It is conceived in terms of the human organism which is the most evolved living form. the names of the various limbs of the human body from the foot to the hair on the crown of the head are applied in the 1 architectural texts to different parts of the temple structure. Through out the greater part of the country, the sanctuary as a whole is known as the vimana, of which the upper pyramidal or tapering portion is called the shikhara, meaning tower or spire. The garbha Graha or womb-house for the reception of the divine symbol was a dark chamber which was entered by a doorway on its inner, and usually eastern side.. In front of the Grabha graham was a pillared hall or mandapa for the assembly of those paying their devotions to the divine symbol. From about the beginning of the 7th century, the sanctum was roofed by a tall, curvilinear spire (Shikhar) which constituted the most striking cognizance of the Northern Temple. The spire was initially of three vertical projections which gradually increased to five and occasionally seven. All these projections are covered with a mesh of Chaitya- dormers and the corner ones display in addition a series of small amalakas at the angles to demarcate the division of the spire into compressed storeys.

    Honor and Shame in Rajasthan Woodrow W. Denham Fujairah, United Arab Emirates 25 February 2001 The great earthquake that hit the Indian State of Gujarat in January missed us by about 300 miles. When it happened we were riding in an old car on a bumpy road in the Aravalli Hills of south-central Rajasthan. We felt nothing, but other people in the vicinity who were not travelling felt it when it happened. No serious damage was reported in Rajasthan, but as I'm sure you know, it took an enormous toll in Gujarat. Estimates of the number dead range from 18,000 to 100,000, and the actual number almost certainly never will be known. When we traveled for three months in South India in 1990, we still fancied ourselves to be old hippies. We followed our Lonely Planet Guide religiously, found hotels on the run, rode the trains a lot, and had the “real” India right in our faces for much of the time. This year we looked carefully at our ages, our past experiences in India and Bangladesh, and our tight schedule of only fifteen days, and did it differently. Emirates Airlines carried us back and forth between Dubai and Delhi, and we flew Indian Airlines to Jaipur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer. We had advance reservations at good hotels and ate safe food all the time so we never got Delhi-belly. However, both of us came down with respiratory infections. I recovered quickly, but Nancy ended up with a nasty form of pneumonia, a close cousin to Legionnaire’s Disease.

These landscapes exhibit our culture and history and it is equally important to conserve them, along with built monuments, to truly protect and represent them as sites of the past. This study focuses upon one such important cultural landscape of historic Amber fort and town, located in Jaipur district, India. Amber Fort Complex along with six other hill forts in the state of Rajasthan was recently added to the tentative list of World Heritage Sites. It was India’s World Heritage Site nomination in the cultural category in 2012. Amber Fort and the surrounding cultural landscape evolved from the 11th to 17th cen- tury and represent elements of both Hindu and Islamic architecture. The site contains three forts, lakes, gardens and Amber town with its old temples and living heritage, all located in Aravalli hill range and its valleys. It is an important tourist destination and this site alone contributes to almost one-third of the city’s total revenue from tourism. As in many other historic sites in India, the focus of conservation efforts in Amber is on his- toric monuments rather than on cultural landscapes and intangible heritage.
