Barber B.A., History, University of New Mexico, 2006 B.A., Religious Studies, University of New Mexico, 2006 M.A., History, University of New Mexico, 2009 ABSTRACT The present study elucidates the discursive practice of positivism, as particularly manifested in late nineteenth-century Brazil. Founded in 1889, the Republic of the United States of Brazil was constructed as a positivist state by republican idealists and pragmatic oligarchs; the political embodiment of ordem e progresso (order and progress). It was a form of government meant to overcome Brazil‘s imagined and concrete backwardness by strictly adhering to the Natural Laws identified by Auguste Comte, Charles Darwin, and, in particular, Herbert Spencer. Positivist progress was, however, contingent upon the elimination of the pathological, amorphous ―savage lower races.‖ Non-white degeneration in Brazil, especially amongst its substantial mixed-race populace, was thus understood to be a progressive, equilibrating force of Evolution. For close to a century Euclides da Cunha‘s Os Sertões has been treated as the literary instantiation of mestiço degeneration, a work best classified with the Spencerian ―race science‖ of Arthur Gobineau and Raimundo Nina Rodrigues. This classification, however, is incorrect. (Gregório de Matos) 0-0) O poema em análise é característico da estética barroca, pois, do ponto de vista estilístico, joga com os opostos, fazendo uso frequente da antítese. 1-1) Na primeira estrofe, o poeta considera que, se seu interlocutor soubesse falar, satirizar ou poetar, assim como sabe o poeta, não calaria seu poder de crítica. 2-2) No poema é invocada a Musa praguejadora, como alusão à Musa inspiradora, levando, assim, o leitor a inferir que o poeta fará uma crítica maldizente. 3-3) Ao final do poema, o eu poético declara amar a liberdade, dando a entender que se sente bem em falar de sua poesia, visto que é livre e ama a liberdade. 4-4) ‘Boca do Inferno’ é o apelido que Gregório de Matos recebeu por dedicar parte de sua produção poética à crítica, muitas vezes satírica, à corrupção e à hipocrisia da sociedade baiana.

A government and a society that had its eyes on Europe, questioning the barbaric way of acting against the alleged barbarism in the name of civilization, first appeared in Brazil at the book of Euclides da Cunha. There are more than condemnation of a massacre and the revelation of the Brazilian interior's misery: the powerful strength of this book is revealed in a new interpretation of Brazil, able to put the concept of nation in another political perspective. Therefore, this work aims to show how the finished work and the ultimate political and intellectual activity of Euclides da Cunha's book “Os Sertões”. Monk Jr. Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology University of California, Berkeley Professor Loïc Wacquant, Chair This dissertation comprises the first two parts of the first comparative, mixed-methods study of the social and economic significance of skin tone and hair type as markers of ethnoracial division among black Americans in the U.S. and the Brazilian population as a whole. Using an extended concept of “bodily capital” to capture salient and consequential phenotypical properties, it combines a quantitative analysis of several nationally representative data sets in the U.S. and Brazil with 100 in-depth interviews (50 in each country) to show that: (1) skin tone is as powerful a basis of intraracial classification and stratification among African Americans as it is within the Brazilian population at-large and (2) skin tone and hair type are both powerful markers of social experience and widely perceived to determine differential treatment in intimate, commercial and public spheres alike. These findings are mined to contribute to current debates on the foundations and lived reality of ethnoracial inequality in the two Americas, colorism in global perspective, and theories of group formation.

    Spectacle and Rebellion in Fin de Siècle Brazil: The Commodified Rebel in Machado de Assis’s Chronicles CAROLINA SÁ CARVALHO University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Abstract: In the present article, I examine Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis’s five chronicles, published between 1894-1897 in the Rio de Janeiro newspaper A Gazeta de Notícias, on the Brazilian Republic’s assault against the Canudos community in Northeasten Brazil. Focusing on Machado’s critique of the role of communication technologies, and particularly print news, in fin de siècle Brazil, I argue that he makes use of the transformation of the messianic community into a national mediatic event to thematize the birth of a consumer society, the violent expansion of global capitalist networks and state power, authoritarianism, and the contradictory values of what he refers to as “bourgeois industrial society.” Keywords: Media studies, commodification, Canudos, imagined communities, sertão In his last chronicle published in the Rio de Janeiro periodical A Gazeta de Notícias, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis comments on the public fuss over the community of Canudos and its leader, the prophet Antônio Conselheiro (A Semana, 14 Feb. 1897). Rumors of the emergence of an anti-republican community guided by a “fanatic” leader in the backlands of Bahia had sporadically appeared in national news since Conselheiro and his followers settled in the region in 1893 (after almost two decades of pilgrimage in the semi- 89 Sá Carvalho arid backlands of the northeast region of Brazil). At the banks of the Vaza-Barris river, the pilgrims founded a large and fully functional community that attracted thousands of people.1 The settlement, called Belo Monte by its inhabitants and known as Canudos in the coastal urban centers, posed a problem for the local labor economy, and so it attracted the attention of civil authorities and journalists in Bahia.
