25 Years Ago Appleton, WI, Parade promo was underway. Hans Pfaff was pictured at our photo contest event. The edition was notewor- thy for its lack of content but with new editors, the new direc- tion of UCR was beginning to unfold.

20 Years Ago Hans Pfaff makes the cover, along with racers, including Scott Goodyear and Richard Spenard. Parade promo was for Grand Traverse, MI, where the red cabrio now owned by Renate Weidner, was introduced to PCA via the Parade Con- cours d’Elegance. Mosport DE was $125 for the weekend. Tire Tech, the precursor to Shift Into Spring, was in the works. Membership was approaching 500. Jack Christies was our speaker at the Le Papillon monthly Social. The Patemans hosted their annual 914er event.

15 Years Ago Photo radar was the rant of the day by editor David Gaunt with a feature by Owen Sela. President Gord McNeil advised that Terry Cleland would bring Bill Oursler to the March Social. We were moving ahead with plans for UCR management and sup- port of Parade events at Lake Placid. James Drozdiak wrote about his rookie season on track. Ben Ciantar wrote a fea- ture about Hans Gramlich’s on-car break rotor grinder. Marcus Koch told us about the new 993 intro in Spain. One Chinese Auction item was the popular “Three Babes and a Rake”. Char- ity Auction target was $10k. Our March wine tasting event was to be chaired by Bill & Hella Comat. Bruce Farrow talked about winterizing your Porsche.

10 Years Ago President Van Atter was promoting the Sweetheart Charity Auction. The Parade ’99 Goodie Store was soliciting local area vendors. Luckily (for Mont Tremblant Parade), Cray Scarlett and Andy Hunt came through. Helmut Brosz promoted a Spring Blossom Tour around Prince Edward County. Helmut, it’s time to do it again.

We had such an phenomenal time last year, we are taking our Spring Tour back to the historic and acclaimed Benmiller Inn. The Inn is a haven of charm, natural beauty and authentic country inn hospitality. In a sheltered, wooded valley on the banks of Sharpe's Creek lies a nineteenth-century hamlet untouched by time. Into this tranquil scene, Benmiller Inn & Spa introduces only the very best of the modern age - such delights as distinctive regional cuisines and an elegant spa.

Nestled in the idyllic rolling hills just one hour north of London and two hours from Toronto, The Benmiller Inn and Spa offers gourmet regional cuisine, an array of luxurious amenities, and elegant accommodations, with the sound of Sharpe’s Creek rushing by and a resplendent view of its shoreline in full bloom from many guest rooms.

We have an itinerary packed full of fun including breakfast Saturday and Sunday and fine dining Saturday evening (including Murder Mystery).

On Saturday morning we’ll show off our freshly polished ‘P’ cars at a concours event at 11:00 am at the Inn, before heading for our tour of the beautiful farmland and lakeview landscape. Our tour will be organized by our local members this year, so we are excited about seeing some new sites. When we return to the Inn, you’ll have time for a hike, spa treatment, swim or even siesta!

The last couple of years have been a blast at the spring tour. It’s a great way to meet fellow ‘P’ lovers from around the province… so please join us. The registration information can be found below.

INTO SPRING Submitted by: Jeffrey Wagman - Chair

Once again as the year turns, we see spring on the horizon, and the sight of shiny Porsches starting to wake-up from winter hibernation (for those who don’t drive in the white stuff). As it is soon approach- ing, I am making arrangements to have another exciting event this year, known as Shift Into Spring.

This year, I have been working with Pfaff Porsche to create an invit- ing atmosphere to all who come.

As I did last year, I will attempt to get as many “special” Porsche cars as I can for display.

The Used Porsche Corral will, as always, be available to our mem- bers at $20.00 per space. Don’t forget to put vehicle and contact information on the windshield.

Mark your calendar now for Sunday April 26th, 2009. This is the “kick-off” to the driving season! Photos of the 2008 Shift Into Spring Event by Graham Jardine, UCR Treasurer Photos of the 2008 Shift Into Spring Event by Graham Jardine, Details will follow via the Website.

I have had fabulous assistance in the past from members. I would appreciate it if there is anyone who would like to assist me on the DAYOFTHEEVENT

T he Journal of Upper Canada Region 19 Downtown Porsche, our one and only Premier Porsche dealer in The resourcefulness of the Porsche individualization program was Canada, (represented at the event by Angie Gray), plus all other also demonstrated on a midnight blue Carrera 4S. Canadian Porsche dealerships, invited a small number of friends and clients to a spectacular event held at Niagara on the Lake, With participants split into four groups, we drove the new cars Oct 15-16. and experienced their special features i.e., PDK and Sports Mode Plus (launch control). All PDK models have paddle-shifters and Registration at the Pillar and Post Hotel (Porsche goodie bag with seven gears. literature, a coffee mug from co-sponsor Continental Tires and an elegant keepsake and pin) was followed by an exquisite dinner at Stratos Winery. Key members of the Porsche Canada team were introduced and the EXPLORE THE CORE program and agenda were explained. A white Carrera coupe and a ruby red Carrera 4S cabriolet were strategically placed on the terrace.

