Week 1 E-Record.Indd E-Footy RECORD 29th - 30th March 2008 Issue 1 Editorial with Marty King Greetings and welcome to another exciting season of the Pineapple Hotel Cup. To newly ap- pointed club coaches and offi cials thanks for coming on board and good luck in the ever chal- lenging times at club land. After consultation with all stakeholders a number of changes have taken place in the off season which will hopefully promote autonomy and competition from within the competition. These changes include • Reverting to a “Final Five” format from the previous “Top Eight” system. This will cer- tainly make jockeying for fi nals contention more competitive and value add to away wins and percentage boosters • Moving to stand alone status for the Duncanson/Todd Medal Presentation. In 2008 due to the Queensland “Hall of Fame” format at this years Grogan Medal Night time restraints and individual status of awards means the splitting of the format which will be addressed again post event • A stand alone Pineapple Hotel Cup Grand Final for the fi rst time in the past three years. This will also result in the Preliminary and Grand Finals being played at the best avail- able neutral venue with the Reserves playing at the same venue as a Curtain Raiser • And of course this new format user friendly Football Record which will be available for clubs to download and print off and control distribution rather than incur costs and sometimes be unable to pick up records from AFLQ. Once again this will be trialled in 2008 and reviewed post season. I do encourage clubs to “experiment” with this and use the format to insert their own individual brand and messages they wish to promote through the publication It would be a gross understatement to say its been a quiet off season with a lot happening on a national front (17th AFL license on the Gold Coast) and domestically times of change within our own State League Competitions. We continue to promote varying levels of competition for the current and future wave of participants in the unique market which is Queensland footy. Contrary to southern beliefs the game has been alive and prospering in the northern state for longer than some may think. In 2008 we celebrate the landmark of 150 Years of Australian Football. It should be and will be a celebration of our great game and especially over Rivalry Round (May 9-10) we invite clubs to join in the party and create their own footprint to com- memorate this event Martin King Football Operations Manager Next Week’s Games E-Footy Saturday 5th April Wilston Grange v Sandgate Record Aspley v Maroochy/Northshore Burleigh v Springwood Chief Executive Offi cer: Richard Griffi ths Football Operations Manager: Marty King Coolangatta v Western Magpies Record Editor: David Heilbron Surfers Paradise v Palm Beach Currumbin Media Consultant: Peter Blucher Advertising: Penny Chapple Sunday 6th April All Correspondence to: Mayne v Noosa The Editor, Footy Record, AFL Queensland, PO Box 1211 COORPAROO DC, QLD 4151. Scandals in sport AN ACCOMPANIMENT TO ON THE TAKE TONY JOEL AND MATHEW TURNER Contemporary Histories Research Group, Deakin University February 2020 he events that enveloped the Victorian Football League (VFL) generally and the Carlton Football Club especially in September 1910 were not unprecedented. Gambling was entrenched in TMelbourne’s sporting landscape and rumours about footballers “playing dead” to fix the results of certain matches had swirled around the city’s ovals, pubs, and back streets for decades. On occasion, firmer allegations had even forced authorities into conducting formal inquiries. The Carlton bribery scandal, then, was not the first or only time when footballers were interrogated by officials from either their club or governing body over corruption charges. It was the most sensational case, however, and not only because of the guilty verdicts and harsh punishments handed down. As our new book On The Take reveals in intricate detail, it was a particularly controversial episode due to such a prominent figure as Carlton’s triple premiership hero Alex “Bongo” Lang being implicated as the scandal’s chief protagonist. Indeed, there is something captivating about scandals involving professional athletes and our fascination is only amplified when champions are embroiled, and long bans are sanctioned. As a by-product of modernity’s cult of celebrity, it is not uncommon for high-profile sportspeople to find themselves exposed by unlawful, immoral, or simply ill-advised behaviour whether it be directly related to their sporting performances or instead concerning their personal lives. Most cases can be categorised as somehow relating to either sex, illegal or criminal activity, violence, various forms of cheating (with drugs/doping so prevalent it can be considered a separate category), prohibited gambling and match-fixing.

  • AFL Coaching Newsletter - April 2009
AFL Coaching Newsletter - April 2009 THE NEW SEASON Most community football leagues around Australia kick off this weekend or immediately after Easter and NAB AFL Auskick Centres commence their programs in the next month. This newsletter focuses on a range of topics which are relevant to the commencement of the 2009 Australian Football season. PLAYING AND TRAINING IN HOT CONDITIONS The new season generally starts in warm to hot conditions and there is always a lift in intensity once the premiership season proper starts. Regardless of the quality of pre-season training programs, early games are usually more stressful and players and coaches should keep safety factors associated with high intensity exercise in warm conditions in mind – these include individual player workloads (use of the bench), hydration and sun sense. The following article by AIS/AFL Academy dietitian Michelle Cort provides good advice regarding player hydration. Toughen Up - Have a Drink! Why are so many trainers necessary on a senior AFL field and why they are constantly approaching players for a drink during a game? Obviously the outcome of not drinking enough fluid is dehydration. The notion of avoiding fluid during sport to ‘train’, ‘toughen’ or ‘adjust’ an athlete’s body to handle dehydration is extremely outdated & scientifically incorrect. Even very small amounts of dehydration will reduce an AFL player’s performance. Most senior AFL conditioning, nutrition and medical staff invest considerable time into ensuring the players are doing everything possible to prevent significant dehydration from occurring in training and games. The effects on performance are not limited to elite athletes.
