In a strange world with even stranger characters, she meets a grinning cat and a rabbit with a pocket-watch, joins a mad tea party and plays croquet with the Queen. Did you learn anything new, or have a different reaction to the story? Would you describe this as a story for children or adults? Why? There are many interpretations on this story (see links under Go Beyond the Book) - what are some of your favorite interpretations? Do you agree with any of these analyses? What do you think the author is trying to tell the reader? Discuss some of the themes and/or symbols in the story. How do they relate to the plot and characters? “Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of themselves.” This play on the proverb, “Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves,” is a good example of Carroll’s word play. Discuss other examples of Carroll’s word play.     University of Iceland School of Humanities Department of English Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Literary Nonsense A Deconstructive Analysis of Lewis Carroll’s Novel B. A. Essay Lara Ruiz Prados Kt.: 271184-4339 Supervisor: Anna Heiða Pálsdóttir January 2018 ABSTRACT This essay analyzes the main features of the nonsense genre, including its definition, characteristics and, especially, its relevance in the world of literature. Nonsense literature encourages the imagination of the reader, whether child or adult, and, at the same time, it motivates the use of the reader’s wisdom to make it even greater. It is not necessary to find out the intention of the writer while he or she was creating the book. The reader must interpret the text according to his own circumstances. Without any doubt, and according to Jacques Derrida (1930-2004), a critical reading must create a text because “there is nothing outside of the text.” Furthermore, the essay offers a deconstructive analysis of nonsense books by the well- known mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), who used to sign his novels with his pen name, Lewis Carroll. Particularly, the essay focuses its investigation on Carroll’s books about the unforgettable character of Alice, such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). Indeed, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has been one of the world’s most frequently translated works and, after Shakespeare, Carroll is possibly the world’s most quoted author. The famous books about Alice were not expressly written for children; it is needless to say that also adults enjoy Carroll’s unsolved logic problems.

    A Mad Tea-Party Alice came to a most curious tea-party around a large table with ten seats, with the Mad Hatter, Bill the Lizard, the Dormouse, the March Hare, and the Duchess. “No room! No room!” they cried when they saw Alice coming. Each took a seat, and abruptly stood and took another. They kept switching seats. “How is a raven like a writing-desk?” asked the Hatter. Alice thought for a moment. “I feel I will never know,” she said. The table on the next page indicates the totals of how many chairs each party-goer sat in and how many party-goers sat in each chair. Use the statements below to fill in an X for each incorrect square and a O for each correct square. 1. Bill the Lizard sat in the three chairs closest to the western edge of the table (as well as others). 2. Alice and Bill the Lizard never sat in the same seat. 3. Alice only sat in chairs with flowers on them. 4. The Duchess never sat in a chair next to one she had sat in before. 5. The Mad Hatter sat in exactly the same seats as the Duchess, except for the striped armchair. 6. Bill the Lizard and the March Hare both sat in the bergère. 7. The Dormouse sat in each chair without armrests, except the high chair. 8. The Dormouse and Alice each sat in the same two adjacent seats. 9. The March Hare sat in all the same seats as Bill the Lizard except one.