The next day, after a hearty breakfast, the group made its way to the Niagara on the Lake airfield to be introduced to the instructors (all former racers) and other key people. The program included four driving and one “showroom” session where we learned how the PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) functions (using a moving parts model) and how the new direct fuel injection works. Close scrutiny of the Carrera 4S cabriolet allowed us to see subtle changes and the new touch screen communication unit.

Exercises included using the launch control feature, fast accel- eration and hard braking, autocross and steady 60 km "smooth" driving. As a special treat, the instructors drove us for two laps of the autocross at their top ability and, at the end of the day, took us out for two hot laps where the length of the runway allowed top speeds of 250 km.

What a day, what organization, what an experience. Now it's off to see the bank manager...

Congratulations, and a BIG THANK YOU to all.

20 FEATURE DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND OF THE PORSCHE PDK Text and Images, courtesy of Porsche AG Press Archives

Cutaway model of a Porsche twin-clutch gearbox Twin-clutch gearbox (PDK) The twin-clutch gearbox belongs to the load switching gearboxes, i.e. the driver does not need to take the foot off the accelerator when shifting gear. This in turn serves to avoid handling changes during shifting ma- noeuvres when cornering or on wet roads. Compared with similar load switching fully automatic gearboxes it also offers a decisive advantage in that there are no shifting interrup- tions. This favours a sporting driving style through better ac- celeration. The twin-clutch gearbox contained two separate Instructor Cass Whitehead clutches for alternate application of the two gearbox groups. One of the clutches transmitted the torque to the odd-num- bered (1., 3. and 5.) gears, the other to the even-numbered gears (2. and 4.). The PDK gearbox contained a two-piece gearbox input shaft. Mounted on the gearbox input shafts were the fixed gears, on the output shaft the idler gears, which were switched by way of a locking synchronization.

The gearbox group located at the rear of the gearbox housing was connected by means of a long shaft with clutch 1, the unit located at the front was connected to clutch 2 by a co- axial horizontal tubular shaft. When shifting, the power flow is transmitted from the one to the other clutch. In principle, two gears could be engaged at the same time: the current driving gear and the pre-selected desired gear. Switchover was done by the simultaneous, hydraulically actuated opening of the first and the closing of the second clutch. The actual gear change occurred along with the clutch change. Turbocharged engines benefited the most from the twin-clutch gearbox (PDK), because there were no more shifting interruptions with Participants Rick Bye, Peter Balzer and Rudi Hafen loss of charge-air pressure and thus turbocharger lag could be avoided. The PDK gearbox was used for the first time in 1984 at a race event in Imola.

Following further test events in 1985 it was able to chalk up its first victory in 1986 at the sprint race over 360 km in Monza. With a view to the commitment in the CART series a decision was taken in 1987 to cease with the PDK project and to push development of the Tiptronic gearbox instead.

It seems like every automaker with a claim to high perfor- mance and high technology has an automated-manual trans- mission today. was the first, with the CambioCorsa, followed by BMW's SMG, and then Volkswagen Group's DSG. Mitsubishi has its TC-SST. What took Porsche so long to develop the PDK?

The real question is "what took everybody else so long?" The Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe name dates from 1983, when the first experimental version was developed and used in a 956 series-produced endurance race car. A 956 with the experimental gearbox won a German national champi- onship race, and a couple of years later a 962, the 956's descendant, equipped with the gearbox won an international championship race at Monza, in Italy.

So, why didn't the PDK appear in street Porsches by the late 1980s? Given the state of the electronic technology then, it would have been prohibitively expensive and likely none too civilized. The early automated-manual gearboxes that appeared in road cars a decade or more after that were none too civilized either and had the benefit of much more development in control technology.

Porsche is, in many ways, conservative and is not given to jumping on the latest bandwagon. When the time was right, and the PDK was fully developed and refined enough to operate as smoothly and gently as the torque converter- based Tiptronic it replaces in the 911, it was made public. No apologies necessary – in automatic mode, the PDK is difficult if not impossible to distinguish from a Tiptronic. In manual mode(s), it can shift much more quickly – even faster than the standard manual gearbox.

How does it work? The PDK is essentially two gearboxes in one, each with its own clutch. They work alternately and sequentially, with the next gear in sequence engaged when the first is selected. Computer control prevents downshifts that would result in engine damage and, if decreases quickly enough, gears can be skipped. Gears are the same standard type as found in a normal manual gearbox, not the planetary gears of a torque converter automatic. Fur- ther sensor input and computer control prevents shifting at inopportune times, such as during hard cornering. The motorcycle-type wet clutches and the gear sets have sepa- rate lubrication systems, as each needs a different type of lubricating oil.

How well does it work? Very. In automatic mode, it not only is imperceptibly different from a conventional automatic in action, it learns the driver's needs well enough that manual mode is not necessarily better, even when driving with a more-than-moderate degree of enthusiasm. Manually, it shifts much more quickly than the standard six-speed stick, even in its most gentle mode. Unlike many current auto- mated-manual cars, the shift paddles follow the convention of Porsche's previous Tiptronic automatic and don't emu- late racecar applications, with separate up- and down-shift paddles. That may be a little confusing at first, but use is quickly adapted to. The PDK offers the Porsche 911 owner the best of both worlds.
