Our Local Is Growing, and Has Been Doing So Steadily for the Past Few Years
ANIMATION GUILD AND AFFILIATED ELECTRONIC AND GRAPHIC ARTS Los Angeles, California, September 2020 Vol. 49, No9 Our Local is growing, and has been doing so steadily for the past few years. We’ve got almost 6000 active, dues paying members on the books right now, and the majority are busier than ever as the animation sector does the heavy lifting in an entertainment industry that has been devastated by a global pandemic. But it’s not easy to keep in touch while we’re all working from home. When we don’t see each other at the studios, we miss out on casual chats in the break area and quick greetings in the halls. We forget that we’re not the only ones struggling to keep a normal schedule when there are emails coming in at all hours and kids that need attention whether we’re busy at work or not. And because we’re apart, the community feeling we experience when we’re working together seems very far away. That makes it more important than ever for all of us to fi nd new ways to stay in touch and keep our Animation Guild community strong and connected. This Is a Negotiation Year. That Means the Animation
ANIMATION GUILD AND AFFILIATED ELECTRONIC AND GRAPHIC ARTS Los Angeles, California, February 2021 Vol. 50, No2 This is a negotiation year. That means the Animation Guild’s term agree- ments with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) and some individual animation studios are set to expire in 2021 and we’ll need to meet with those employers to negotiate new agreements. Others in our parent union, the IATSE, are in the same situation; the live-action West Coast Studio Locals will be facing the AMPTP in the coming months to bargain for individual contracts and for a Basic Agreement that will likely form the core of our own wage and benefi ts package. Local 839 generally bargains with the AMPTP after the West Coast Studio Locals conclude their negotiations. While we usually meet before our contract term expires, our most recent negotiations for a Master Agreement (in 2018) were pushed back several months because some diffi cult bargaining issues caused delays in the Basic Agreement talks; in that case our Local agreed to a contract extension with the AMPTP that was meant to carry us through the weeks until both sides came to an agreement on new contract terms. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Translation is always associated with language and is also closely related to the culture of two or more countries. Newmark (1988) defines culture as the way of life and its manifestations that has differences in terms of behavior, habits, customs used in a particular language as its means of expressions. One of the differences are reflected in the language and its translation and will be discussed in this study. According to Nida and Taber (1974, p.12) in Hasan (2008) translating means diverting messages contained in the source language (SL) into the target language (TL) so that the people who read (or hear) the messages in source language (SL) feels like the person reading the translation in the target language (TL). The writer wants to analyse the subtitle of the new movie of Scooby-Doo which title Scooby-Doo Return To Zombie Island.
