Barnes. 1887 April: Left high school to work at Porter and Coates, dealer in books and fine prints. 1888 Taught himself to etch with The Etcher's Handbook by Philip Gilbert Hamerton. 1890 Began work for A. Edward Newton designing novelties, calendars, etc. Joined night freehand drawing class at the Spring Garden Institute. First painting, Self Portrait. 1891 Left Newton and began work as a free-lance artist doing novelties, advertisements, lettering certificates and diplomas. 1892 Began work in the art department of the Philadelphia Inquirer. -

Durand’s Progress, Most Valuable Gift of a Single Work of Art in VMFA’s History, Enters Museum Collection Gift marks first time the painting has been in public domain since its creation in 1853 Richmond, VA––The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts recently received the generous anonymous gift of Asher B. Durand’s painting Progress (The Advance of Civilization), which was approved by the VMFA Board of Trustees yesterday. One of the most important works of American art in private hands, this is the highest valued gift of a single work of art in VMFA’s history, and represents the first time the painting has been held outside of private collections since it was painted in 1853. Because of the extraordinary generosity of the donor, this beloved, canonical painting now enters the public domain, allowing the citizens of Virginia to be among the first to benefit from its presence in its new home at VMFA. Commissioned by the financier and industrialist Charles Gould (1811–1870), this work complements VMFA’s collection of paintings by other Hudson River School artists, including Thomas Cole, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Frederic Edwin Church, George Inness and Robert Seldon Duncanson. Only a handful of masterpieces in American art—including Thomas Cole’s The Oxbow and George Inness’s The Lackawanna Valley (which hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art respectively)—rival Progress in dramatizing the meeting of nature and civilization. -

Art, Artists and Nature: The Hudson River School The landscape paintings created by the 19 th century artist known as the Hudson River School celebrate the majestic beauty of the American wilderness. Students will learn about the elements of art, early 19 th century American culture, the creative process, environmental concerns and the connections to the birth of American literature. New York State Standards: Elementary, Intermediate, and Commencement The Visual Arts – Standards 1, 2, 3, 4 Social Studies – Standards 1, 3 ELA – Standards 1, 3, 4 BRIEF HISTORY By the mid-nineteenth century, the United States was no longer the vast, wild frontier it had been just one hundred years earlier. Cities and industries determined where the wilderness would remain, and a clear shift in feeling toward the American wilderness was increasingly ruled by a new found reverence and longing for the undisturbed land. At the same time, European influences - including the European Romantic Movement - continued to shape much of American thought, along with other influences that were distinctly and uniquely American. The traditions of American Indians and their relationship with nature became a recognizable part of this distinctly American Romanticism. American writers put words to this new romantic view of nature in their works, further influencing the evolution of American thought about the natural world. It found means of expression not only in literature, but in the visual arts as well. A focus on the beauty of the wilderness became the passion for many artists, the most notable came to be known as the Hudson River School Artists. The Hudson River School was a group of painters, who between 1820s and the late nineteenth century, established the first true tradition of landscape painting in the United States. -

Journal of Ecocriticism 5(2) July 2013 The Making of a Conservationist: Audubon’s Ecological Memory Christian Knoeller (Purdue University)* Abstract While Audubon’s exploits as consummate artist, accomplished naturalist, and aspiring entrepreneur are widely recognized, his contributions as author and nascent conservationist remain less fully appreciated. Extensive travels observing and documenting wildlife as an artist-naturalist gave him a unique perspective on how human-induced changes to the landscape impacted wildlife. He lamented the reduction in range of many species and destruction of historic breeding grounds, as well as declining populations caused by overhunting and habitat loss. His understanding of changing landscapes might be thought of in terms of ecological memory reflected in his narratives of environmental history. He described the destruction of forests and fisheries as well as the shrinking ranges of species including several now extinct such as the Passenger Pigeon, Carolina Parakeet, and Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Quadrupeds of North America and the Missouri River Journals depict the impact of environmental destruction he witnessed taking place in the first half of the 19th century. While these later works suggest a growing interest in conservation, Audubon had already voiced such concerns frequently in his earlier writings. Copious journals kept throughout his career in the field on America’s westering frontier reveal a keen appreciation for environmental history. By the time he arrived on the Upper Missouri in 1843, his values regarding the preservation of wildlife and habitat had been forged by writing for decades about his observations in the wild. What began as a quest to celebrate the natural abundance of North America by documenting every species of bird took on new dimensions as he expressed increasing concerns about conservation having recognized the extent of development and declines in wildlife during his lifetime. -

America Past was created to fill that gap. Some programs, such as those on religion and utopias, elaborate upon topics that may receive only a paragraph or two in many texts. -

Henry Varnum Poor: Commemorating 125 Years by Ron Michael, Curator, Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery Extended Essay - August 2012 Seeking Beauty Henry Varnum Poor is an important name not only for those interested in the history of Kansas or American art, but for Angular detail of Self Portrait, circa those who celebrate bountiful lives. Determined to follow his own 1917, lithograph, size unknown. path, he was committed to a life based on unadorned pursuits and a constant search for beauty. He once wrote to friend and fellow artist Birger Sandzén, “I want to make beautiful things so as to make our living as beautiful as possible.”1 Developing and using his multi-faceted talents, he also lived a life of great variety. At various times in his life he combined one or more professions as an artist, craftsman, builder, writer, teacher, organizer, administrator, evaluator and more. He was the perennial “jack-of-all-trades,” or perhaps more appropriately, a “renaissance man.” Just within the arts he explored a vast array of differing media – oils, watercolors, ceramics, pastels, drawings, frescos, etchings, lithography, woodworking, textiles, and illustration. He seemed to turn everything he touched into art. Perhaps nowhere is this better evident than the house he designed and constructed near New City, New York. Dubbed Crow House it was conceived as a place of comfort for his family – away from, but still accessible to, the bustling metropolis of New York and other Eastern cities. As he continued to write in his letter to Birger Sandzén, “The joy and satisfaction in making the house has been tremendous, and the future work of carving and painting our huge beams and stones will be great. -
