EXPOSITION Each Friday during Lent at 6 pm Our Lady & St. Kenelm will be open for one hour for silent prayer and Adoration. Come and go. Stewards will be on duty. OBSERVANCE OF LENT. Fasting is observed by all aged 18 and over who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to need, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Parents should ensure that even those who are still too young to be bound by the laws of fasting and abstinence are trained to have a true appreciation of penance. Abstinence is observed by all aged 14 and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not apply. Weh in doubt about fasting and abstinence consult the priest. Almsgiving in conjunction with fasting and abstinence, and linked with a greater intensity in prayer, opens our awareness to the needs of other for whom fasting and abstinence are an unavoidable way of life. Helena O’ Leary. Helena was a parishioner between 1988 and 2002 and some of you may remember her. Here is an email from her daughter Margaret Finch, who reports that Helena has died and wishes me to pass this on to those of you who knew her mother: Dear Fr Stephen, My mother, Mrs Helena O’ Leary was a parishioner of your parish between 1988 and 2002. She and my Dad, Ronald O’Leary, were Eucharistic ministers for many years there. She moved from Longborough to Stow after my Dad died in 1990. In 2002 she moved to Winchester where she joined the parish community of St Peter’s and continued her service to the Catholic community there. Almost 5 years ago she entered the Catholic Residential Care Home in Hook, run by the Dominican Sisters of Malta. They provided much love and compassion and a rich spiritual environment which my Mum really appreciated. Sadly, she died on Saturday 26th (I assume December, Fr. S) surrounded by the prayers from the Sisters. Fortunately, despite COVID restrictions we were able to visit her and say our goodbyes. The community celebrated a requiem mass in her room before the undertakers took her body away. I’m aware that many of her contemporaries may have died or moved away. But it would be good, if possible, to announce her death as she was so much part of the community in the time she was there. Thank you. Margaret Finch Archbishop Tartaglia of Glasgow, died on 13th January, 2021. This is a huge loss to the Scottish Catholic Church. His Funeral Requiem took place on Thursday 21st January. The Clifton Diocese website reports: Following the announcement of the death of Archbishop Philip Tartaglia of Glasgow, Cardinal Vincent Nichols expressed his sorrow and offered prayers. In a statement he said: ‘I have learned with great sadness of the sudden death of Archbishop Philip Tartaglia. All of Scotland will be saddened and shocked by his death, sentiments shared throughout England and Wales, too. He, and his family, are much in our prayers. I have often enjoyed the warm hospitality of Archbishop Tartaglia and admired his pastoral sense and sharp mind. His leadership will be greatly missed. ‘May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.’ PARISH ADMINISTRATOR: ANDREW GORZYNSKI (mob) 07483 866692 PARISH WEBSITE: stow-bourtoncatholic.net .
