Hailed as “the most important book-publishing project in the nation’s history” ( Newsweek ), this award-winning series helps to foster apprecation for America’s most treasured writers in “the finest-looking, longest-lasting edition ever made” ( The New Republic ). Since 1982, over 220 volumes have been published, each containing up to 1600 pages and including a number of works. In many cases, the complete works of a writer are collected in as few as three compact volumes. New volumes are added each year to make all the essential writings of America’s foremost novelists, historians, poets, essayists, philosophers, play - wrights, journalists, and statesmen part of The Library of America. Each volume features: authoritative, unabridged texts • a chronology of the author’s life, helpful notes, and a brief textual essay • a handsomely designed, easy-to-read page • high-quality, acid-free paper, bound in a cloth cover and sewn to lie flat when opened • a ribbon marker and printed end papers. To keep the volumes affordable, the costs to maintain the series’ extraordinarily high standards of textual, editorial, and production quality are not passed on to the reader in the books’ prices, which are lower per page than most hardcovers and even paperbacks. To cover these costs and to keep all previously published volumes in print, grants and contributions are needed annually, including gifts to the Guardians of American Letters Fund. About the Guardians of American Letters: Guardians of American Letters help to ensure that all volumes in the series remain continuously in print and available to readers. With a one-time gift of $50,000 to the Guardians of American Letters Fund, donors are recognized on an acknowledgment page of every future printing of the volume of the donor’s choice. Some Guardians adopt volumes in honor or in memory of a family member, friend, or associate. Gifts to the Guardians Fund help The Library of America keep pace with the growth in reprint expenditures and maintain an ever-growing backlist. For information and a list of volumes available for adoption, please write to [email protected] or call Karen Duda at The Library of America, 212.303.3360. A complete list of Guardians follows.
