These paintings, shaped by the social and political atmosphere they were created in, have shaped the perception and memory of the American Revolution in a very particular way. This paper seeks to determine that perception by analyzing Trumbull himself, the political culture of the 1780s to 1820s, and the art world of the same period to better understand Trumbull’s most influential paintings and the effect they had and still have on American memory. Through the examination of John Trumbull’s paintings and their impact on the memory of the American Revolution, this paper serves as a case study for the use of images in historical understanding. María Magdalena Ziegler D.1: Metropolitan University (Caracas, Venezuela) [email protected] ABSTRACT Through the review of the five individual cases of the artists Jacques-Louis David, Benjamin West, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, Eugene Delacroix and John Trumbull, it is shown how historical painting since the late XVIIIth Century presents a reinterpretation of the meaning of history and the facts of the past in their respective present. Although history painting is not a new genre at the end of the XVIIIth Century, it did have clear guidelines highly respected in academic circles in the West. The novelty is that a new view of history is approached, in tune with present needs is configured from the paintings. In this sense, assuming each of the artworks analyzed as the solution to a problem, every art work is deciphered as a solvent contribution.     MONTICELLO NEWSLETTER VOLUME 17, NUMBER 1; SPRING 2006 Jefferson, Trumbull, and painting ‘Yorktown’ homas Jefferson recognized the talents of American artist John Trumbull and was intrigued by Trumbull’s plan to create a series of paintings depicting important moments in the American struggle for independence. Jefferson was serving as U.S. minister to France when the two men met in London in the spring of 786, and he suggested that the young artist visit Paris. Trumbull recalled in his autobiography that Jefferson “kindly invited me to come to Paris, to see and study the fine works there, and to make his house my home, during my stay.” This Issue’s Trumbull arrived in Paris that Other Stories summer and brought with him studies ARCHITECTURAL ARTIFACTS for the first two paintings planned for ❧ his series, depictions of two 775 events, ❧ CHILDREN’S GUIDE the battle of Bunker Hill and the ❧ CENTER FOR HISTORIC PLANTS American attack on Quebec. [From pension records in the Library of Virginia:] This Certifies that the Bearer Miles Cardiff Soldier in the corps of invalids having been examined by me is found to be unfit for any further duty either in the field or garrison on Account of a wound which has rendered his Arm useless which also appears by a certificate lodged in my office singed by his Colonel and the Surgeon of his regiment. He is, at his own request recommended to his Excellency, the commander in chief for a Discharge agreeable to a resolution of Congress of the twenty third of April 1782. Given under my hand V’r Planks Point [Verplanck Point NY] this 15th Day of Sept. 1782 Walter Stewart Col./ Inspt’r of North’n. Army By his Excellency George Washington Esqr. General and Commander in chief of the forces of the united states of America.
