Trenton 68 58 2.5 L2 Reading 60 65 10.0 W1 Cessa struck out eight and scattered four hits over six innings of work for Trenton, but with one out and the bases loaded in the third inning, Cessa saw a would-be inning- Binghamton 60 66 10.5 L1 ending double-play grounder skip over the head of second baseman Gosuke Katoh, scoring the game’s first two runs. Drew Weeks followed with an RBI-groundout to first Hartford 57 66 12.0 W1 base for a 3-0 Yard Goats lead. Portland 54 70 15.5 W1 Phillip Diehl kept the game within reach for the Thunder by tossing two scoreless innings in relief, but Hartford added one run in the ninth on a Scott Burcham RBI-infield single off right-hander Chase Hodson. West Division W L GB Streak Akron 70 5 6 -- L1 The Thunder posed their first scoring threat in the third, when Jhalan Jackson and Danienger Perez put two runners on with one out. But a popout and a diving catch of a Altoona 68 55 0.5 W2 Wendell Rijo line drive by Hartford center fielder Omar Carrizales ended the threat. Jackson also reached third with one out in the eighth inning on a dropped fly ball by Carrizales, but was left stranded. Harrisburg 63 61 6.0 L3 Erie 60 66 10.0 W1 In the bottom of the ninth, Brandon Wagner lined a two-out single off Yard Goats reliever Matt Pierpont, but after Trey Amburgey followed with a walk, Jorge Saez struck Bowie 59 65 10.0 W2 out swinging to end the game. At times throughout the season, Riggleman has organized drills that focus on fundamentals from baserunning, to cutoff throws, covering bases and more. So it wasn't hard to see the disappointment Riggleman felt following a 7-4 Reds loss to the Tigers that completed Detroit's two- game series sweep. Numerous mistakes befuddled Cincinnati defensively and on the bases at Comerica Park. "When you play like that, you're not supposed to win," Riggleman said. "It's not bad effort, it's bad performance. We just have to somehow find a way to clean it up. It was very sloppy." Some of the mistakes included: • Left fielder Phillip Ervin twice missed the cutoff man on hits and it cost the Reds two runs. • A relay throw from shortstop Jose Peraza one-hopped over catcher Curt Casali's head for another run. • Casali ran into a double play during a four-run rally in the seventh inning. "That's the difference between a good club and a really good club," Casali said.

  • Tomlin Struggles, Tribe Falls in '16 WS Rematch by Jordan
Tomlin struggles, Tribe falls in '16 WS rematch By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian CLEVELAND -- The Indians have been down this road with Josh Tomlin in the past, but it does not make things any easier to handle in the moment. In a 10-3 loss to the Cubs on Tuesday night, Tomlin's history of being prone to home runs once again hindered Cleveland. The right-hander surrendered four homers, including two to Kyle Schwarber, in an abbreviated outing that dug an early hole and led to the end of the Tribe's modest three-game win streak. "There's a lot of trust with his desire and everything to be what he needs to be," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Tomlin. "He'll get after it. He'll figure it out. And he won't be alone." Over 3 2/3 innings, Tomlin was charged with five runs, which included solo home runs by Ian Happ and Willson Contreras in addition to Schwarber's shots. It marked the second time this season Tomlin yielded four home runs in an outing, having also done so on April 3 against the Angels. Complicating matters on Tuesday night was the Tribe lineup's inability to mount much against Cubs starter Tyler Chatwood. The Indians' only breakthrough against Chatwood came via a run-scoring groundout from Jason Kipnis in the third. Tomlin, who entered the night averaging 1.6 homers per nine innings in his career, has given up eight blasts in 12 2/3 innings this season.
