And that is not only because it was not understood but because it was stigmatised by religion and mainstream heterosexual society. Even today, the term “sodomy” and “catamites” are used in many legal documents and discourses in the USA and these were derived from Biblical texts. The first stirrings of movement on a rational basis to describe same-sex relations started in Europe a little before the region plunged into what are called World War I and World War II. Both were really wars fought by European Nation States and drew in both resources and knowledge from the colonies. Thus Edward Carpenter in England, Magnus Hirschfield in Germany, Havelock Ellis is Austria, all tried their hand at “naming” this phenomenon which was ancient in that they find mention in all human societies across the globe obviously making it a cross=species sexual behaviour. However, as the Upanishads say: “Defining reality or verbalising it – the’Vakas it is called in Sanskrit, took a very long time in secular sciences. -

Shoumitro Chatterjee, Arvind Subramanian*1 Ashoka Centre for Economic Policy Policy Paper No. 1 October, 2020 ABSTRACT India is turning inward. Domestic demand is assuming primacy over export-orientation and trade restrictions are increasing, reversing a 3-decade trend. This shift is based on three misconceptions, which we dispel: that India’s domestic market size is big, India’s growth has been based on domestic not export markets, and export prospects are dim because the world is deglobalizing. In fact, India still enjoys large export opportunities, especially in labour-intensive sectors such as clothing and footwear. But exploiting these opportunities requires more openness and more global integration. Abandoning export orientation is thus akin to killing the goose that lays golden eggs. Started in 2016, Ingenium offers students the opportunity to showcase their technical skills and innovative bent of mind. It is a platform to test their calibre while maintaining a healthy and competitive spirit. Ingenium inculcates the core university values of Project Based Learning and Multidisciplinary approaches to real life problems. This year Ingenium promoted its events and sponsors in 58 leading technological institutes of India, receiving zealous participation from over 4800 students. Ingenium was organised during 15th-17th March 2019 with its precursor workshops commencing from January 2nd. The fest was conducted at the GICT Building, Central Campus, Ahmedabad University. Event-wise Participation Ingenium comprised of 26 technical and 3 non-technical events, receiving around 5500 registrations, 4870 attendees, with a unique footfall of 3600. After receiving her VWO diploma at the Bonhoeffer College van der Waalslaan in Enschede, she started her study Technical Medicine at the University of Twente in 2005. After obtaining her bachelor degree in 2008, she continued with her masters. During this master she followed four clinical research internships in which both research and clinical activities were the focus. She started at the Dutch Burn Centre in Beverwijk, after which she moved to Utrecht for the second and third internship at the department of trauma surgery and the department of orthopedics in the University Medical Center. During her internship at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in Amsterdam she became acquainted with screening chemotherapy on mesothelioma cells. For her master thesis project she stayed at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek – Netherlands Cancer Institute and worked for one year on the development of short term primary tumor cultures of mesothelioma cells for screening and development of new therapeutic compounds. At the end of 2012 she obtained her master degree in Technical Medicine and started as a PhD student in the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek - Netherlands Cancer Institute. In the group of Prof. Dr Jacques Neefjes and later Prof. Dr. Zwart, but always in close collaboration with the thoracic oncology group of Prof. -

Plasticity, in contrast indicates the environmental sensitivity of a trait. Stabilizing selection is thought to increase canalization of a trait, whereas directional selection is often thought to lead to decanalization. However, the relationship between selection, canalization and plasticity remains largely unclear. Experimental evolution is a powerful approach for addressing fundamental questions in evolution. Here, we ask whether long-term directional selection for reduced pre-adult development time in Drosophila melanogaster results in the evolution of increased canalization for development time, the trait under primary selection. -
