Improving the Coverage and Technical Brief Quality of Village Health and Nutrition Days October 2012 Background Box 1: Services to be provided during VHND Village Health and Nutrition Days (VHNDs) are a major initiative Ÿ Register all pregnant women under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to improve Ÿ ANC check-ups for the pregnant women registered access to maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition Ÿ Identify pregnant women left out from services and (MNCHN) services at the village level. Across the country, provide them services VHNDs are intended to occur in every village once a month Ÿ Identify and refer cases of severe anaemia and usually at the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) or other suitable pregnant women with obstetric emergencies location. AWCs are a central feature of the Ministry of Women Ÿ Full immunisation for children under one year and Child Development’s flagship Integrated Child Development Ÿ Identify children left out and provide immunisation Services (ICDS) programme. VHNDs provide a basket of health services and nutrition services and counselling to the community on a Ÿ Distribute Vitamin A solution to children pre-designated day, time and place. VHNDs require convergent Ÿ Weigh all children and monitor weight on growth chart actions from the Department of Health and Family Welfare Ÿ Distribute supplementary nutrition to underweight (DHFW) and the Department of Women and Child Development children (DWCD) at state, district and block levels to plan, implement Ÿ Refer children with severe acute malnutrition (Grades 3 and monitor the programme. 10- Mitigating Water Quality Problems in Bundelkhand - INREM FOUNDATION (i) About INREM Foundation INREM Foundation is a research institution probing societal issues concerning water, public health, agriculture and the environment. The institution develops innovative inter- disciplinary solutions and brings them into the wider domain of practice by participating with communities and government. The goal towards a Fluorosis free India guides INREM's work for the past 10 years from its initial work in Jhabua and now to the rest of the country. In this journey, the organization started small from a community based programme in Jhabua (MP), developed a national network on the issue, known as the Fluoride Knowledge and Action Network (FKAN), and now scaling up through District level people centric platforms, and Technology aided platforms, across the country, on the Fluoride issue. Currently, INREM has presence in 9 fluoride affected districts of 5 states: Rajasthan, MP, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha and Assam, with a state level partnership in Assam and Rajasthan with the state Water and Sanitation Support Organization (WSSO). It is now supported by the European Union (EU), Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives (APPI) Arghyam and UNICEF. These initiatives are now leading INREM closer to its goal of a Fluorosis free India. INREM was constituted in 1994 with support from Winrock International, Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation. It originally started with a need felt by natural resource economists to impact teaching, training and research in their field in India. Team-INREM together, they bring forward a combination of research skills, social work experience and innovative product development approaches. INREM projects are solution-oriented. -

Timely supply of planting material need to be ensured to the farmers because delayed planting of banana adversely affects the productivity as younger plants are more susceptible to frost. The infrastructure facilities like laboratories, equipments, net houses, poly houses etc created with the support of NHM at Banaras Hindu University and Horticulture Department of the State Government should be used for the benefit of the farmers also. Field visits and interaction of JIT with farmers revealed that farmers have not been advised properly by grass root level technical staffs accountable for execution of NHM. Rather than area expansion, emphasis should be given on rejuvenation of senile orchards, post harvest management, mechanization, establishment of processing units and plant nurseries. There is an immediate need to intensify the guava canopy management programme in Banaras and Allahabad districts. The benefits have been repeated either to the same farmers or to the members of same family. -

Accepted 3 April, 2012 In the present study the authors have attempted to analyse the condition of food security in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh at district level. Bundelkhand region has been chosen as a unit of study because it is one of the poorest regions in comparison with western, central and eastern regions of the state and even after being in close proximity to heartland of green revolution (Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh) the region is still backward in agricultural development in India in general. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy and mostly dependent on monsoonal rainfall. The Bundelkhand is continuously facing drought since last few years and people are migrating for employment. Thus, there is an urgent need to look after the conditions of food security of the people living in this region. The standard statistical techniques have been used for the analysis of data. The study concludes that the condition of food security is unfavourable. Only one district of Jalaun has shown high food security. Majority of the districts are moderate and low food secure because of low food grain availability, low purchasing power of the people, etc. -

MINUTES OF THE 22nd MEETING OF THE STEERING COMMITTEE ON INTEGRATED WATERSHED MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME HELD ON 03.11.2011 AT NIRMAN BHAVAN, DEPARTMENT OF LAND RESOURCES, NEW DELHI The 22nd meeting of the Steering Committee on Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) was held on 03.11.2011 under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary (LR) in the Committee Room of Department of Land Resources at NBO Building, Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi. The list of participants is at Annexure-I. 2. The Joint Secretary (WM) welcomed the participants and requested the State representatives from Assam, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Sikkim to present the proposals to the Committee for appraisal. She said that the Operational Guidelines for “Livelihoods for landless/assets less and Production system and Micro- enterprises” have been issued by the Department and these are available on the Departmental website (www.dolr.nic.in). 3. She expressed concern over slow progress in implementation of projects under IWMP and said that because of this reason huge unspent balance is lying with the States. She said that the Department is working on guidelines for social audit and evaluation of IWMP projects in consultation with the National Rainfed Areas Authority (NRAA). She reminded the States that the cut off date for completion of pre-IWMP projects under IWDP/DPAP/DDP is fast approaching and advised the representatives of the States present to submit claims for next installment under these projects. These projects are to be completed by 31.12.2012. 4. ASSAM i. The Commissioner, Soil and Water Conservation Department-cum-Chairman, SLNA, Assam made a presentation on the progress of on-going watershed projects of DoLR in the State of Assam.
