    Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen.

Just 25 years old and 23 weeks pregnant with her second child Katelyn collapsed at a dog show suffering a life- threatening subarachnoid haemorrhage. Young, strong, healthy and vibrant, Katelyn was brought up in the dog world. Her mother Yanina and Grandmother Fran along with Katelyn breed British Bulldogs under the “Paseya” prefix, also having over a 20 year love interest in their other heart breed the Dalmatian, Katelyn and Yanina started their own kennel and now breed them in partnership under the “Ourdals” prefix. Progressing through the Junior Handlers ranks and representing the State on several occasions, Katelyn is very well known in the show scene, not only for handling her own dogs to many Best in Shows but campaigning others as well. Not one to say “NO”, she goes out of her way to help others whether it be handling, holding, or even saving that illustrious “Top Knot!” Katelyn ‘s involvement in Juniors has led her to be on the Junior Handlers Committee which she has served on for several years, she is also Secretary of an All Breeds Club and a committee member of her Breed club in Tasmania. Understandably, this medical condition has had a devastating impact on Katelyn’s life and her nearest and dearest, she was in ICU in a coma for nearly 3 weeks before being transferred to a ward where she has started a rehabilitation program. Katelyn’s condition has affected her movement and co-ordination (significantly more on her left side) and she is working hard on her motor development, in both gross and fine motor skills.

    ABSTRACT Nobella Indradjaja A Thesis A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Banters In Crime Drama Series NCIS: Los Angeles That Indicates Female Stereotyping This research analyzes the conversations in television crime drama series NCIS: Los Angeles. It will focus on the banters among the characters of NCIS: Los Angeles namely Marty Deeks, G Callen, Sam Hanna and Kensi Blye. Banters are witty, harmless, fun and pleasant wordplay. To find banters used in crime drama series are interesting. The conversations between the characters in crime drama series are usually serious, harsh and scientifically related to the criminal case. The aim of the research is to seek the type of banters between the characters and the stereotyping conveyed through the banters in a crime drama series. In conducting this qualitative research, I use critical discourse analysis perspective. The data collection is attained from the first season until the fifth season of television crime drama series NCIS: Los Angeles. The data analysis is based on the transcription or drama scripts obtained from reliable NCIS: Los Angeles fan based website. Then, a content analysis is conducted on the written transcript of utterances used from the series to observe the categories of meanings suggested by the banters. The obtained data are then analyzed by Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis perspective, which discusses the relation between discourse, cognition and society. The discourse would be the banters and the cognition would be the intention categories and the society would be the social context produced through the banters. The expected outcome would indicate that there is a gender stereotyping conveyed through the banters in crime drama series.

Prime time television shows genre is mostly drama, whether it is a romance, action, thriller or crime and police procedural sub genres. In Indonesia, the last two genres mentioned are commonly broadcast through paid television broadcast because the shows are mostly produced by American production houses and aired on American television network. In television program, genre is recognized as sets of how certain show or program is classified and identified as belonging to a certain genre. Crime drama genre is a sub genre of drama genre and it is sometimes combined with the police procedural genre with a little romance twist. Other genres mixing in crime drama are cops and robbers; the gangsters; the western; the private eye; the classic whodunit; the heist; and the noir (Taylor & Willis, 1999, p. 57). This kind of genre mixing is common in television drama series. It will be dull and bland series if the writer and producer do not add sub genres to the basic genre. The difference between television shows and film are the missing epic landscapes as it is in films, does not have the narrative closure and it would end in a resolution of each episode plot (Taylor & Willis, 1999, p. 63). Watching crime drama can give answer for some of the viewers about their curiosity on crimes and for the others, it is likely to give another reason of how violent and scary the world is (Sparks, 1992, p.
