It is a medium-sized deciduous tree and very vigorous in growth. According to traditional system, it possesses anthelmintic, purgative, diuretic, expectorant, antipyretic, hepatoprotective and analgesic action. The fruits are edible and used as pickle. The gum obtained from mucilage is used for pasting sheets of paper and as matrix forming material in tablet formulations. Phytochemical investigations show the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins and reducing sugar. Evaluation of pharmacological activities confirmedC. obliqua plant as antimicrobial, hypotensive, respiratory stimulant, diuretic and anti‑inflammatory drug. A number of traditional activities of this plant still need scientific approval which will increase its medicinal potential. This review presents the Pharmacognostic properties, phytochemical constituents, traditional uses and biological activities reported for the plant and it will be helpful to explore the knowledge about Cordia obliqua Willd. for the researchers. Cordia sinensis Lam. Boraginaceae LOCAL NAMES English (grey-leaved saucer berry,grey-leaved cordia); Somali (marer,mareer); Swahili (mnya mate,mkamasi) BOTANIC DESCRIPTION Cordia sinensis is a low leafy shrub or bush, multi-stemmed tree 3-12 m high and often with slender branches tending to droop. The bark is brown to pale creamy-brown, finely fissured longitudinally, or smooth, dark grey on branches. Flowers and leaves (Bart Wursten) Leaves opposite, (sub)opposite or alternate, ovate to obovate or broadly, 2-12 x 1-4.5 cm, glabrous or slightly pubescent and often somewhat sandpapery; petiole about 10 mm longwith long pale hairs. Flowers white or cream, in terminal cymes 6-7 cm long, rather urn-shaped, corolla 8-9 cm long and calyx lobes are covered with yellowish-brown short soft hairs, browning when over. Fruits conical, bright red or orange when ripe, 7-20 mm long, with conspicuous long tip and hang in conspicuous clusters. Fruits and leaves (Bart Wursten) Seed 1-4, hard, rough, yellowish cream. The generic name honours a 16th century German botanist, Valerius Cordus. The specific epithet 'sinensis' refers to its Chinese origin. BIOLOGY Flowering occurs in December to February and August while fruiting in April to June and December. Fruit are eaten by monkeys, baboons and birds which are the main dispersal agents. WEISLER2, JON G. HATHER3 AND DYLAN MORROW4 ABSTRACT Henderson island, a World Heritage Site in the Pitcairn group, south-central Pacific Ocean, has often been thought to have a pristine vegetation. Our archaeological investigations and field observations in 1991-1992, supported by recent observations in 1997, suggest the occurrence of former areas of Polynesian cultivation near to the North and East Beaches, and indicate that about 17 non-native vascular plant taxa have occurred. The majority of these were deliberate Polynesian introductions, some taxa are known only as sub-fossils from Polynesian occupation sites; some of this sub-fossil material may represent imported plant parts such as timber or food wraps, rather than indicating in situ cultivation. These Polynesian introductions show little spread from their probable site of introduction and are mostly restricted to the vicinity of the northern beaches; some have become extinct on Henderson. The Pitcaim islanders have also introduced a small number of vascular plants, and one of these (Passijora maliformis) is potentially invasive. Other taxa have been accidentally introduced, at least one by a recent scientific expedition in 1991. The intact nature of much of the native vegetation may have restricted the opportunities for more widespread colonization; care is needed to ensure that this situation persists.
