The boys played at Bulleen Park on Sunday against a well established Bulleen/Templestowe outfit. We had played this team twice before and were aware of what this team had to offer. The warm up was great, the boys were in tune and ready to hit the turf! We started kicking with the wind. A slight breeze of about 100kph and pushing trees into a limbo position. The boys locked it down our end and kick a couple of handy first qtr goals. The second qtr we had Mother Nature against us. This clearly didn’t deter the boys as we locked it into our half of the ground and pressured there players into making easy mistakes and making good of the chances. 3rd qtr was much the same as the first, a lot of possession, a lot of great ball skills and great target kicking, allowing for wind and player movement. The young sharks moved the ball using forward thinking and not just blazing away with silly kicks that can easily be turned over. In the forth qtr the opposition were starting to get niggly, pushing and shoving and teasing as young boys do. Our Sharks, rather than biting the head off the prey, manned up and simply walked away from silly behaviour. If their teammates were getting pushed around they stuck up for each other and stood strong. It was great to see the boys show maturity and sense in the matter. We finished our game strongly and smartly. Using vital possessions to move the ball forward against the breeze and run rather than kick which proved successful. Well done to all the boys and the volunteers for there efforts on the day.

James Cahill – Played well, Tackled and chased really well. Took a nice mark in the goal square for a nice shot on goal and on the McDonalds award. Finn Arbuthnot – Terrific game by Finn. Finn laid around 100 hundred tackles, well that’s what it looked like to me. He chased hard all day and made lots of long kicks to his Team mates. This week U8 Black played away at Warrandyte. We arrived at the ground excited to find out that we would be playing a game on a whole oval and we were provided with an umpire from Lucas Zylan – We missed Lucas this week as he was unable to play. I reckon he would have the league which was very exciting, almost like playing under 9’s. This week the Team was lead by Archie. He played a great Captains game, setting the tone early with some brave marking in the forward line and some excellent work in the midfield. Archie competed hard all day with lots of second efforts which was great to watch. Some special mentions this week: Ethan Genever – Despite some niggling injuries, Ethan fought on today. His tackling is a real feature. He worked hard around the ground and got quite a few kicks. Ethan played a great Team game, especially after quarter time. Marcus Di Battista – Played well – had a good run in the midfield, chased hard and made some good tackles. Competed hard whilst in the backline and manned up really well. Hugh Marsh – Played well, Hugh kept his opponent quiet all day and won plenty of the ball when he was in the midfield. Hugh was really good a moving the ball on quickly from the free kicks he was awarded. Harry McInerney – Harry competed hard all day long. In the last quarter, whilst in the backline, Harry saved a number of goals with his effort. Lots of tackles and desperate lunges for the ball and some big kicks from defence to our midfield. Alex ‘Dusty’ Giosserano – Alex played well. Used the ball well in the second half, passed the ball well to his team mates and then followed up further down the field with more possessions.

The boys were given a bit of a rev up at half time by Grant with some very inspiring words, but the response was not there in the third quarter. Felix was one who did respond, using his pace and taking the game on at every opportunity. Campbell, in defence, was outstanding. He reads the ball so well and knows when to leave his man and impact the contest. Lucas N tried hard all day and was able to create a few good sets of play for us. The three quarter time huddle saw a lot of boys with their heads down, and despite some encouraging words it was not to be our day today. We kicking a couple of late consolation goals, but we were outplayed today by a team that wanted the ball more, wanted the win more and were prepared to put their bodies on the line and work harder in spreading from the contest. Good day to all, we have met today at Zerbes Reserve, the home of an enormous tussle years could not score. That was until big Jim Dempsey got the ball forty out from goal, the siren prior in a cricket final of all things…..Zerbes is a wonderful arena to watch any sport. went, he slotted it through ala the great Tommy Hawkins and we came to the huddle with some momentum. Geezzzzz I was keen for this game. Coming from the bush, Beverley Hills was as far fetched to me as being mates with a software half back flanker like Kilkenny – unreal! The last quarter we played some great run and carry footy culminating in two goals, one to Dave Broadbent and a great running goal by a great runner in Killa. He just iced it and we We had a great warm up thanks to Toves. Morc was still bouncing after an evening with his went onto win by ten points in a great victory. tennis mates…..nothing assumed here. We are sure they all have orchestra stalls, some larger than others. Tennis mates? An oxymoron if ever I have heard one. Two more rounds to come, we need to win at least one to ensure our double chance in the finals. Some great fun just around the corner. Now, let’s talk about teams. Let’s talk about teammates. We had 3 boys not play giving dubious reasons. Get into the room of mirrors boys – and parents. Also, the communication Best players were: Demps, Pazz, JT, Killa, Oaksy from all was very poor. A little disappointing that they can so easily let down the rest of the team. Thanks to hard men who love footy: Sam Prest, Flynn Hutchinson, Will Kenny and Connor Bastin. All of these boys stepped up from the U-12’s and acquitted themselves well. Cooper was skipper for the day and I asked for a special effort from the big guy, he started well by winning the toss and we kicked down wind with the aid of a four goal breeze. We kicked three for the term with Fox, Pazz and mighty Hutchy all slotting majors. Unfortunately they kicked on into the wind but we held a small advantage going into the first break. Demps started well in the ruck, Pazz was very busy, Sonders was getting a bit of the pill and JT was controlling the air in the back half. We struggled into the wind and predictably the ball was in their forward 50 for most of the quarter. Oaksy and his team were terrific with the onslaught and fought tooth and nail. Smithy was holding his own back there too and Killa was pushing back to help out as he does so well. We gave away some stupid free kicks and mouthed off after them giving away 25m penalties. A real lack of discipline unfortunately again demonstrating a lack of care of one’s teammates and a lack of respect for the game. We went to half time 6 points down and the coach gave the boys a bit of a touch up verbally. During the third quarter we dropped four chest marks within range of goal. The opposition basically put all of their players back into our forward line making it very congested. We tried to clear out but there was no great leadership shown on the ground and it looked like we just

