Press Release 8.1.2019 ROBERT NOMINATIONS 2019 CELEBRATING a THRILLING YEAR in DANISH FILM and TV! the Danish Film Academy Has A Press release 8.1.2019 ROBERT NOMINATIONS 2019 CELEBRATING A THRILLING YEAR IN DANISH FILM AND TV! The Danish Film Academy has announced the nominations for this year’s ROBERT awards. The country’s most coveted award will celebrate the diverse and consistently high quality of Danish film and tv output, and see newcomers go head to head with veterans in the major categories. The Academy presents the 35th ROBERT awards on Sunday February 3rd, 2019 with entertainer Jan Gintberg as show host. A total of 27 feature films were in the running for the many ROBERT statuettes. A testimony of a strong film-year, but this year the tv-categories saw even fiercer competition as both ‘best tv-series’ and ‘best short tv-series’ had twice as many potential nominees. Three very different veterans of Danish cinema scooped the most nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, led by Bille August’s ‘A Fortunate Man’ on top with 16, Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built’ with 12 and Christoffer Boe’s ‘The Purity of Vengeance’ with 11 alongside newcomers Niclas Bendixen’s ‘Ditte & Louise’ with 11 and Gustav Möller’s ‘The Guilty’ with 9 nominations. Another first effort, ‘Holiday’, secured Isabella Eklöf a nomination as Best Director as well as one for Best Screenplay in collaboration with Johanne Algren, which gives the film a total of 7 nominations. The booming Danish tv-production output is also honoured at the ROBERT awards and the competition is close this year with DR Drama’s ‘Liberty’ and ‘Ride Upon the Storm II’ facing off with Miso Film’s ‘Warrior’ and ‘The Rain’ as well as Nimbus Film & Filmlance’s ‘The Bridge IIII’. The Best Documentary will be found among Elvira Lind’s ‘Bobbi Jene’, Simon Lereng Wilmont’s ‘Distant Barking of Dogs’, Cille Hannibal’s ‘The Night We Fell’, Malene Choi Jensen’s ‘The Return’ and Emil Næsby Hansen’s ‘The Two Of Us’. The winner of the Best Children & Youth Film category will be either ‘Checkered Ninja’, ‘Vitello’, ‘Land of Glass’, ‘Wildwitch’ or the youth drama ‘Sticks & Stones’. All nominations were decided by the academy members based on their profession, and it is now up to the more than 2500 members of The Danish Film Academy to vote for the winners in all categories. See the full list of nominations below. The ROBERT AWARDS will be held on Sunday February 3rd, 2019 from 5:30pm at the Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center. SYNOPSIS There’s a theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. If Churchill won WW2 in a heavy daze of alcohol, who knows what a few drops might do for them and their students? Initial results are positive, and the teachers’ little project turns into a genuine academic study. Both their classes and their results continue to improve, and the group feels alive again! As the units are knocked back, some of the participants see further improvement and others go off the rails. It becomes increasingly clear that while alcohol may have fueled great results in world history, some bold acts carry consequences. DIRECTOR’S INTENT THOMAS VINTERBERG “I never drink before breakfast.” The quote is from Churchill, who helped to defeat the Germans and win World War II, while under the excessive and constant influence of alcohol.

International Casting Directors Network Index 01 Welcome 02 About the ICDN 04 Index of Profiles 06 Profiles of Casting Directors 76 About European Film Promotion 78 Imprint 79 ICDN Membership Application form Gut instinct and hours of research “A great film can feel a lot like a fantastic dinner party. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • “Aspects of Danish Cinema”
Programme of Danish Film Screenings at the Danish Institute at Athens 2018 “Aspects of Danish Cinema”. By Ioanna Athanassatou/Film Historic at the Greek Open University & the University of Athens Screening on the 26th of April 2018 Silent heart (2014) by Bille August In film screening programme of the last 2 years, we have had the chance to see I line of Danish movies from Carl Dreyer, Lars von Trier, Susanne Bier and Thomas Vinterberg. Today we have chosen to screen “Silent heart” - in Danish ”Stille hjerte” and in Greek “Αθόρυβη καρδιά” (2014) by Bille August, the fourth movie this year. Bille August is considered the total opposite to Lars Von Trier and Vinterberg with a great international reputation. The filmography of Bille August includes two movies that both were awarded with the Golden Palms in Cannes: “Pelle the Conqueror” (1988) and “The best intentions” (1992). In these movies, including today´s, the director is closer to the cinematic perception of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (Valoukos 2003, page 630), avoiding formalistic searching, but focusing on the mental state of his heroes. When August directed the movie in 2014, he was inspired by the Scandinavian drama of Ibsen and Strindberg, but also by the philosophic/religious meditation of Søren Kierkegaard. “Silent heart” touches upon the very complex and emotional issue of euthanasia. It was awarded at International festivals and was admitted at the European Art House. The movie is about the family gathering of three generations, coming together for the weekend inorder to say their last goodbye to Esther (Ghita Nørby) – mother and grandmother – who is sick from the incurable disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

