Returning to Ordinary Time

Entrance Antiphon: With the solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord, we mark the end After the Lord was baptised, the heavens were opened, of the Christmas season, and begin afresh the season of and the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, Ordinary Time. The word ‘ordinary’ can be rather misleading, and the voice of the Father thundered: as it denotes sameness or boring, even. Yet this new season of This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Ordinary Time is full of a unique richness, it is full of its own distinctive flavour. The famous Abbot of Solemnes, Dom Psalm Response: Prosper Guéranger observes that what the liturgical year effects Bless the Lord, my soul! our soul. He says that “the succession of seasons imparts to the Lord God, how great you are. Christian the elements of the Christian life”.

At the heart of this new ‘Ordinary Time’ season, is, of course, Gospel Acclamation: the distinctive green vestments worn by the clergy, and with Alleluia, Alleluia! which our altars and tabernacles are veiled. Behold the One of whom John said: I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. As this new season of Ordinary Time unfolds, we are invited to come to reflect upon those ‘elements of the Christian life’ that will aid our preparation and purification for the Kingdom. As these elements unfold in the Liturgy of the Word, and explained through the homilies over the next year, let us pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit afresh in our lives and in the life of our parish. Candlemas is coming order your candle now! February 2nd marks the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, Christ the light of the world comes into the Temple to be consecrated to his Father in heaven. The feast is traditionally known as ‘Candlemas’, a day in particular where churches bless the candles they will use throughout the year. After last year’s successful celebration and the desire of the faithful to take a blessed candle home, we are once again taking orders for the Candlemas Candle (pictured). Simply pop your name on the list and give the payment to your representative. The candle will be ordered, reserved for you and blessed at our Candlemas celebration at the 10.00am Mass in St. Mary’s and can be either collected at the end of the Mass, or sent to your community for collection. The candle measures 7/8" x 12" and carries an image of Our Lady carrying the light in her hands. Orders will need to be received by Sunday 20th January 2019 to ensure arrival in time for the Feast.
