Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Rurouni Kenshin Vol. 4 #10-12 by Nobuhiro Watsuki Rurouni Kenshin: Why Creator Nobuhiro Watsuki is Controversial. Fans went from hyped for the return of Rurouni Kenshin to disgusted by it. What happened within that time that changed everyone's mind? WARNING: The following contains sensitive content, including discussion of pedophilia. In September 2017, fans of the samurai manga Rurouni Kenshin were excited to see manga-ka Nobuhiro Watsuki, who also wrote Buso Renkin and Embalming -The Another Tale of Frankenstein- , return to his original success story with The Hokkaido Arc . Three months later, publication of the series was suspended. When The Hokkaido Arc resumed publication in June 2018, many of those same fans were disgusted that the series was continuing. What happened within that time that changed everyone's mind? In November 2017, Watsuki was arrested on charges of possession of child pornography DVDs. He pleaded guilty and confessed to being a pedophile attracted to girls in elementary and middle school. Such a heinous crime somehow resulted in hardly any consequences. His legal punishment was a fine of only 200,000 yen, equivalent to $1,780. Watsuki was suspended for only half a year before he was back to work at Shueisha, the publishing company behind the Shonen Jump line of magazines, and writing The Hokkaido Arc as usual. That he got off so lightly for a crime that involved the exploitation and abuse of real children when the Japanese legal system punishes nonviolent drug crimes much more severely sparked outrage. Shueisha, however, has gone about business as usual publishing and promoting Kenshin as if none of this ever happened. Jump Square 's editorial department claimed, "The author spends his days reflecting and with remorse, and think as though it’s our obligation as a publisher as well as his as an author make a way for us to reply through the work to the various opinions we’ve been getting." Kenshin and Shishio were playable in the Jump Force video game, two more live-action Rurouni Kenshin were announced, and Kenshin continues to be heavily merchandised and promoted throughout Japan. Viz Media, the American publisher of Shonen Jump , has split the difference between keeping Kenshin around and canceling it entirely. The original manga series is still in print and available through the Shonen Jump website and app. However, Viz ceased translating The Hokkaido Arc following Watsuki's arrest, and decided not to continue translating when the series resumed in Japan. If you were judging Watsuki by his work, he'd probably be the last manga-ka you'd suspect of such a crime. Rurouni Kenshin was a deeply moral series about atoning for one's sins and didn't contain even a hint of the inappropriate sexuality that's common in many otherwise-respected manga. Making the situation even more uncomfortable is that Watsuki was a mentor figure at Shonen Jump due to Kenshin 's success, and it seems he's maintained that standing even in light of his crimes. One Piece 's Eiichiro Oda and Shaman King 's Hiroyuki Takei were two of the most famous artists trained by Watsuki, and they still seem to consider him a friend. Oda even interviewed Watsuki this year for a planned Rurouni Kenshin exhibition in Japan. On some level, Shueisha's desire to keep Rurouni Kenshin in the public eye is understandable, as it's a series that meant a lot to many people. That meaning, however, has been poisoned by its creator's actions. If you can reread your old manga volumes and separate the art from the artist enough to still enjoy them, more power to you. However, you might not want to continue spending money on the series, knowing the sorts of materials Watsuki has spent his money on. Nobuhiro Watsuki (和月 伸宏, Watsuki Nobuhiro ), a manga-ka and video game character designer, is the creator of Rurouni Kenshin. Manga Works. Teacher Pon was written by Watsuki during high school, and earned the Tezuka award. Hokuriku Yūrei Kobanashi earned the Hop Step award. Crescent Moon in the Warring States was Watsuki's first professional work. Set in the Sengoku Jidai era of the warring states, it relates the tale of a former lone Hiten-Mitsurugi swordsman Hiko Seijūrō. It is collected in the sixth Rurouni Kenshin tankōbon volume. Rurouni: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story is the name of two one-shots that preceded Rurouni Kenshin's launch in Weekly Shōnen Jump. They are collected in the first and third Rurouni Kenshi. Watsuki's depiction of himself (right) and Kenshin. Watsuki created Meteor Strike while in the middle of writing Rurouni Kenshin . Watsuki felt disgusted with the work and originally did not plan on revealing it, but he ultimately decided to include Meteor Strike to increase the page count of the volume. Watsuki said that after reading the story over it "relaxed" him "in a nice way." Watsuki said that the work has "some different flavors" than Rurouni Kenshin . Watsuki included three main elements in the story. He had wanted to use meteors in a story since they are the "most energetic natural phenomena." His second element was a boy wearing a pair of white gloves. Watsuki described white gloves as "sort of plain" and "not cool at all," yet he considers the element to be one of his favorites since the gloves "give off a sense of strength." His third element is the girl wearing a construction site helmet. The helmet is masculine, while the Japanese school uniform that the girl wears is feminine. Watsuki said that he created Shinya, the main character, "on the spot." Watsuki believed that he created Shinya to have too much honesty, and that Shinya's personality overlaps the personality of Himura Kenshin, the main character of Rurouni Kenshin ; he said that he regretted the overlap "a little." Watsuki created Chiho, the other major character, to show the "shojo theme of the moment" where the boy's maturity becomes larger than the girl's maturity. Watsuki felt that the plan "didn't work out so well" and "a lot isn't what I wanted it to be." He added that he liked portraying the "helpful nature" of Chiho. Criminal Charges. In November 2017, police found DVDs with footage of naked girls in their early teens in Watsuki's Tokyo office. The Tokyo Police then raided Watsuki's home as part of an investigation into the purchase of child pornography. The search uncovered DVDs containing videos of naked girls less than 18 years of age. Watsuki was referred to prosecutors over possession of child pornography on November 21, 2017. [23] [24] The serialization of Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaidō Arc was put on hiatus after the details of Watsuki's charges were made public. [25] [26] In February 2018, Watsuki was fined ¥200,000. [27] The Hokkaidō Arc resumed serialization in June of 2018. [28] [29] Rurouni Kenshin (VIZBIG Edition), Vol. 4.