Thanks also to playing under a bit of duress due to an ankle injury, kept presenting & running the forward line Bruce Waddy (U11s) who agreed to help out on the bench. Overall, really proud of the efforts of the boys the great focus points Ben Waddy, captain for the day, made at the beginning of the game. with some real improvement coming from a number of them. The end result a 22 point loss Well done Ben W. was really due to 3 “lucky” goals in the first 10 minutes. Other than that it was 1 goal each. We’ve been really competitive against the top sides recently & this was going to test us once Great performance from Charlie, Lucas, Harry, Matt & Rhys. Solomon is steay as is Ben S & again. The conditions were tough & again losing the toss & kicking into the wind for the 1st Mitch. quarter wasn’t going to make it any easier. Boys, keep working at it & we will get the rewards. You’re putting in the effort at training so Charlie was his usual super competitive self in the ruck leaping high over the top of his you deserve another win. Camberwell opponent then following up to gather the ball on the ground. Harry was sharking GO SHARKS!!! his taps & we were by means out-classed. The wind was a factor though & a dubious free kick, a soccer off the ground & a long range bouncing effort by Camberwell resulted in their Captains: Ben W 3 goals for the quarter. We managed to get the ball forward towards the end of the quarter with Dan W again looking dangerous but we couldn’t get a score on the board before the siren Goal Kickers: Charlie went. Best players: Charlie, Lucas, Harry, James, Mitch, Ben S, Solomon, Matt, Rhys, Oscar For the 2nd quarter, Lucas was again playing a great game. His hard ball gathers, good marking & long kicking is really developing. He stood tall beating 2 opponents on the wing to earn a well deserved free kick. Charlie also through his hard work earned a free kick & with a monster drop punt put through our first goal of the day. The backline had really tightened up. Dan S & Ben S were their usual steady selves, pleasing getting boot to ball to clear it our of defence. Really liked Rhys & Matt & their spoiling from behind. Oscar & James were combining nicely. We won the quarter & were right in the game at half time, trailing by 14 points. After halftime, Blake moved into the ruck & Charlie went forward. Oscar moved to midfield & again gathered & kicked well. Solomon’s ability to move through traffic at full back was a highlight & Harry off the back flank was mopping up Camberwell’s forays forward. Mitch’s attack on the ball is unquestioned. He chases, harrasses & then when he wins the ball uses it really well. Boston is really presenting now a as a leading forward. Moving across the ground & making himself a target. By 3/4 time, we were down by 21 points but still right in it. With the wind we dominated possession but to Camberwell’s credit they made it very difficult

