Problem 1: Triathlon Travels Problem Captain: Wayne Otte Divisions I, II, III, & IV On your mark…get set…go! In this problem, teams will ride on and drive original vehicles in an Odyssey-style triathlon. They will try to score in “curling,” hit the right targets when “jousting,” and “run track” by navigating a course in two directions. Between these events, the team will entertain the audience and the vehicle will change appearance. All of the action will take place in a team-created performance that features the vehicles’ triathlon travels, a commentator, and a coach.

Problem 2: Emoji, Speak for Yourself Problem Captain: Carol Biros Divisions I, II, & III Three-dimensional emojis will be used to communicate the life story of a once famous, but now forgotten, emoji. Teams will create a performance where the emojis demonstrate special functions like growing, turning into a team member, and changing into a different emoji. Performances will also include a choreographed dance, a technical representation of texting, and sounds to enhance the performance. The twist? No spoken language is allowed.

Problem 3: Classics... Mockumentary! Seriously? Problem Captain: Matt Lopez Divisions I, II, III & IV There are often two sides to the same story. In this problem, characters don’t always agree as they recount the classic story where they appeared. The team will select a classic from a list and present different characters in a humorous documentary-style performance where details are added, denied, exaggerated, and disputed. There will be interviews, behind-the-scenes “clips,” and voice-overs that take the audience through the story and help present the events as they “really”

Problem 4: Animal House Problem Captain: Dan Semenza Divisions I, II, III & IV Over the years, Odyssey of the Mind teams have designed structures that changed into many unbelievable shapes and sizes that balanced and held as much weight as possible. This year, teams will turn their balsa wood structures into animals! Since animals need to eat, they must be fed. The structure will have its appearance transformed and explained during an original performance. During the performance, the structure must hold the team-created food while it supports weights.

Problem 5: A Stellar Hangout Problem Captain: Sharlene Smith Divisions I, II, III & IV In the outreaches of the universe, there is an Intergalactic Hangout where all sorts of creatures from different worlds stop, eat, refuel, and relax. Teams will create a humorous performance centered on this science fiction hangout that includes original creatures, foods, and a search for space treasure. There will also be a worker character, entertainment, and a futuristic map at the hangout. Sneak Peek at Dr. Sam's New Book!

Learn about OotM founder, Dr. Sam's adventures in creativity and about how Odyssey of the Mind got its start in "The Spirit of Creativity." This book describes Dr. Sam's experiences with education, creativity, and with Odyssey, along with his many international travels. It will also give you a behind-the-scenes view of how the program and World Finals is run. Here's an excerpt from Chapter Five, "Anecdotes of Odyssey of the Mind."

There have been countless stories about Odyssey of the Mind. Everyone involved in the program has stories to tell. These are overwhelmingly positive. This chapter contains some of them. Some are humorous, some helped to shape the program, and some are stories that I just hope you enjoy. They bring back fond memories for those of us who have experienced them, and hopefully will bring a smile to those reading about them for the first time.

Why OMER had to be a Raccoon.

Why was a raccoon chosen to be the Odyssey of the Mind mascot? This question has been asked many times. When our family was young we went camping. We found that raccoons and campgrounds go together. They soon became our favorite animal. From our cabin, we would often take drives to see wildlife. One day we were driving though the woods and came upon a remote trading post. We stopped for sodas and I bought three small ceramic raccoons chained together.

Later that year, I made Carole a pen and ink drawing of raccoons for Christmas. As I began my two-million-mile journey spreading Odyssey of the Mind, I bought raccoons in airport gift shops and local boutiques. When I decided to have a mascot for Odyssey of the Mind, there was no doubt that it would be a raccoon. Omer is perfect. He has led the U.S. Army band, and the U.S. Army's Golden Knights carried his flag in a parachute jump. He is very popular with the kids and adults at competitions.

Carole and I have over 1,000 raccoons in our collection. Each year we have one of our Christmas trees with only raccoon ornaments. I put it outside on our lanai and enjoy it every evening from my chair in our family room. Living in Florida is living in raccoon country. When we see one, it's like seeing an old friend - except for that one that took my sunglasses out of my golf cart. On the other hand, he or she dropped my glasses where I could get them back. We can't wait to see another raccoon. 2018 Odyssey World Finals Credential Guide

Parking Information

The Department of Public Safety is dedicated to accommodating the needs of everyone who visits our beautiful campus. We’ve designed roads, sidewalks, bike paths, parking lots and public safety services to make it convenient and safe to travel around campus – by foot, bicycle, car or bus. It’s a beautiful campus and a busy place, so we’ve tried to make it user-friendly and enjoyable for everyone.

Residence Area Parking Teams living in residence housing on campus will be able to park in a designated lot (you will be directed to a lot at registration). Lots are by permit only. (The permit is issued at registration.) Use the Odyssey of the Mind CyRide Routes to get to and from the parking lots.

General Parking Those not staying in the residence halls should park at the Iowa State Center lots south of Hilton Coliseum. There is no charge for parking in this area and a free Odyssey of the Mind CyRide bus, A (Orange) route and B (Blue) route, is provided to central campus. Please refer to the CyRide pages for route and schedule information. Additional parking adjacent to central campus is available at the Memorial Union parking ramp and East Campus Parking Deck – there is an hourly charge.

Normal restrictions apply to fire lines, spaces marked “handicapped parking”, and spaces reserved for service vehicles. Other university lots are assigned to university staff. Please take care to avoid restricted areas.

ISU’s HELPVAN Program provides free emergency motorist services on campus. These services are available by calling 294-4444 Monday-Friday, from 7:30 am to 11:00 pm.

Bus Parking If your team is chartering a coach to bring you to Ames, please make the following arrangements with your driver. When on campus, the charter should park in the general lots south of the Iowa State Center. Due to construction, charters will have no access to campus this year. Parking or holding is not allowed for buses on central campus. Groups should plan to walk or take a shuttle to the Iowa State Center to meet and board their charter bus. Be sure to exchange cell phone numbers with your driver in case either of you need to reach each other. Departure Airport Shuttles

Return shuttle information can be confirmed at registration in Stephens Auditorium Tuesday and Wednesday or at the Ames/ISU information desk at the Memorial Union Thursday-Saturday.

All return shuttles will depart from the west side of the Stephens Auditorium at the Odyssey of the Mind bus stop.