  • He Dreams of Giants
From the makers of Lost In La Mancha comes A Tale of Obsession… He Dreams of Giants A film by Keith Fulton and Lou Pepe RUNNING TIME: 84 minutes United Kingdom, 2019, DCP, 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround, Aspect Ratio16:9 PRESS CONTACT: Cinetic Media Ryan Werner and Charlie Olsky 1 SYNOPSIS “Why does anyone create? It’s hard. Life is hard. Art is hard. Doing anything worthwhile is hard.” – Terry Gilliam From the team behind Lost in La Mancha and The Hamster Factor, HE DREAMS OF GIANTS is the culmination of a trilogy of documentaries that have followed film director Terry Gilliam over a twenty-five-year period. Charting Gilliam’s final, beleaguered quest to adapt Don Quixote, this documentary is a potent study of creative obsession. For over thirty years, Terry Gilliam has dreamed of creating a screen adaptation of Cervantes’ masterpiece. When he first attempted the production in 2000, Gilliam already had the reputation of being a bit of a Quixote himself: a filmmaker whose stories of visionary dreamers raging against gigantic forces mirrored his own artistic battles with the Hollywood machine. The collapse of that infamous and ill-fated production – as documented in Lost in La Mancha – only further cemented Gilliam’s reputation as an idealist chasing an impossible dream. HE DREAMS OF GIANTS picks up Gilliam’s story seventeen years later as he finally mounts the production once again and struggles to finish it. Facing him are a host of new obstacles: budget constraints, a history of compromise and heightened expectations, all compounded by self-doubt, the toll of aging, and the nagging existential question: What is left for an artist when he completes the quest that has defined a large part of his career? 2 Combining immersive verité footage of Gilliam’s production with intimate interviews and archival footage from the director’s entire career, HE DREAMS OF GIANTS is a revealing character study of a late-career artist, and a meditation on the value of creativity in the face of mortality.

Cambridge University Press 0521380650 - The Films of Ingmar Bergman Jesse Kalin Frontmatter More information The Films of Ingmar Bergman This volume provides a concise overview of the career of one of the modern masters of world cinema. Jesse Kalin defines Bergman’s conception of the human condition as a struggle to find meaning in life as it is played out. For Bergman, meaning is achieved independently of any moral absolute and is the result of a process of self-examination. Six existential themes are explored repeatedly in Bergman’s films: judgment, abandonment, suffering, shame, a visionary picture, and above all, turning toward or away from others. Kalin examines how Bergman develops these themes cinematically, through close analysis of eight films: well-known favorites such as Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, and Fanny and Alexander; and im- portant but lesser-known works, such as Naked Night, Shame, Cries and Whispers, and Scenes from a Marriage. Jesse Kalin is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at Vassar College, where he has taught since 1971. He served as the Associate Editor of the journal Philosophy and Literature, and has con- tributed to journals such as Ethics, American Philosophical Quarterly, and Philosophical Studies. © Cambridge University Press www.cambridge.org Cambridge University Press 0521380650 - The Films of Ingmar Bergman Jesse Kalin Frontmatter More information CAMBRIDGE FILM CLASSICS General Editor: Ray Carney, Boston University The Cambridge Film Classics series provides a forum for revisionist studies of the classic works of the cinematic canon from the perspective of the “new auterism,” which recognizes that films emerge from a complex interaction of bureaucratic, technological, intellectual, cultural, and personal forces.