Our determination and a great team effort saw us record our third win for the season. Special Thanks: Josh Tovey, Matt Parrott, James “Jack” Dempsey, Will Sonderhof; Oscar Pollack The game started with us winning the toss and kicking with the wind at Stintons. The undermanned side was able to kick a couple of goals and just stay just in touch with the opposition until the second term when our U13 Sharks Brigade turned up and added run to our game. Our team knew that if we were able to hold the opposition to a close score, the running game that our Shark fill ins provide would make us more than competitive. True to form - in our second and third quarter we kicked 8 goals – to be in front by 11 points, leading into the final term. Our second quarter against the wind was a true battle, but in the third quarter with the wind our players ran in numbers provided shepherds and moved the ball to our strong marking forwards. Our defensive play was strong and tough - the physical aspects of how we attacked the football was a credit to the entire playing group. After losing the past two games by close margins the message was to continue to play attacking football. Kicking against the wind we started with two players extra in defence and instructed players to run off the line and defend to the club rooms/ pavilion side of the ground. We attacked and our on-ballers had a number of shots on goal which put pressure on the oppositions defence. Leading by just over a goal our constant attack saw the margin increase - point by point. Our structured play, with players self managing our numbers behind the ball was extremely impressive – the strategic defence resembled building a fort in a game of Fortnite. For the second week in a row we experienced a terrible injury to one of our players - match day Captain Flynn Wade injured his knee and was carried from field to a couple of Ambo’s and the comfort of their green whistle.

Third quarter Ashburton we’re giving their all and once again the wind gave them the advantage but our defence stood firm with only 1 point being scored by them. Our game was to run the ball and play on into the wind and one of our better runners Maddie Moran created a great goal and a 3 goal advantage and the wind going into the last quarter. Fourth quarter Got off to a great start with Jayde Peters kicking a long torp to goal and with Lily Mercer kicking 1 and Mia Servinis kicking 2 last quarter goals we had another convincing win ! The game was played in great spirit and with Ashburton only having 14 players we gave them 2 players per quarter. This gave more ground time to all of our girls and perhaps it’s was the promise of a hot dog and s bag of lollies for a goal from our girls they all were close to the best players for them and acquitted themselves wonderfully!

THE SHARK ATTACK 42 Edition 13, 2018 THE SHARK ATTACK 43 Edition 13, 2018 UNDER 13 GIRLS COACH: Mike Newton SPONSORED BY: CVA PROPERTY Ian Angelico: 9654 2311 Eastland Park Orchards – 3.6.24 Def Kew Comets (2) 0.2.2

With the finals just around the corner and five teams pushing for the four available finals spots. Park Orchards took to Domeney with an extra spring in their step. They had fallen short the previous time they played the Key Comets (2) team, however they knew they were more than capable of securing an all-important win this time araound. The Sharks came out firing and quickly moved and then held the ball in their forward half. Inaccuracy in front of goal once again frustrated the girls, with their dominance on the field not being reflected on the scoreboard. A goal to Ava late in the quarter gave the Sharks an eight point lead. The second quarter was a tight contest, Kew had settled and were now taking it up to the Sharks. Neither team was able to get any real ascendancy. This was reflected on the scoreboard with only a single behind being scored by Kew for the entire quarter. A seven point lead, in a very low scoring game was far from being a comfortable lead to the Sharks. It felt like the girls were somewhat in control of the game. However with such a slender margin to defend anything was possible. The Sharks once again controlled possession of the ball but failed to add scoreboard pressure in the third. A couple of behinds and holding Kew scoreless is all they could show for their efforts, throughout a strongly contested quarter. Going into the final quarter it was realistically either team’s game to win, with only nine points separating the two teams. Charli was finally rewarded for her solid effort throughout the game. She was able to goal after breaking the pack and having a couple of bounces and goaling on the run. Then Kiara kicked truly to put the game out of doubt. Finally the Sharks were being rewarded for their hard work. Great effort girls a well-deserved win. Captain: Starly Best Players: Charli, Lily, Amy, Alana, Ava, Mim, Starly Goals: Ava Charli, Kiara

