Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun donates $51,395 to LEF’s Backpack Coalition

The Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun (BBFL) recently donated $51,395 to the Loudoun Education Foundation (LEF)–Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) Backpack Coalition, filling an enormous need for our food insecure students. There are 2,787 students in 88 schools receiving supplemental weekend food. The LEF/LCPS Backpack Coalition Program fills the gap for 27 of those schools, serving 1,201 students. BBFL’s continued support to the LEF- LCPS Backpack Coalition exemplifies its commitment to identifying and alleviating the challenge of ensuring all of our children have food available, both in and out of school.

Pictured here is LCPS Superintendent Dr. Eric Williams and Supervisor of Outreach Services Grant Schafer accepting the donation from Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun (BBFL) President and Founder Daniel Hampton; BBFL Vice President Fred Williams; BBFL Secretary Susan Murphy; and BBFL Marketing Director Eva Smith; also included are LEF-LCPS Backpack Coalition Program Coordinator Kelly Miller; LEF Director of Development Samantha Courtney; LEF Treasurer Wesley Clark; and LCPS Director of Student Services Dr. Clark Bowers.

Community Rotaries Join Local Businesses and Residents to Deliver 650 Backpacks with School Supplies to Loudoun Students

Thanks to the hard work of many individuals, businesses and non-profits, 650 at-risk Loudoun County children are each going to school with a new backpack full of school supplies. The effort included: Ashburn Rotary and six other Rotaries which supplied technical assistance and manpower; two school systems (FCPS & LCPS who provided logistical support); non-profits including Brite Paths & Firefighters and Friends who provided support and volunteers to pack and move the school supplies; Loudoun County Firefighters & Fairfax County Firefighters; and our corporate partners Giant Food, Costco, My Guys Movers of Sterling, VA. Giant Food collected approximately $23K of supplies spear headed by My Pham, a Giant Food employee who is also a member of the Ashburn Rotary Club. The 650 backpacks full of school supplies are valued at $21,925. The entire effort was spearheaded by Susan Mullen, President of the Sterling Rotary Club. Pictured here is the team of volunteers, having completed the hard work of stocking each backpack and preparing for delivery to the LCPS Parent Liaisons.

Comments: It is heartwarming to reflect on the efforts of individuals and organizations that have identified and are working to fulfill needs experienced by so many of our Loudoun students. I often hear that we live in the wealthiest county in the nation: however, this does not mean that all of our residents are enjoying a lifestyle reflective of such a status. Our School Board continues to strive

7

to provide the most professional educational support and services, which often integrates with County staff and the community efforts to provide sustenance and socio-emotional support.

While overcrowding has dissipated with the opening of Goshen Post, Willard, and the Academies of Loudoun Dulles Schools continue to be the most overcrowded in the Division. To keep up with this, we are opening a Dulles North/Broad Run elementary school and a Dulles North high school (Independence) next year, and have several more on the planning table. To start planning their use, we will be working new elementary school boundaries this fall (Dulles North Schools), and new joint middle/high school (Dulles South Schools). Boundary changes for Independence High school are already in place, and they match the boundaries for (and students will matriculate from) Brambleton Middle School.

As always, please contact me with your ideas, concerns, or questions. A hyperlink to my email is available on the front page of each school that serves the , and is also in the “To” line of this email. Sincerely,
