It was like reading a fanfic written by the author, which has the promise to be fun I don't mind alternate universesbut ultimately I just felt disappointed. It was as if Watsuki-san took advantage of the fact that most readers would already know the characters, and rushed through their introductions, and the reasons why they bonded together as a group. I feel badly for anyone picking this up as their first introdu As a passionate fan of the original manga, it was strange reading Restoration. I feel badly for anyone picking this up as their first introduction to Rurouni Kenshin. The slower pace that he uses to build characters and their relationships in the original manga makes for such a rich reading experience, and continues to set it apart for me within the genre. La exposición contará, además de un espacio dedicado a los animes sobre samuráis, con páginas originales e ilustraciones de Hiroshi Hirata, considerado como uno de los mangakas que mejor y con mayor rigor ha reflejado la vida de los samuráis. Caldwell, Chair Japanese creative media – particularly, its comics, animation, and video games – has found success globally, but it is primarily a product made for and by a domestic audience. What characterizes the success of its various creative industries on the domestic level, before they reach out to global spheres? This dissertation attempts to provide an answer to this question by examining the logics of franchise media production in Japan. I conduct ethnographic fieldwork into Japan’s manga and anime industries, as well as close analyses of concomitant transmedia texts, in order to demonstrate the collective authorship that surrounds the production of contemporary media in these industries today. La Yuki Onna es un cuento tradicional japonés, un fantasma, un youkai, como se le dice en la lengua japonesa. Es una aparición femenina que se cree, ataca y rapta viajeros en las tormentas de nieve. Se la retrata como una bellísima mujer de piel muy blanca y ojos celestes, sin pies (particularidad de las apariciones japonesas) cuyo aliento es capaz de congelar a la gente. Hay diferentes versiones de ella, tantas como pueblos haya en el centro y norte de Japón. Este mito tal vez se haya originado por el miedo de los campesinos a atravesar tormentas de nieve, mortales en la mayoría de los casos, otros adjudican que la yuki onna es un espíritu de una mujer fallecida en una tormenta de nieve, por lo tanto, el origen del mito es multicausal y cada región tiene una versión particular de este personaje.1 Se la retrata como una prostituta (yukijorou) como una niña (yuki-musume) como una anciana (yuki-omba o Yuki-baba). Su cantidad de nombres, cantidad de interpretaciones y cantidad de leyendas nos hablan de un cuento folklórico bien conocido en Japón. In September 2017, fans of the samurai manga Rurouni Kenshin were excited to see manga-ka Nobuhiro Watsuki, who also wrote Buso Renkin and Embalming -The Another Tale of Frankenstein- , return to his original success story with The Hokkaido Arc . Three months later, publication of the series was suspended. When The Hokkaido Arc resumed publication in June 2018, many of those same fans were disgusted that the series was continuing. What happened within that time that changed everyone's mind? In November 2017, Watsuki was arrested on charges of possession of child pornography DVDs. He pleaded guilty and confessed to being a pedophile attracted to girls in elementary and middle school. Such a heinous crime somehow resulted in hardly any consequences. His legal punishment was a fine of only 200,000 yen, equivalent to $1,780. Watsuki was suspended for only half a year before he was back to work at Shueisha, the publishing company behind the Shonen Jump line of magazines, and writing The Hokkaido Arc as usual. That he got off so lightly for a crime that involved the exploitation and abuse of real children when the Japanese legal system punishes nonviolent drug crimes much more severely sparked outrage. Shueisha, however, has gone about business as usual publishing and promoting Kenshin as if none of this ever happened.
