Batch, a nine-year NFL veteran and Pittsburgh-area native, starts in place of BEN ROETHLISBERGER, who underwent an emergency appendectomy on Sunday. Batch aims to lead the Steelers to their fourth consecutive Kickoff Weekend victory in the club’s first game following its Super Bowl XL championship. Culpepper, making his first start as a member of the Dolphins, can make history in 2006 by being the first player to lead both the AFC and NFC in touchdown passes for a season. The skies opened up, putting an end to the sweltering heat that had been exacerbated by the Bomb. Unfortunately, instead of a cleansing rain, all of the dust thrown into the sky caused the rain to turn black. The 1989 Ridley Scott joint, Black Rain, featuring the original Jack Bauer - - - Michael Douglas, focused upon the impact on modern day Asian culture. Well, the rain was more purple than black in Miami, but the showdown between the first two bald NFL head coaches was also memorable. Unless you count Hank Stram and Bud Grant in Super Bowl IV. The NFL no longer promotes erectile dysfunction drugs, but Hair Club for Men missed a great marketing opportunity on Sunday. The 92-yard kickoff return to open the show rivaled Billy Crystal’s Oscar opener featuring Crystal as Hannibal Lecter. Too bad the rest of the game was pretty pedestrian based upon bad weather conditions and the implosion of Grossman. The game was touted as a matchup between Indy’s Peyton Manning and Chicago LB Brian Urlacher. But, like all football games, it really came down to the guys in the pits. -

As part of “Play Football Month” (Aug. 15-Sept. 15), the footballs will be given to high school programs around the country for use at their discretion with an emphasis on Gulf Coast schools recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Balls also will be donated to international football programs. The 5,000 balls were ready for use during the 2006 NFL season, but Commissioner Tagliabue called an audible following the selection of Roger Goodell to succeed him earlier this month. The NFL’s official football supplier, Wilson Sporting Goods Co., began producing new balls this week for the 2006 season stamped with Goodell's signature, beginning with the season opener, Thursday, Sept. 7 (Miami Dolphins vs. Pittsburgh Steelers). The “Commissioner Tagliabue” footballs will be used throughout preseason. “Play Football Month” was created to celebrate the beginning of football season at all levels – from youth leagues to the NFL – and includes clinics, skills competitions, scrimmages, picnics and parades for football fans in communities throughout the country. -

Levitt’s findings are based on unique data from a wagering contest of the 2002 National Football League (NFL) season. Reconsideration based on 2004-2010 data from a similar contest yields find- ings of a dramatically smaller increase in expected profitability from strategic line making. Additionally, the traditional underperformance of favorites in athletic wagering may have somewhat subsided, which would also imply reduced bookmaker profits compared to those Levitt reports. I don’t mind people thinking I’m stupid, but I don’t want to give them any proof.“ - Bum Phillips, Houston Oilers coach OPENING OA (Bum) Phillips is the football equivalent of Yogi Berra, and the above quotation could be just as applicable to Chowds head coach Bill Belichick. Dr. Evil narrowly missed a fourth championship after jettisoning LB Willie McGinest, WR Deion Branch and K Adam (Money) Vinatieri. On Sunday, the chickens came home to roost, as Money contributed to an incredible comeback win by the Indianapolis Ponies. As the 2006 NFL season makes its final turn, the Look Man is thrilled to have witnessed some incredible action. The Conference Championships were simply the crowning glory to a season that saw New Orleans rise from the ashes of a 3-13 season to nearly represent the NFC in the Bowl. The Ponies overcame the weight of expectations, becoming this season’s version of the Blitzburgh Stillers down the stretch. Chicago has parlayed a ball-hawking defense and streaky QB into a championship run in the weak NFC. New England nearly reclaimed its championship ways despite an injury depleted defense and a receiver challenged offense. It has been a season for the ages and Sunday did not disappoint. Meanwhile, the rest of the league keeps on turning. Cincinnati had its ninth player arrest of the season. Bill (Tuna) Parcells decided to promote Grecian Formula instead of coaching the melodrama in Allas (no D). -

Emeril Lagasse hosted the event. In Los Angeles, a star-studded line-up of celebrities including Bob Barker, Melody Thomas Scott, Tony Geary and Lisa Rinna presented the awards. Todd Newton hosted the event. Awards were presented in such categories as: Directing in a Talk Show; Casting Director for a Drama Series; Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design; Writing in a Children’s series; Costume Design/Styling; Multiple Camera Editing; Music Direction and Composition; Direction in a Children’s Special. Emmy Awards are presented to daytime television programs that are broadcast nationally between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 p.m. The eligibility period for this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards was January 1, 2002 – December 31, 2002. Daytime Emmy Awards in 19 additional categories, primarily for performances and programs, including the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at the 30th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday, May 16 (8-11 PM ET/PT) and aired on ABC. -