Vas was out recovering from a knock last week and several of our Yarra girls had Volley ball commitments which altered their pre-game routine (i.e 12 Flynn Peters 51 Zoe Douglas there was none). continuing their fine games we were well on top. A couple of lapses allowed Fitzroy to goal We started with 16 as Lana and Jazz arrived as the ball bounced. Lu won the tap to Chloe with the sting out of the game, most were looking for the siren to sound. Job done in tough who kicked us forward, but it was a scrappy start by both teams as the girls struggled to pick conditions. up the footy and when we had possession the wind made kicking cleanly difficult. Sharks had a strong wind in Q1 but couldn’t win many clean possessions as Fitzroy applied pressure at Captain: Mia every contest. However, our marking was good with Flynn marking in defence, Chloe taking Goals: Lana 4, Lauren 3, Lu 1, Zoe 1 & Matilda 1 a strong grab up forward and Lu and Lauren taking strong marks but overall we had started poorly failing to kick a goal 0.5.5 to Fitz 0.1.1. Thanks to Ava Leonard U13’s for helping out in Best players: Lana, Jorja, Lauren, Jazz & Lu Q1. In Q2 we started to dominate the wings with Jorja and Kristen winning plenty of possessions. Nat B was running hard off the back flank & Mia was working the forward flank. Lana’s signature bump was on display as she sent an opponent flying and Lu showed her competitiveness by crashing the pack. Flynn was holding her marks brilliantly across CHB and Jazz was winning the clearance in the middle. Lauren’s classy work at FF resulted in 2 goals but we sprayed a few more attempts finishing at Half time 2.8.20 to Fitz 0.2.2. Sheltering from the cold we huddled in the rooms at half time as the coaches re-set the girls for a dominant 2nd half. We were being sucked into the contest and play was congested – no more than 4 at a contest was the aim. Spread out 10-15 off the contest when we already have numbers. The girl’s spatial awareness and positioning needs to improve – it’s a difficult part of the game but we must improve … as stoppages repeat more players get sucked in closer and closer. Mia (R13 Capt) takes a strong mark Ava Leonard busting through 3 opponents In Q3 we had the wind again and this time we put the foot down. Mia was winning the ball and when Chloe passed to Jorja on to Zoe D who kicked beautifully to Lana who goaled in 1 min 20 seconds we were on our way. Chelsea kicked long out of defence and Hanni was kicking strongly down the lines – we had warmed up. Finally!! Lu goaled and Matilda goaled in quick succession. Jade was determined in traffic and cleared the ball effectively. We had started to reduce the congestion with quicker ball movement. Tilly H was strong in defence and Sophie was winning heaps of possessions across half back line. Lana kicked a sensational goal on the run and followed with a 2nd making it 3 for her in Q3. We added 5 gaols to go in at Q3 7.11.53 to Fitz 0.2.2 As the rain poured during the Q3 break the girls were soaked but they sucked it up and hit Q4 with plenty of run. We pressed forward and Zoe D kicked a great goal. With Jorja and Lana Nat B handballs to Matilda who goes on to goal

Before the 32 Smart Angel 62 Cookes Sophie game it was great to recognise Lilli for 100 games and Angel for 50 games. Well done girls 36 DePetro Gabbi 65 McCarthy Kirra We started the game with 18 thanks to Zara and Alex from our other youth girl team who had 37 Philipsen Samira 67 Butler Ella a bye this week. The first quarter saw us kicking with the wind to the southern end of the 38 Urban Tiana 68 Hoen Ash ground. Our opposition could only field 14 on the ground. We were determined to get off to good start with most players in their regular positions. We had all the play in the first quarter but still congested our forward line and only managed 1 goal 6 behinds from 8 or 9 scoring attempts. Our centres controlled the stoppages with plenty of run Jacky, Ibby, Addy and Paris and were well supported by Samira, Tiana and Gibbo on half forward. Quarter time score was 1.6-12 to 0.0-0. As the game was somewhat one sided in the second quarter we gave some players a run in different positions putting Brooke at full forward and Penny at full back. Our lack of manning up and run let Ivanhoe back in the game and Penny became quite busy but we could not stop Ivanhoe from scoring 2.1-13. However we regrouped in the last part of the 2nd quarter and kicked 2.1 thanks to Paris with 2 goals into the wind to halve the quarter. As usual Sophie had a cracking game but had to leave at half time to go to camp. Stay warm Sophie. Half time scores were 3.7-25 to 2.1-13. In the third quarter Samira started dominating the ruck and our ball movement was much improved. Our centres including Ally were getting good clearances as we controlled the game and the scoreboard in the 3rd term putting on another 20 points. Ella gave us some good run and attack on the ball. Forays forward by Ivanhoe were easily repelled by Angel, Sky, Kat & Penny with support from Ash and Tiana. We had a good return kicking 3.2 to ex our lead. We entered ¾ time 6.9-45 to 2.1-13. We were determined to put on a better show and despite resting Paris and Samira for the quarter we managed to kick 2 gaols 2 points in the last and had really good ball movement. Great to see Lilli score a goal and take on the play before tripping over and providing everyone a laugh. A good solid win for the girls finishing the game 8.11-59 to 3.2-20 Goal kickers Paris 3, Kirra, Ibby, Samira, Lilli and Penny had 1 each. Thanks also to our under 11 buddies who came to support and joined in as water carriers. Good job girls. See you at training.
