant go green with envy. Times soulful, times aggressive and filled by dynamic, times sensitive – no tone seems to be too high for the singing bassist. Guitarist Watt also convinces with multifacetedness. Acoustic passages like the one within "Invisible" he merges skillfully with Riff-Rock à la Keith Richards ("Spit You Out") and leading, reminding of Led Zeppelin ("Chemical Rain") Heavy-Guitars. Also his solos, to mention for example the one in "Sweet Tea", achieves to convince entirely. At the same time California Breed comes up with catchy but never chumming up melodies again and again in an almost random manner. Just listen to the songs "Sweet Tea" or "The Grey"! The trio put the cherry on the cake in the ending by "Solo". Slow acoustical beginning, constant dramatically increase and bombastic orchestral final – well, if that's not how to feel reminded of the good old "Stairway To Heaven". Despite its diversity the album seems constantly very homogenous and at no time tiring or boring. The production is very dynamic and unpolished. The album never seems overproduced and lets the songs be edgy. Three exceptional musicians did the work here, which gets more than obvious with each tone played. And if beforehand California Breed modestly called itself "the most exciting new band 2014", I can only add: That's right! Conclusion: From the first to the last tone it's a top-album, which must not be missing in any collection and which lives the ending of Black Country Communion down. Friends of the hard music across every genre get their money's worth at 100%.
