  • The Priory of St. Denys
HANTS FIELD CLUB, 1895 PLATE I. GROSE, DELT., 1773. ST. DENY'S PRIORY, WEST FRONT. ,. •: - . 155 THE PRIORY OF ST. DENYS. BY A. H. SKELTON. The Priory of Saint Dionysius or Denys, near Southamp- ton, belonged to the Canons regular of the Order of St. Augustine, and was situated on the western bank of the river Itchen, about two miles north of the walls of Southamp- ton. The Prior and Canons were lords of the manors of Northam and Portswood, both within the liberties although outside the walls of the town. As the Canons were endowed with the chapelries of All Saints, Holy Rood, St. Lawrence, and St. Michael, Southampton, and were responsible for the services therein, they were possibly more immediately associated with the religious life of the town than the rector of St. Mary's, the mother church of Southampton, which then stood, surrounded by fields, amidst the traces of the deserted Saxon town of Hampton, from which the in- habitants had migrated in the eleventh century, and founded a new town around the King's castle, in a more defensible position, on the western shore, abutting on the river Test. The Prior and Convent of St. Denys were also holders of property in Southampton, and owing to this connection, both civil .and religious, the Priory, although comparatively a small foundation, has engaged the attention of topographers and local historians, among whom may ' be mentioned Grose, Warner, Duthy, Woodward, Wilksi and the Rev. J. Silvester Davies, who, in his " History of Southampton," gives many interesting details relating to this house, but for the purposes of this notice it will suffice briefly to summarise these authorities.

  • CCATCH the Solent - Upper West Itchen and St Denys
CCATCH the Solent - Upper West Itchen and St Denys Issue 1, Winter 2012/13 What is the Coastal Communities Adapting to Change Project? We are helping the community on the West bank of the Itchen (between Horseshoe Bridge and Mansbridge) prepare for coastal change, in particular sea level rise. The project is being run by Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council and the Solent Forum with the aid of a European Union grant. The aim is to work with you so that you are aware of and able to manage possible future risks. What contact with the community has happened so far? We first contacted the community in August 2012 and delivered a letter and leaflet to 271 properties identified by Southampton City Council as being at risk of tidal flooding (all properties at risk of flooding in any one in 200 year event). A total of 45 people responded, and subsequently these respondents were invited to a public meeting at the Riverside Club on Priory Avenue on 8th November 2012. This meeting was attended by 29 people. The Project team introduced themselves, Heather Shepherd from the National Flood Forum gave a presentation on the need to develop local resilience, and then the community worked in groups to share information on local flood risk and list the key components that may be needed if the community were interested in developing ‘a community flood plan’. A report on the meeting was produced but in summary the community identified the following actions: Public Meeting - November 2012 - actions requested by the community • Become part of a community group to discuss further action - 16 people.

Buy a ticket before you board You need to buy a valid ticket before you get on your train. We know that most of our passengers do this before travelling, and we have a duty to those passengers to make sure no-one travels without paying. This is why we run a penalty fares scheme across most of our network. If you travel without a valid ticket to or from a station within the penalty fares area, you may have to pay a penalty fare of £20 or twice the single fare to the next station your train stops at (whichever is higher). You will also have to buy a ticket for the rest of your journey. We have a policy to, wherever possible, prosecute everyone who deliberately avoids paying. Travel with Confidence So that you can travel with confidence, we are: ventilating trains to refresh air, improving information about journeys and trains, and extensively cleaning trains and stations. In crowded spaces, wear a face covering out of respect to others. Please be considerate of other passengers and rail staff. Cycles on trains The services in this timetable have limited room for cycles and we have to apply some restrictions.

  • Southampton's Migrant Past
SOUTHAMPTON’S MIGRANT PAST A WALKING TOUR This pamphlet and the walking tour are to introduce you to the rich history of Southampton’s migrant past. Southampton, even from prehistory, has been shaped by migration – both through invasion (Romans, Saxon, Viking and Norman) and by refugees and others who have chosen to come or have been sent here, making it the exciting cosmopolitan city it is today. Much of this migrant past is hidden but can still be found. This is typified by the cover illustration – the wonderful automata Bathers in Southampton Water by Sam Smith. Sam, the son of a steamship captain, grew up in Southampton and used to watch the liners go by, impressed as a lad only by the number and size of their funnels. Later in life after visiting Ellis Island in New York he realised that they were vessels carrying thousands of ordinary migrants. In this work, Sam Smith tells the user of this model that in the bowels of the ship ‘you may espy the Steerage Passengers’. These, he believed, were ‘the real people’. Similarly this walking tour will make ‘the invisible, visible’ so that the migrant contribution can be fully appreciated - not only for those who live here but also to visitors to Southampton. Southampton, past and present, is a place of movement and settlement. This tour is designed to show that its dynamism is built on migration. We hope you enjoy exploring these exciting sites which will concentrate on the historic quarter and the old dock area. A separate tour of the old Cemetery - over a mile to the north - is also provided, revealing again the fascinating and unique histories of migrant Southampton.

  • A Walk from St Denys Station to Chandlers Ford Station
A Walk From St Denys station to Chandlers Ford station Start: St Denys Railway Station Finish: Chandlers Ford Railway Station Distance: 6 miles approx. Time: 2-3 hours A walk between St Denys and Chandlers Ford via River Itchen and the Monks Brook with very little road walking. This walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. There are 4 stiles to cross. Take care when crossing any of the roads. Leave St Denys Station on the eastern side, turn right into Adelaide Road and walk to the end and turn left into Priory Road. Follow this until you reach Cobden Bridge (A3035). Cross the road and turn right to cross the bridge on the left hand side, on reaching the other side take the footpath on the left down the slope into Cobden Meadows. Follow this path all the way through Riverside Park, keeping the river on your left. When you reach a road (Woodmill Lane) cross over and continue along the path with the river on your left and the pitch and putt course on your right. Eventually you will emerge at an old stone bridge just before the Mansbridge Road, turn left, crossing the river on the bridge, almost immediately turn left along a path away from the road and follow this - there is an open space and children's playground on the left. The path becomes a pavement and then a path again as it enters woodland with houses on the right. Just before you reach a bridge over a brook, turn right and follow the path through woodland, keeping in the same northerly direction.
