Scott seems to use these women as metaphors for the British colonial experience: each in her own way demonstrates a unique facet of the raj. Even more so than the male administrators (whom one would have thought were pivotal to this particular experience), the women dominate the novels. Each embodies an aspect of the problems arising from within the colonial experience that is not resolved by the battling male population. iii Acknowledgements I gratefully acknowledge the encouragement and support offered by my supervisor, Dr. Maqbool Aziz. He has Assistant Professor of English Government First Grade constructed each novel with much thought and care as revelations of human behaviour. The Raj Women’s College, Bidar, Quartet is one of his most enduring works. It is a tetralogy comprising of the four novels, The Jewel karnatka, India in the Crown (1964), The Day of the Scorpion (1968), The Towers of Silence (1971) and The Division of the Spoils (1975). Taken as a whole, The Quartet gives us a panoramic view of India from the Quit India Movement to Partition and Independence..Times and places are clearly charted. Readers travel from „The Mac Gregor house‟ via „The Bibighar Gardens‟, „The Moghul Room‟, and „The Dak Bungalow‟ to the „Circuit House‟. Paul Scott brings each of these places to life with his detailed descriptions - both of their historical past and their tumultuous present. The Body’s Grace By Rowan Williams To ask, "Why does sex matter?" sounds a rather futile way of beginning an address in these circumstances. It's rather obvious that it does matter, and that it matters in different ways to different people. To some it matters as a cause for alarm, to others as a cause for celebration: there would be less need for LGCM and kindred organisations if sex were not alarming to so many, and less impetus to join or support LGCM, if sex were not something a little more than another good cause. Most people know that sexual intimacy is in some ways frightening for them; most know that it is quite simply the place where they begin to be taught whatever maturity they have. Most of us know that the whole business is irredeemably comic, surrounded by so many odd chances and so many opportunities for making a fool of yourself; plenty know that it is the place where they are liable to be most profoundly damaged or helpless. Culture in general and religion in particular have devoted enormous energy to the doomed task of getting it right. In this address, I want to try and understand a little better why the task is doomed, and why the fact that it's doomed, is a key to seeing more fully why and how it matters - and even seeing more fully what this mattering has to do with God. And to conduct this exploration in this context may turn out to have a particular "rightness" about it, as I hope may be clearer by the time I've finished. -

Scott saw that this was the case in colonial India where the English, in their myopia, con stantly repeated their mistakes over centuries and so alien ated the Indian population. However, these same English) in their insularity, also alienated those people from their own country who did not meet the standards of their self imposed mores, those who were not quite pukka. More than in any other modern novels Paul Scott explores in his quintet of novels, The Jewel in the Crown, The Day of the Scorpion, The Towers of Silence, A Division of the Spoils, . and Staying On, this theme of alienation and its tragic results. As none of the characters is more alienated or tragic than Ronald Merrick, I examine in the following pages how and why this happens to him historically, socially and psycho logically. -

The books in the tetralogy series outline the final years of the British occupation of India from manifold viewpoints and address moral conflicts of British army officers in the East. The Raj Quartet is a long, leisurely, high- detailed set of novels. Paul Scott’s monumental opus is inevitably complex and potentially confusing. Its central action spans a period of five years and is set in an area which went on to become five nations. It consists of more than 300 named characters, including 24 principal characters. The Raj Quartet comprises four volumes, four masterpieces about the fall of the British Empire in India. It is undoubtedly one of the great works of English literature of the last century. It is an engrossing tale where history engulfs loves, lives, hopes, past and present, and it builds, too - something new, despite the forces which try to stop it. It's beautiful and poignant, wonderfully written, and despite its length, it's a compulsively enjoyable novel to read. BELONGING AND NOT BELONGING: Understanding India in novels by Paul Scott, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and V S Naipaul by JANET MARIANA PUGH Submitted for the Degree of PhD University of London Queen Mary and Westfield College July 1993 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is essentially about the "how" and "why" of the Indian experience as documented in novels by Paul Scott, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and V S Naipaul. The study points to the difficulty of arriving at any conclusive definition of the country and its people. I show that differences in attitudes, responses or behaviour are both overt and subtle, and depend upon whether the writer or the character identifies with the situation or community with which he or she interacts. It is the individual's sense of belonging or not belonging to his or her own group - be this along racial, cultural or gender lines - that accounts for the differing perspectives evident in these novels. The points- of-view of the outsider and the insider can therefore be seen as mutual comments upon the other. Since the struggle between belonging and not belonging becomes acute when the old meets the new, focus is centred on communities experiencing change. These include the British in India, West-Indian Indians and westernised Indians. Despite their differences, all three communities share similar reasons for either an acceptance or rejection of the 'Other'. The thesis argues that the need for emotional stability compels allegiance to the traditional group, while the desire for individuality encourages surrender to the new. The former nurtures a sense of belonging while, it is argued, that the latter is perceived as the hallmark of those who do not belong. -

It's beautiful and poignant, wonderfully written, and despite its length, it's a compulsively enjoyable novel to read. Paul Scott manages to extract the full potential from the freedom of the novel form. He made use of every opportunity to develop a thought or idea realized to its limits. Scott uses both overt and covert symbolism to embroider the structural framework and to exploit the narrative potential of the incidents he describes. © 2018 JETIR April 2018, Volume 5, Issue 4 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TITLES IN THE RAJ QUARTET Dr Vidya Patil Assistant Professor, Department of English, Government First Grade Women‘s College, Bidar Abstract :- Scott stated that “For me, the British Raj is an extended metaphor [and] I don’t think a writer chooses his metaphors. They choose him.” In the Raj Quartet the metaphor of the Raj is extended into images, symbols and metaphors in the four volumes. Scott renders the history of the Raj in terms of the stories of the symbolic characters and events. These metaphors stand for various stages in the life of individuals as also of the raj – thwarted love, imprisonment, madness and death and funeral. The events that befall the individual characters have a parallelism in the events of the Raj. There is perfect amalgamation of history and story in The Quartet. Scott’s method is to elaborate historic ideas in terms of symbols and metaphors. Scott has executed his magnificent conception of the novel as an “extended metaphor” for communicating his view of life.
