FOR IMMEDIATE RElEASE \ q A"'"\. "'\ ~ u. S. Senator Bob Dole (R-Kans.) today reported to the Senate the names of TV stations respmlding to his request for air
time to present contrasting views to answer commercials of
the "Amendment to End the War" committee.
Dole gave the names of 36 stations running contrasting
views and said1 '"'bese stations understand the 'Fairness Doctrine' and are presenting to their viewers arguments on
both sides of this particular issue."
The Kansas Senator also commented on those stations
refusing to broadcast views ~pposite those of the paid
commercials1 "A number of other TV stations have refused to present contrasting views, but some have indicated that they
are adhering to the requirements of the., 1 Fairness Doctrine' •
A few responses, unfortunately1 indicate ~nly those with money are entitled to express their views on this powerful
public media. " He then gave the list of those stations refusing to run contrasting views.
Dole concluded1 "Now that the principal sponsors of the so-called 'Amendment to End the War' -- which should be
1 1 designated the Lose the Peace Amendment -- have entirely
rewritten their proposal, I shall again contact the stations
which previously declined. 'lhe amendment is now more
meaningless than ever and it ~curs to me that the sponsors
should return the hundreds of thousands of dollars solicited
from the public based on the (')riginal text of the amendment."
