Prayer Requests

Please pray for the repose of the souls of Noel Tolan, Patricia Jill Hale, Marie Curry, William Breen, Maureen Cherrett and all who have died recently. Also for those whose anniversaries occur at this time.

Please continue to pray for those suffering with Coronavirus, those who have died from the virus and most importantly plead for the end of the pandemic. A Plenary Indulgence is available to all who pray for these intentions under the usual conditions of making Sacramental Confession, Holy Communion (both as soon as possible after the lockdown) and prayers for the intentions of Pope Francis (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be). Acts to be performed for the indulgence include read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour, or recite the Rosary or the Way of the Cross. As is evident to all, the recitation of prayers and the reading of the Bible can be done without leaving home, and therefore in full compliance with the rules to counter the spread of the virus.

Please also remember in your prayers:

Carole Davies, Doreen Price, Olive Adams, Monica Lloyd, Stanley Whitfield, Baby Ronnie Gwyer, Rita Stokes, Biddy Williams, Mary Finnerty, Debbie Burnett (Reynish), Mary Richards, Reg Gough, Terrence Rose, Peter Okwusogu, Sr. Denise, Jeanette Bassett, John Ryan, Pat Bowen, Daniel Gabriel, Monica Pugsley, Catherine Wenegrieme, Annie Cutinha, Jean Main, Margaret Millwater, Zoe Coleman, Mellisah M and all the sick at home or in our hospitals, and all who care for them. To add a request please contact one of the priests.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

We continue to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturdays from 1.00- 2.00pm in the grounds of St. David’s Catholic Church, Park Crescent, Newport. For the safety of everyone involved, and to ensure social distancing, Confession will be offered in two ways:

Drive thru Confessions

For individuals who are on their own and can drive, you will be able to drive onto the grounds of the church and follow the one-way system to a designated point for Confession. Simply pull up at the point, wind down the window and make your Confession without leaving the car. Once done, follow the one-way system out of the church grounds.

Family/Household Walk up Confessions

For family/household groups, a priest will be available in the grounds, the position can vary so just ask the steward where to go. Social distancing must be maintained at all times; you may queue as your household, but two meters must be maintained with members of other households. If you are taking part in walk up Confessions we ask that you park responsibly near to the school and not drive on to the grounds for safety and to ensure traffic flow for drive thru confessions.

Confession by appointment @ St. Mary’s - Confessions can also be made, by appointment, in the parking area at the back of the presbytery at St. Mary’s. Please contact one of the priests directly to make suitable arrangements. Re-opening for private prayer . After 3 months, we are delighted that the church doors of St. Mary’s can now re-open once again for private prayer. This will obviously be in conformity with social-distancing and cleaning requirements, and during these times the church will have a limited capacity. As you will read in the Archbishop’s statement on the next page, churches across the Archdiocese are not likely to have the required health and safety measures in place (including 49 action points!) until at least next weekend. We cannot give a specific date for All Saints Parish, but we will publicize details as soon as we know.

Due to the work required for all this, we are only in a position to open St. Mary’s. Furthermore, it has been recommended that only one church in each local area be open.

Please note, the church will only be open for private prayer, NOT for Mass. This is the first in a step-by-step approach to being able to offer public liturgies. We have no idea when we will be able to gather for Mass publically again, but it is likely to be quite a while yet.

What days/times?

We cannot yet confirm which days and times the church will be open. Our guess at the moment is that we will open 2 or 3 days a week for a couple of hours. As soon as we have organised the schedule, we will let you know. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Volunteers

A huge thank you to all those who have volunteered to help with re-opening the church. The response this week has been much better. We will be in touch over the next few days to discuss how you can help out. The amount of time we can be open for depends on the number of volunteers we have. If you are interested in volunteering, but have not yet told us, then please contact one of the priests, or email [email protected]. We are aware that many of you would like to volunteer, but do not fall into the eligible categories. We apologise for this, but appreciate your desire to help.

The following are needed:

 Stewards  Cleaners (cleaning is required both during the time the church is open and when the church closes each day)

Volunteers must not be currently classified as vulnerable to the virus by the NHS i.e.:

 under 70 years of age  have no underlying medical conditions.  not be living with anyone who fits into the two conditions. Statement from Archbishop George Stack on the re-opening of churches for private prayer in

The Archdiocese of Cardiff and the Dioceses of Menevia and Wrexham welcomes the announcement by the First Minister that churches may be opened for private prayer from Monday 22nd June 2020. In the interests of your continued safety, given the measures that will need to be put in place in the coming days, it seems that Saturday 27th June will be the likely date for those churches who fulfil the health and safety requirements to be opened for a specific time to be announced. With the re-opening of churches, certain responsibilities are laid on both the parish and the diocese to ensure the health and safety of those who come to pray. Amongst these are the following: 1. Each parish will need to decide the hours of opening and these times will be published on the diocesan website, once the Risk Assessment has been made and the Health and Safety certificate has been issued. 2. Everyone visiting the church will be required to follow the necessary guidelines and signage to ensure the safety of all. 3. Each parish will need to provide two or three volunteers to ensure the safe flow and placement of people – seating, distance, cleaning, signage, stewards etc.

PLEASE NOTE: a. That the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday remains dispensed. b. That social distancing (currently two metres) must be observed – except for household groups. c. Each person must sanitise their hands on entering and leaving the church. d. Should a person feel unwell, or has been to an infected place in the past 14 days, he or she should not enter the Church. e. That the numbers entering the church will be restricted – depending on the seating available. One-way entry and exit paths will need to be established. f. That churches must be cleaned every day prior to opening, and portions cleaned during the time it is opened. Special attention must be paid to pews and door handles. Where possible, windows should be open. Air circulation helps reduce infection. g. Hymn books, prayer books, pamphlets and leaflets and other items may not be left around for people to handle h. That those who are “shielded” or self-isolating must remain at home and not come to the church for private prayer. i. Some of our churches will be unable to fulfil these requirements through being too small, or not being able to recruit the necessary volunteer stewards or cleaners. Hopefully, the main church in each deanery will be able to welcome visitors from elsewhere. j. Face coverings may be worn, but are not strictly necessary. Their use is voluntary and not disrespectful to prayer before the Blessed Sacrament or the sacred space which is the church. k. Parents and guardians bringing children to the church should be mindful to care for them particularly by ensuring they touch as few surfaces as possible for their own safety.

“I rejoiced when I heard them say “Let us go to God’s house, and now our feet are standing within your gates O Jerusalem”. (Psalm 121:1-2)

George Stack, Archbishop of Cardiff
