Tyler 6 Chairman's Foreword In the following pages the Director in his introduction and the Heads of Department in their respective reports describe in fair detail the work of the year. I have pleasure in presenting these reports which reflect great credit on the staff of the Council and on the hundreds of voluntary workers who in one way and another are actively associated with the work of the Council of Social Service. The review of the Council's activities to which the Director refers gave those of us on the Review Committee a much deeper insight into the work done and a quicker appreciation of achievement of the staff than is normally realised by Committee members of any organisation. It so happens that the resignation of the Assistant Director gives an opportunity to consider changes in the staff structure which we think will be of benefit to the Council's efficiency and standing in Wales. The Director pays his tribute to Mr. Ieuan Jones' work for the Council over a period of nearly ten years. The quick lively enthusiasm and easy sociability allied to his keen business sense and his assiduous efforts to raise money for the Council are qualities which have earned our gratitude and which fit him admirably for the responsibility of his new post in London as Chief Executive Officer of the London Welsh Trust to which he has gone with our cordial good wishes. PURPOSE OF REPORT This report describes the work of Glamorgan Archives for the period 1 March to 31 May 2014. 2. BACKGROUND As part of the agreed reporting process the Glamorgan Archivist updates the Joint Committee quarterly on the work and achievements of the service. 3. Members are asked to note the content of this report. 4. ISSUES A. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES 1. Staff: establishment Maintain appropriate levels of staff There has been no staff movement during the quarter. From April the Deputy Glamorgan Archivist reduced her hours to 30 a week. Review establishment The manager-led regrading process has been followed for four staff positions in which responsibilities have increased since the original evaluation was completed. The posts are Administrative Officer, Senior Records Officer, Records Assistant and Preservation Assistant. All were in detriment following the single status assessment and comprise 7 members of staff. Applications have been submitted and results are awaited. 1 Develop skill sharing programme During the quarter 44 volunteers and work experience placements have contributed 1917 hours to the work of the Office. Of these 19 came from Cardiff, nine each from the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend, four from Rhondda Cynon Taf and three from outside our area: from Newport, Haverfordwest and Catalonia. In addition nine tours have been provided to prospective volunteers and two references were supplied to former volunteers.

    Brief Histories of Churches in the Roath, Splott, Adamsdown, Cathays, Tremorfa, Tredegarville & Penylan areas of Cardiff Roath Local History Society in Cardiff has as its area of interest the old Parish of Roath in the 1880s. This covered not just the area we know as Roath today but also Splott, Adamsdown, Pengam, Pen-y-lan, and part of Cathays. This brief histories of churches looks at the churches that would have been in the area of old parish of Roath but also strays into neighbouring area such as Tredegarville and Cathays as a whole. There may be more churches to be included such as some mission halls that doubled up both as Sunday Schools as well as a church. A couple of synagogues are also included. Building of other faiths will be added over time, though some are already listed as former church buildings now house other faiths. Some errors and omissions in the details are likely. When the author is made aware of any errors, or additional information comes to light, the details on the website version will be updated where possible. The website also contains an interactive map that pinpoints the individual churches. Staff Maintain establishment Virtual tea breaks continue to be held to ensure good communication between staff who have returned to the office and those still working from home. Continue skill sharing and volunteer programme Throughout lockdown regular contact has been maintained with volunteers through weekly emails. Since staff have returned to the office this has been extended to include fortnightly catch ups via Zoom. Zoom video conferencing software was chosen over other available options as it was already being used by the volunteers involved. The annual volunteer feedback sessions have been held, a form being circulated to all volunteers with optional telephone call follow up if requested. The vast majority of responses were positive: I enjoy the atmosphere, the people, the project, and the unlimited coffee I feel valued as a volunteer...All the staff in the Archives are very friendly and helpful, and it is a pleasure to attend every week I have enjoyed all aspects of the project I enjoy the contact with the staff and fellow volunteers and keeping my mind active Can’t think of anything [to improve the placements].
